Install Factory Policecar HD Oil Cooler
Time:
3 hours
Skill Level:
Medium - Hard
Tools Required:
-10MM
-7MM
-Vise Grips
-Wrench
-Pliers
-Dremel with cutoff wheel (optional)
-Serpentine belt tensioner bar (to remove the belt)
-Oil filter wrench
-Bucket
Additional required items:
-Oil filter and oil (if doing oil change)
-Antifreeze
-Thread-locker
-Radiator hose clamp (optional)
This weekend along with the Phenolic Spacers, I installed the Police HD Oil Cooler. Since there are no instructions, I thought I would try and throw something together to help everyone out.
In addition to the kit, you will need some antifreeze and now is a good time to change the oil, which I did, so a new filter and oil also.
The kit:
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2114.jpg
Oil filter mount, new thermostat housing, hose from thermostat housing to oil filter mount, new lower radiator hose.
Step 1: First thing is to get the car up and remove all the plastic covers from the bottom.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2097.jpg
Step 2: Next drain the radiator using the drain cock on the passenger side.
Step 3: remove the filter and/or drain the oil if you are going to do an oil change at the same time.
Step 4: remove the filter pipe nipple that is in the block. Vise grips can be a man's best friend but they aren't very nice to parts.
Pipe nipple out:
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2118.jpg
Step 5: Install the new oil filter mount. I recommend using some thread locker on the end which goes into the block:
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2123.jpg
Step 6: Next remove the stock thermostat housing. I would not recommend installing the new one yet, it will help having this out of the way when trying to remove the stock lower hose.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2117.jpg
Step 7: I also removed the drive belt to get to the lower hose and had to cut off the stock clamps since I was unable to get either of them off.
Step 8: Install the new lower hose. I found the clamp that was on the hose with the kit to be too small. I chose to cut it off and use a regular worm gear clamp. It seems the end of the new lower radiator hose is smaller than the stock one and with the clamp on it, it's nearly impossible to get it to fit the radiator. Maybe someone else has had a different experience.
Step 9: Once the new lower hose is in, reintall the drive belt.
Step 10: Now you can install the new thermostat housing. Now is a good time to install your new lower temp thermostat as well. I put in the 176 degree thermostat from Autozone (part #4127)
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2119.jpg
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2122.jpg
Step 11: Add the new bypass hose to the bottom of the new thermostat housing. Notice when installed, the clearance is tight. I used a tie wrap as added protection.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2129.jpg
Step 12: With both hoses now at the new oil filter mount, connect the hoses.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2128.jpg
Based on the orientation of the 2 hoses, it's almost impossible to mix up which one goes where.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2127.jpg
Step 13: Install new oil filter, oil and coolant and put all the plastic back in. You will need to check the coolant level over the next couple of days to make sure it is back to the right level. Or, you can let the car warm up to operating temperature and then let cool down a couple of times. You need to get the thermostat to open so the coolant will run through the system before you can be sure about your coolant level.

I got a PM from formerice, a memeber here and he told me this....
when you do the police oil cooler, you pull off the oil filter and pull out the nipple that the filter screws onto and replace it with a longer one that comes with the kit, the cooler itself bolts on and the new longer nipple is there to screw the filter back on. Then you replace a couple water hoses and plumb to the oil cooler, refill antifreeze, and your done. The nipple is a [bugger] to remove. You will need the right size extractor, a good one not a Chinese pos or it will break off inside the nipple. After looking at the replacement nipple, it has blue loctite on it, so I decided to carefully heat it with a torch untill cherry red, bingo it unscrewed easily. If you do a search for police oil cooler, there is a breakdown of parts that you can get from a Mopar dealer. Beauty of this cooler is that it uses 180 degree antifreeze to cool the oil. Antifreese is way more efficient than air, next it allows heat from the oil to quickley heat up the antifreeze in the winter reducing friction.
I have the parts sitting in my garage waiting for me to get home in about 15 days from now to install.

Yes, I had a bitch of a time with the nipple until firing up the torch, bingo, that was the answer. I broke a cheap extractor off inside the nipple, before the torch and vicegrips. Good writeup.

Just did mine, and what a "bugger", I don't think there is enough bad words in the dictionary to describe all the ones I said. I know I have made up a few of my own along the way.
I even called a life line, it ended up being morale support, but it sure made me feel better!

Another option for that nipple, for those who dont have a torch, is perhaps to get two nuts that fit, run one up a way, then the other. Back the first one back down so it jams up against the bottom one. This should let you get a big enough wrench on there.

