hey guys. I'm getting prepared to install the factory Navigation unit in my RT (when it comes in) and need to know where the gps antenna goes. I have heard "on top of the AC vent..." Can anyone provide some more detailed information?

Much appreciated!

It sits under the AC vent....you have to pull the dash open to mount it.

Can anyone elaborate on this? Top or bottom? Is there already some screw holes or something where it went if it came stock?

This is out of the service manual, if it helps:

It's easy to get to.
1. remove bolt on knee bolster.
2. Pull knee bolster to access the 3 screws that hold the gage package trim bezel.
3. Use trim tool to loosen the gage trim bezel.
4. 4 screws hold the gage packackage, pull it out rotate it 90 degrees, no need to disconnect the cables.

That will give you full access to the recessed area in front of the gages. As shown in the service manual that LtlDad showed above.

So this is literally under the speedometer etc. Not above the ac vent like I have read elsewhere? Or are they refering to the same spot? What is a trim tool and is it absolutely necessary? Thanks for your help and quick responses.

Tomatoe...tomatoe (LOL), I think it is the same place.

A 'trim tool' is basically anything thin and ridged. A butter knife, screwdriver, putty knife or popsicle stick will work.

Anyone try relocating the antenna for a better signal?

I mounted my gps antenna under the forward dash trim just behind the light sensor. slightly larger than a matchbook fit just fine

The Nav unit was an easy installation. I put the GPS antenna to the right of the console bezel and as far toward the windshield as I could reach (without dismantling anything other than removing the old radio). The antenna is not very far forward and not horizontal to the ground, but still gets 6 Satellites the last time I checked. The Satellite signal must be robust enough and Satellite numbers are so redundant that exact placement is not that important.
