View Full Version : Goodyear F1 Supercar Tires Defective? WTF?

Below you will see pics of the front driver side, 20" Goodyear F1 Supercar tire, that came stock on my 300C SRT8. The car has slightly over 11,000 miles. Only this tire has wear down to the cords.
I brought it to a dealer for a possible alignment problem even though only one tire was affected and only the outer rim of the tread. They said they made an adjustment from .03 to .01 but that is not enough to cause this and they can't figure out how it happenned.
I then brought the my car to a GoodYear dealer. The manager said the car must of been way out of alignment to cause this.
1) Has anyone seen this with these tires?
2) How much life is left in this tire? The Goodyear guy said it needed to be replaced immediately but of course he wants to make a sale.
3) I wanted to replace the F1's with toyo proxes when these wore out but now do I replace this one tire with another GoodYear F1 until the rest finally wear down or do I start replacing one tire at a time?
Help from anyone who has experienced something similiar would be appreciated.
PS Only this tire (Front driver) was affected and only the outer rim. The rest of this tire has plenty of tread.

If it was WAY OUT of alignment would you not of noticed?
Alignment. I'm gonna be on my fourth set here very soon. I have no complaints about the F1's and no issues either. BTW, I run with -1.5 degree of camber and my thread wear is perfect even with all the highway driving I do.
With how mine wear and my camber adjusment. I would tend to believe that perfect or close to "0" degree camber would wear the outer edge off just like what has happened to yours.
And BTW before anyone asks me why my rides like that.......................I dun't gaknow.

Tim with All Time Racing recommended a slightly negative camber for those of us who go on road courses or do a lot of "spirited" driving. It seems to spread the wear more evenly on the front tires. Why, I dunno either. Just what I heard. And no I haven't had issues with that kinda damage on my F1s, just that they start getting slick around 11,500 miles.

Yes and I didn't. I thought for sure I would be wearing out the rear tires first!

that's not a defect. that's wear. i would change that tire today. the last thing you need is a blowout.

Could be that your shop's alignment rack is out of calibration too. My friend works at a dealership and he told me NOT to get my car aligned there because he doesn't trust their rack as its set up right now.

that sucks! is it true that the dealer doesnt carry these tires anymore? my coworker has a srt magnum and he went in to get a new tire but ended up getting toyo's. he tells me that they no longer carry them

My front passenger side was worn to the cords only on the inside, about 2" in width. I think it has to do with the stock camber.

My front tire is wearing the same way. I've had the dealer look at my alignment on 2 seperate visits. I could tell something was out of wack when the steering wheel would start to shake about 80mph. My other tires are wearing just fine.

Did they come up with a solution?

so you would recommend for me to use your specs to stop this wear on my car as well??
can you post up your exact specs for everything??

As I recall, Eibach offers a camber correction kit for LX's (presumably to allow for correction after installing shorter springs); it might provide greater adjustability.

I'd say it has nothing to do with the tire itself, looks like alignment. HArd to tell but it may be accompanied by some cupping, if that is the case, I'd check the shocks out as well.

I have 10,550 on mine and they are wearing out evenly. Am I the lucky one or what. I too have the F1's... I will post pics later to show. Sorry to hear that for those of you having this problem...

Why would you wait so long before addressing the issue?
Do you rotae your wheels?
We've had many with tie rod issues, have they been checked?

I have been addressing this issue since 1900 miles... i now have 13k and i cant get the dealership to do anything... i had Belle Tire do a 4 wheel alignment and it was WAY OFF from the factory... my driverside had a +.8 camber and teh passenger had +.1 camber. i also have a bunch of cupping, the steering feels sloppy, and i have a bad vibration at 80mph....
oh, did I mention that my dealership can't do an alignment on my car due to the 20" SRT wheels??:wtf:

i would have them check the tie rods again . as you know many of us have had issues
mine felt fine but i had clunk but the issue i had was the same outer edge wear on the drivers side (one replaced )
so with + camber and slight left/right movement will scuff it over time

Thanks guys! i had a new tire put on today but I'll have the tie rod checked.
CRHemi - These are stagerred so I don't rotate them. I only have had this 300 for 5 months, the issue just kind of snuck up on me. I didn't know how bad it was until I could see the cords, remember that the rest of the tire has plenty of tread.

This is my story almost exactly.
Belle Tire also told me that two of my stock SRT wheels were bent. They of course offered to sell me new wheels and tires.
I then went to the dealer and they checked the wheels and said that they were not bent and that my vibration problem was from the tires being worn unevenly. They of course offered to sell me new tires.
After two alignments and three balancings, I have given up on the f1's. My only fear is that by just running them until they are shot that the vibration will damage the tie rods or the rack.
I am going with the Nitto's when the time comes.
Has anybody mounted Nitto 255's all the way around?

The reason for negative camber is so the tread will be flatter against the road in the curves. When the tire is up the geometry tends to cause positive camber. With a little negative camber, it evens out some in the corners and gives better traction in the corners.
If you ever notice the Nascar cars, they have lots of negative camber on the short tracks.

1 have the 255's all the way around and 1fst4dr has seen my car many times and it looks great. theres is no problems what so ever with any type of rubbing even at full lock and backing. just do it. the look of the front fender gap will close up and you can rotate them tham

have you had the alignment checked yet???? heres another problem with the f1's they are soft and they lose air pressure fast. every 500 miles or so you will see that they will lose at least a pound of air and after a couple of thousand miles they will be 2-5 pounds off each and thats alot on a 245 profile soft compound tire. falkens and nittos are a harder compound tire and wear alot better and you will see around 20 to 25 thound miles out of those tires-or around 18 to 20 if you to care for them and drive like a nut.

Why is it that they are worn badly on the outside edge for 1/3 the circumferance of the tire and not for the rest?? WTF?

I noticed my F1 fronts are wearing a lot more on the outer edge than the inner

I have to go to the dealer for the infamous oring "leaking tranny fluid" problem on Thursday so I'll have them check out this TSB while I am there:
