Mickey Thompson ET Street...275/40/17 totally kicks ass...aprox 12in wide footprint. I mounted them on some cheap cragar steelies.
I went from having to smoke the hell out of my BFG 245/40/18 DR's and pedal them out of the hole..... to just cleaning off the ET Streets with a couple dry hops and then being able to nail the throttle out of the hole.
My last 10 60's have been between 1.75 - 1.79
Be warned, you will need 6200 shift points with these tires to ensure you stay in 3rd gear.

It has been confirmed the SRTs can run the 17" rim on the rear hasn't it...a Cragar if I remember....
Can anyone confirm...

Any links to the rims you use? I worry about the R/T brake clearance but obviously a few have 17's running without issues.

I have the M&H Tires.
Only needed 1 smokey burnout to keep traction (clean the rubber off on there that had stickum and such).
They grab so much that if I am not in the water box, I WILL NOT spin the tires on a brakestand... I will just push the front tires along....

he's probably using something with a 4 1/2" bolt circle. i have seen guys using newer mustang wheels. i plan on using the stock sxt 17" rims on mine.
The problem with that is how wide can you go. That is what I ran into with the stock R/T rims
lafrad

I think the best you can do for the front is an 18" wheel... as they are already pretty close to interferring with the brakes.
Probably a stock wheel with a narrow profile 18" snow tire or something should work pretty well...

The fit on the cragar steel wheels is pretty tight but the 17x9 and 5 x 4.5 does fit quite well. But let me warn you they are the heaviest wheel I have EVER lifted. I will be swapping mine out for some alloys soon. They have to weigh 35-40lbs each...no kidding.
Tony, I have the second tire listed the ET Street Radial. Hook like glue. I don't know of anything in between unless you want to step it up to a 18in tire and get something like the BFG 265/45/18 that RobAGD had on his car. They looked pretty sweet as I recall. But there is no comparison to how the tires stick. BFG are ok..but more or less a street tire....ET streets are unbelievable as are the M&H's due to the fact that it is drag tire compound with a couple grooves cut/molded in.
If you are shifting at 6200 then stick to a 26 in tire...our cars NEED that extra gearing to get out of the hole and unless you are running 114mph or so in 1/4 then they will keep you right at the top of third gear. If you prefer to shift at 5700 then you may want to get it closer to 27.5 to stay in third but it will be at the sacrifice of ET.

chris, i found some Hoosier R6 tires in 245/45-17, 255/45-17, and 275/40-17. i don't know how well this tires stick. Those are road corse tires.....they won't stick to good for drag racing.

I bought the 265/40/18 B.F.G.drag radials because I have read that a 26.2'' tall tire should put me through the top of the track at 5900/6000 rpm but that never happened it goes through the top at 5200/5300 with no better 60 foot (199) same as the contis.... am I missing something? Do I need a cam change(sidewinder/comp260) to get it to rev quicker? My 300c is stock and has run a best of 13.64 at 101.92 on the stock contis but no improvement with this tire change other than more consistent 60' times.I hope I'm not thread robbing but this looked like a good chance to get some answers. They do fit the stock wheels really well and I lost 25 lbs with this swap.

for your car, i would go with the 28" tall M&H racemasters in a 275/50-17. mickey thompson doesn't have that size. they have a 275/40-17 that is 26" tall.
So how does one select a tire height, would I be better served with a 26" or a 28"? I'll have 6250 rpm shift points with 6800 rpm red lines.

Obi to give you an idea on BBH's car we put my 26.4 BFG's 265 40 18 I think maybe 265 45 18.
Anywho, with his PCM / TCM Cat Back and AirRaid and tstat I was crossing the 1/4 mile right at the shift point of the car ( raced it in D )
That was a 300 SRT8, the 2nd step in the ESP off worked fine, no limp mode
Now he has a 28 tall 305 40 18 I think in the nitto tire, with the cam and head work he is getting close to 3rd gear shift, he has a bit more left.
Also I was getting just a smidge of tire squeel on teh 265's on launch leavig at about 1000-1500 rpm
So you have to figure where your car is power wise and where your going to end up and select the tire on that to keep you in 3rd in the lights.

While BBH's gearing is different, power wise we will be close enough, based on the builders calculations I'll be making peak power at 5800 - 6000 shifting at 6250. I guess best case is to run on my street tires to see approximately where I am RPM wise at the end of the run.

Guys, IMHO 5.7 cars are generally going to need one of two size tires if we are talking about optimizing 1/4 mile times.
5700 shift points: 26.4'' tire or in vicinity of.
6200 shift points: 25.7'' tire
I don't drive my DR's on the street at all so I am throwing aesthetics out the window here...(my car looks funny as hell with 25.7 in tires in the rear and 28 in SRT8 wheels in front). Anything bigger than what is listed above and I am confident you are leaving 60' and therefore ET on the table...period.
Depending on your 1/4 mph you will likely be able to use the 25.7 tire with the factory 5800 shift points until you put a cam/heads or other serious mods causing a serious increase in top end mph, putting you into 4th. At that point 6200 shift points are likely more suited for the combination anyways.
Track time has shown me that even with the stock cam it was advantageous to run the smaller tire and shift at 6200 rpm, allowing the car to get its big self up and out of the hole, keeping the car as close to the top of third as possible.

I'm glad I found this thread. I've been looking for what wheel tire combination to run at the track for a few months.
Couple of quick questions - I have an 06 Daytona
*Can I run 17" wheels on the rear and what offset? (I will only consider the 5X115 bolt pattern). I think the answer is yes if I read the previous post right.
*What tire can I run that gets me at the 25.7" height that Hemi C references above? (I am running a SC 91 tune with reduced torque mgmt and raised shift points - I'm also running nitrous with a window switch set at 2800 - 5900 so I'm thinking that'll keep me in 3rd with a few hundred RPM to spare at the top).
All I've run so far are the stock 18" wheels with stock Mich Pilots. As most of you probably know - wheel spin city, especially if the nitrous hits before the tires settle in and grip!!

Belts are probably orientated for rotation so the side wall can wrinkle yet remain DOT certified.

I'm running my stock 18" RT wheel wrapped in BFG 275/35/18 tires for a diameter of 25.6" on the rears and stock RT wheels with stock Goodyears on the front.
To run this combo, you will need a way to turn off ESP completely (NoESP, GSM, etc..) or HAL will shut you down. I haven't had it happen but, I haven't taken any chances either.
I usually hit the traps right @ ~6000 RPM in 3rd.
