Nearly 500 new transmissions missing

Associated Press

KOKOMO, Ind. -- DaimlerChrysler AG is seeking police help in finding hundreds of newly manufactured transmissions that have failed to SHOW up at plants in Mexico after being loaded onto trucks for shipment.

DaimlerChysler officials told police that 386 transmissions FROM one Kokomo plant and 95 others FROM another had not reached their destinations in Mexico. It was not the first time that DaimlerChrysler transmissions, valued at about $1,000 apiece, have gone missing.

“We have been working with local authorities to identify the reason the transmissions are not making their way FROM two Kokomo plants to various plants in Mexico,” Mary Beth Halprin, a spokeswoman for the automaker, said last week. “This is not a one-time incident. We’ve been tracking the transmissions for a few months trying to find a pattern to the shipment of the transmissions.”

Police Sgt. Tom Mygrant said detectives did not immediately have suspects."

Only the 5-Speed 300C and Magnum RT tranny is built there.

Then why were they heading to mexico?

Because all, yes all the 5.7Liter Hemi MDS engines for the LX cars are built in Mexico? True!

Seams like a lot of shipping.. Trany sent FROM IND to MEX to get shipped back to ONT.
Do they test then as set(pair) in Mexico?

Probably so. They must do a base line power test with the tranny fixed to the engine or something. The Brampton facility must only assemble the final cars.

Mexico plant builds the Hemi
Kokomo plant builds the 5-Speed

They sound better then the 604’s. The one thing that sounded cheap
Was when you changed FROM reverse to drive and the trany made a loud buzz and thunk. As it changed direction. This happens in all DC mini vans, my old Stratus . Hated it! Hated it! Hated it! Yes I Hated it!
The new 5speed is smooth, and silent. A real pleasure to drive!

The buzz you hear is the solenoid sending tranny fluid somewhere to make it go forward. You should have no thump when shifiting FROM one R to D. Thats strange!

Yeah the buzz of that solenoid just sounded cheap. I took my Stratus ES back to the dealer about that and he told me to listen to any of the FWD DC cars.. Yup. Same sound.
So it was a "feature" I had to live w/..
