View Full Version : Are there any 'RETRO' things that YOU would like to see again?!

Hi Guys!! :)
There are a LOT of design features from the past that - so far - have yet to make a come back. Use your imagination and tell me what 'retro' things YOU would like to see again?! [On perhaps the LY cars - or whatever]
Not exactly sure what I mean?! Well... vinyl roofs, for one. Or how about white wall tires? Or maybe a 'Continental Kit'? How does a two-tone paint job - from the factory sound? Or maybe 'real' wire wheels? Or velour upholstery? Or a C.B. radio and 8-Track tape player?! lol :p [Well... some are dead for a reason - I'll give you that!!] But there is no reason we shouldn't see 'fins' again - is there?! Or honest-to-goodness chrome bumpers? Or how about opera windows or lavaliere straps? Or cornering lamps? Or those turn-signal indicator lamps on the hood?! And speaking of hoods - why not a hood ornament? Or a T-Top roof?! OR a front bench seat OR a 50/50 split-bench seat? Or a column shift?
AND SO ON......
ME?!
I'd like to see white wall tires, two-tone paints, cornering lamps, hood ornaments, T-Tops and velour upholstery. [At least on the options list]
AND I KNOW this will make some of you gag - but I wouldn't mind seeing vinyl roofs again. [A vinyl roof is no sillier than some of the things we do NOW to our cars]
How about you?!
[You're certainly not bound by MY list]

1) Pushbutton auto trans
2) The Highland Park Hummingbird (listen to a 1960s MoPar starter)
3) The fender mount turn signals ARE cool
4) Better names; Dodge 6 cyl LX= Coronet, Dodge V8 LX= Polara, Dodge V8 SRT LX= D-500. Chrysler 6 cyl LX= New Yorker, Chrysler V8 LX= Three Hundred (and spell it out), Chrysler SRT V8 LX= continue the Letter Series.

They should bring back the coronet nameplate, too!
4) Better names; Either Dart or Polara for the Dodge LX and New Yorker for a 6 cyl. powered Chrysler LX

I think all the things on your list died for a good reason....lol.
I would like to see the price of my car be like the prices years ago (under 10,000)
If you actually think about what goes into them, thats about all they should cost.
The sheetmetal is thinner, lots of parts are plastic, so they use less steel then they used to.
Computers cost less to make.
Robots do a lot of the work.
Motors are still internal combustion.
I guess the only thing that changed in manufacturing is the CEO's salaries.

swivel seats please.my thoughts, exactly. although, that might be a little tricky with the OCS (occupant classification system).
as an alternatice to swivel seats, how about a swing-away steering column a-la early 60s T-bird?

OK, since it doesn't look like I will do this any time soon, I'll let this idea out.
If I ever get the chance I want to hide the gas filler behind the taillight and smooth the side panel. This would probably include adding in a fuel safety valve to prevent fuel spilling in the event of a rearend accident.

Not impossible, DCX has a swivel front seat option available for handicapped individual's entry and exit. A friend of mines wife had it installed on her Pacifica, and it was pretty sweet. Made her life a lot easier.

Hm...cool thread.
I'd like to see wing windows, footwell air vents (remember? pull the lever, and you'd get fresh air from the kick panel area), chrome bumpers, fender mount turn signals, cornering lights, real chrome in the interior, and more choices in interior colors (remember when the upholstery matched the exterior?). I would not mind seeing fins again, but that might be weird on a wagon!

Funny you say that. I thought the same but was pondering just adding them as somekind of add-ons to the tail lights. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r85/txswimdad/Misc%20pics%20for%20reference%20links/linedrawingmagnum-fin-1.jpg

are these for the passenger seat as well? the driver's seat shouldn't be a problem as it only has a track position sensor. it's the passenger seat i was thinking about, with the strain guage weight sensors. i suppose they could use the whoopee cushion (air bladder) style from the caravans instead.

I always dug that cool chrome speaker mounted in the back seat of the late '50s GM's. The big Impalas, 98s, Bonnevilles, Roadmasters, etc. While we're at it, let's go for some reverb while we're listening to Connie Francis, Ray Charles, the Fleetwoods, and the Platters. Man, those were the days!
The light weight, stripped down, factory Drag Racers. Like the 63/64 Max wedge cars or the 65 acid dipped Hemi's. Be nice to see what our cars would really do if they went on a diet.