"Jamming" nuts is a great trick, but if I'm not mistaken the oil filter nipple is pipe thread. I'm not aware of pipe thread nuts.

I used a pipe easy out set, I had to use 3 seperate sizes and a hack saw once the end of the nipple split on me.
Even with that and that HUGE cheater bar, every time it turned it creeked like loosing a lug nut on a 65 Chevy that has been sitting in a junk yard that flooded every year since 66.

Correct, jamming nuts would not work. There is nothing to grab onto in or on the top/bottom of the nipple.

I didn't need any nuts to install the pipe nipple. I did use Loctite however to make sure the nipple did not come out. I've had it in for a couple of oil changes since then without any issues.

I attempted the install utilizing the heat/vicegrips method with no luck.
I stopped before I damaged the threads on pipe nipple too severely to be able to screw an oil filter back on.
Took it to a trusted mechanic today, explained all that has been discussed on this thread - it still took him almost an hour to get it out. He said it fought him every inch of the way. Don't know what kind of thread sealant was used, but it must have been good stuff!
Now I have to install the hoses - but the most difficult part is done.
BTW - Wife's 3.5L Pacifica has the cooler as standard equipment.

I'm thinking about driving the car till hot:
Pull the filter while the block is still hot,
Pipe extractor with 9' extension.
CRC freeze off on the interior of the nipple, and 2 sets of vice grips.
Apparently, nobody has had any luck on a nut size to fit.

Anyone who has been up close to there:
Does the outlet of the rad. have a twist lock connection with a grey 40 MM ring, mounted to a nipple? Or is it just a outlet nipple like the rad inlet.
I got a Saudi radiator, which has the system described, and no hose clamp will work with it. It needs a special connection on the reurn line. My supplier is stumped. because he's only shipped 2 of the Max duty rads out.
goldsmi
11-09-2007, 09:22 AM
Mine was just your ordinary nipple, pushed the hose on and released the clamp retainer. Fitting was black, molded as part of the radiator and had no twist-lock device.

At 70 MPH/ 123 F/ level road:
Both fans were on high, JW temp over 130, and Oil temp hitting 138 F.
Glad it was synthetic.
The car could do no more to cool itself, and I had to slow down, or turn the heater on and open the windows.
Your call. I'm going with an oil cooler and bigger radiator.
For those that have read the thread about the Maximum radiator - hold on. We're having a difficulty matching it to a RT. It basically will not bolt in and work as supplied.
I'll update when we get it figured out.

I'd like to thank RJ for this "how to" thread! I found it very helpful when completing mine today.
There are a couple of items that need to be added to it.
If you are installing this on an SRT-8.....don't even bother with the other half of the lower hose that comes on the system. It's meant for a 5.7 and the 6.1 has a larger Rad. You'll just be restricting flow if anything. It's too small to fit into the neck of the lower rad end. Instead, cut off a piece of your stock 6.1 lower rad hose and put a couple of new clamps. Fits like a charm in the spliced end and at the lower rad inlet.
Another way to get out the fitting in the stock oil mount is to use a small pipe wrench with a deep socket on the handle. That worked very well for me, albeit a bit slow....but I managed to get it off without issue.
If you have a dremel tool, use the flex shaft attachment with a cutting wheel to cut the stock upper rad hose clamp and the lower rad hose clamp. They are brutal to get off as it is.
Other than that....it was a difficult install but works like a charm!

Hey Folks!
GREAT Write Up! I see one thing missing here that has not been mentioned - might be considered obvious but needs to be said:
The coolant hose which goes Cooler to T-stat housing, has a zip tie with a Xmas Tree fastener on it. This tree is plugged into an existing hole on your right side fan motor back to keep this hose from ever rubbing on the serp belt!
Trojan - I noted this hose was Very close to the belt on your car at SF08 with no xmas tree and forgot to mention it to you!
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s59/rjkusse/300%20SRT8%20Oil%20Cooler/IMG_2114.jpg
You can see the Xmas Tree fastener on the left hose zip-tied on in this picture.
If I have overstated the obvious, I would rather make sure this is clarified than have even One Person rub a hole in the hose and make the biggest mess of their car (and maybe motor) ever!

Many appropriate epithets to be uttered while attempting to remove the existing nipple.
Coolant - to replace what you spill.
A hose clamp tool like http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947390000P?keyword=hose+clamp&vName=Automotive&cName=Tools+%26+Equipment&sName=Automotive+Specialty+Tools
Seriously, take a look at the previous pages of this thread. If you don't have the appropriate tools at hand, you may want to consider having someone remove that nipple for you. Other than that, no big deal. I think the catch can will be in the way of you changing the T'stat housing and installing the new hoses - you probably want to remove it temporarily.

