Did you leave the original bulbs in there? Do you think that heat shield will not be needed? I took mine off too, but I changed to blue leds. I like it is a lot brighter.

It hasn't burned or melted anything in the last 1.5 years and I can't see it starting to out of nowhere.

Great! I'm giving it a shot.

How do you remove the plastic cover? (without breaking them)
I saw the pins on each side, I tried pushing them out with a flat screwdriver, but they're in there pretty deep, or do I have to remove the whole thing and get it from the back side?

I took that shield out when I went to LED's. To remove the cover, pry the front open.

Pull straight down. Sounds like you break them.
They can be replaced thou for less than $3@ + shipping.

Did it, much, much better without that boat of a heat shield covering 80% of the light bulb, no wonder it wasn't bright before.
And I wouldn't worry about the heat melting the plastic, there is plenty of space between the bulb and the lens.

Do I even need to say which one has been modded?

Lets keep an eye on this for a while, to make sure nuthin melts. I did this some time ago, but replaced my OEM bulbs with LEDs at the same time. No heat concerns at all.

Update here in a few weeks of usage and if all is still well we'll add it to the KB!

Why would removing something from behind the bulb make it burn more brightly. I'd think the reflective properties of the shield would be way better than having not reflection of the light?

Please "enlighten" me!

V-leds on ebay have white as well as blue for front map rear door handle then they also have the ones for the door trim bottom, I did all 6 from them and removed the shield with incredible results.

Well I pulled them out tonight. Funny how I thought of doing this before simply because the rear ones don't come with a heat shield but never really did it!

 Best way I found to remove the lens is start at the back...where the mirror is. There is a slot in there for prying the lens out. Pop one side out, then the other and you can pull the lens out (towards the mirror) Other ways on here I think you can break the tab in front if not done right. Hope that helps anyone trying to get the lens off. Foxtail.