When I ordered new cars in the 60's and 70's, I had a choice of cloth or leather, more interior colors (any color interior with any color exterior), bench or bucket seats, with or without console, different tire sizes (whitewall or blackwall), different wheel styles or hubcaps, single, dual or triple tone paint, single or dual exhaust, 3 speed, 4speed, or auto, rear speakers, tinted or not, hardtop or sedan, single or dual outside mirrors, backup lights or not, radio or not, 3 or 4 different engine sizes in ANY of the body styles (models), 3 or 4 rear-end ratios, posi or not. Ordering a car was like ordering coffee at Starbucks. And you only had to wait 4-8 weeks to get your car.

Factory two-tone, definitely fins, definitely more interior colors (though porsche will make your leather literally any color you want on the 911 and Carrerra)..........
You know what? I'd like to see a '59 El Dorado, a Tucker Torpedo, an Auburn Boattail Speedster, a '71 Chevelle... any of them brought back to market with today's manufacturing standards and features.

i would love to see T-Tops make a come back
also i second the gas cap hidden behind stuff (tail light mentioned before) but i'd probably prefer the hidden behind the license plate style
...or some modern tech, like a interior gas cover release like most import cars, so you don't have to worry about ppl stealing/messing with your gas, never understood why these are absent from most domestic cars
oh and a somewhat new addition, how about speedo projected on to windshields again? i remember seeing this on some one nissan 240s

Great ideas, guys!! :)
How about hidden highlights? And I don't mean pop-ups - I mean hidden - like the 1974 - 1975 Imperial had. [Among others] Speaking of which - wouldn't our 300C's look pretty sharp with a 'retro' 1975 Imperial front end?! [Including that wonderful waterfall grill] And how about those tear-drop taillights - too?! [I kid you not]
And what about tufted-buttoned leather seats? And like many of you have already suggested... MORE INTERIOR COLOUR OPTIONS PLEASE!! Sheesh... enough with the 'earth tones'. Will that be black or tan? Black or tan? Black or tan?! AAAGGHHHH!!! Wouldn't a 300C SRT8 with a beautiful 1950's WHITE exterior and RED LEATHER interior look beautiful?! I would say do.
And how about a proper antenna?! I don't think radio stations have ever sounded as good since 'we' went with those back window imprint antenna strips. [Or whatever they are]
[If I can think of more - I'll let you know!!]

3) The fender mount turn signals ARE cool
I completely agree! They were practical... all you had to do was look at your hood on each side to see turn signal indicators, and high beam indicators.
How about the foot operated high beam switch....so simple.
I miss these too. We have enough to do with our hands when we're driving!
OK, since it doesn't look like I will do this any time soon, I'll let this idea out.

Its already been done on a Magnum. I rememebr seeing the pic about a year or so ago. The left taillight slid out on two retractable rails and behind that was the filler. It was AWESOME.
how about the viberant colors that they used to use like plum crazy purple ! and so on
Charger Daytonas for 07 are in Plum Crazy, TorRed, Sublime, GoManGo, and Top Banana.

Better idea: the grille and rear treatment from the 1969-71 Chrysler 300.

See my prior posts... a "300C" is a 1957 Chrysler. The "300C SRT-8", being heir to the Letter Series as it is (limited production, tremendous performance) should more properly be the 300-N. That said, the color scheme sounds cool.

The trim ring is designed to duplicate as closely as possible the original Old School shakers. Of course you could leave it off and finish out the hood any way you like. The first 2 pics are Original 'Cuda, the third is mine.

A lot of the things mentioned are cool and very retro, but I for one like the direction cars have gone in for what they are. Many of the new cars would look strange with some of these things.
Now, on the retro cars I see definite retro touches that need to be available. Like on the Challenger, it absolutely has to have a functional Shaker hood available. The chin spoiler, fender ducts, even the painted wheels with dog dish hubcaps could be cool. Lets just stay away from the AAR style exit in front of the rear wheels exhaust.
One retro thing I've seen on an LX was an old style Hurst shifter that looked awesome, but they're not being produced. I think that was one of the coolest things I've seen on an LX.

not sure if retro but I would like to order a car to my likes ,, If I want black bezel headlamps and no side molding maybe even a black grill on my Mag RT why not ? also there are many things that come only as packages like supplemental air bags why can't i get them without self sealing tires and air filtering? this is only one example of many but I will keep it short.. we still have choices but like ordering fast food ..
will that be option PKG I , II , III .. would you like an apple pie with that .. I mean floormats .
Maybe I just ordered from the wrong dealer but they told they can't customize their orders. Unless I buy the parts from the parts dept. and pay to have put on in the shop when my new car arrives!

Actually, it would be nice to order any model with no options and any engine size you want for that 'sleeper' effect. Imagine how many you'd catch unawares with an SE with a 6.1 L hemi?

Just yesterday I saw my first 300C with a vinyl roof. Not to knock anyone that has one, but in my opinion only, it is tacky and takes away from the "C's" looks. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