Finally installed the oil cooler. Let me tell you, You guys weren't joking about getting out the existing oil nipple. What a PITA. At first I tried to use a set of vise grips but ended up stripping the threads and could not get it off. I had a mini torch to heat it up. It was not hot enough.
Unfortunately, my wife was out with my girls at ballet rehearsal. I did not have wheels to get to Home Depot. There was a 3 hour delay by the time she got back. I zipped over to Home Depot and bought a plumbers torch. I went over to AutoZone and bought a set of bolt head extractors.
These bolt head extractors are awesome! I had to use the biggest one they had. It was 11/16 in. These extractors come in a socket config.
I got back and heated up the nipple until cherry red. I put on the extractor on my 1/2 in air impact gun with 450lb-ft. Whoa Nellie!!!! Came right off.
Taking every thing off and on was straight forward. It would have been a straight 4 hour job if I have the right tools in front of me. Turned out to be 8 hours with the delay and dinner(and a beer in between :beerchug:)
Well. That was me Saturday adventure.
Oh yeah. While I was at it, I put in a 180 T-stat and a SRT(Severe Duty II) radiator.

I just finished up this evening. It took me alittle longer for mine. I kind of wanted to add some "bling" to it, so I purchased some S.S. braid from Summit and a few chrome clamps. I had to take all the hoses off from the connections. I also purchased a BT thermostat housing to go with it. One thing that I did notice is that the water outlet that I also purchased from Summit is a little bit longer then the one that comes with the kit and the hose wont fit it. I had to grind off the nipple so the hose would fit it.
The dreaded threaded fitting that everyone has trouble with, came right out for me. Looked to me as if there wasnt any thread lock on it at all. I tried the "jam two nuts together trick" and there really isnt enough room to get them to jam together. I did use an easy out and it came right out.
Heres a few pics for your viewing enjoyment....

Lower hose junction.... Didnt bother putting any chrome hose clamps here. No one is going to see it anyways.

BT themostat housing. Notice how much longer that outlet is compared to the original one. Just used a wire tire to get it away from the belt.

I also got rid of all the spring clamps and went with the tried and true worm gear clamps. Rather an easy mod, just time consuming.

Anyone else mention having to use a larger than normal oil filter when installing this too? The Nipple in my Police Oil Cooler is larger than my stock srt8 nipple so we had to find a different oil filter to fit...

I see you have an '06
If you just bought the oil cooler they've likely modified it for use with the current metric oil filter size boss that is being used.
Don't know any good filter p/n's for the metric filter off hand. If you can't find it here and no one tells you just ask for a 2008 or 2009 oil filter for your car at the autoparts store.
I wonder if we are still able to get the old filter nipple size on these... otherwise I might have to pass on this mod. I like my selection of oversized filters that I have the P/N's memorized and all are readily available.

Ahhh, I didn't even think about that! I purchased it about a month ago from MPSC. We found a larger filter in the shop that was for a old Mercury Cougar to use temporarily but I wanted to get the correct filter on there. I wrote down the filter info though so I could cross-reference it if needed.

Thanks for the write up--:not_worth
I may have to take a different route though- running the procharger stage 2 I have another serpentine belt in front of the stock one- not sure a hose would be able to run down- at least not the one that comes with it... anyone tried it with a stage 2 yet?:beerchug:

Ok so just wanted to thank everyone who has posted in this thread for helping me out. So I went on and did this mod yesterday and I learned a few things. First this was a tad more complicated than I was expecting. Mabey it was becuase I have an SRT and the damn lower rad hose was no were near the right size. (Ended up cutting the stock one to fit) Or mabey it was those damn spring clips that kept slipping out of the pliers. Who know? Whatever it was its done now and this thread was a life saver while I was doing it.
I do want to add one thing to this one though. On the nipple coming out of the block everyone has said that it was a real PITA but I thought of something that made it the easyist part. I had a set of Craftsman rounded nut removers. They have reverse sprial flutes that dig into the nut and twist it out as you turn it with a wrench. Well I put the largest one I had on the nipple and got a 27mm socket and a breaker bar to turn it with. Worked like a charm. Came out like I had slabed butter on it. I hope this helps the next person who does this mod. Saved me a lot a time and headaces. :modding:
