View Full Version : I really miss Raised White Letter Tires

What the hell happened. It really just dawned on me, that over the past 5 years, wheels have become like bicyles and wagons, and nothing but a 1/4 inch of sidewall. Who the hell started this nonsense?
I was looking at the pics of my car versus the 60's ones I had and I remember all my Goodyear tires and the RWL and now I shopped around for them, they dont seem to exist anymore. Only gaudy 10 speed rims with Huffy written all over it.
When the hell is this fad goig to end?? I want my nice thick sidewalls and raised white letters.
Geez, I must be old, because I sure remember growing up, the cool cars were the ones with POWER not what rims and light bulbs you had.
That seems to be all thats out there, a flood of useless junk and who has got wheels that look like they should be Michael Landons Wagon in Little House on the Prairie fitted with concert flood lights to blind everyone across the highway simply asking for a nice head-on collision and a 1930's steam radiator cover from your granny, used as a grille.
call me nuts or old, i dont care, but man, do i miss the days of REAL modifications and i hate to tell you, the LAST thing I look at on a car is the rims and tires, I look at the CAR and paint first, then the engine then the interior, then the wheels, then under the car.
ok rant over.

I don't know how old you are, but I would like to see the red line tires again. I think they would look good on these cars. If you don't know what I'm talking about, they had a red stripe, about 3/8" instead of a whitewall.
I think they were goodyears. they were a must have, back then. anyone else remember those?

I used to have to have white letter tires on any tires I bought. Now I do not even like white walls..I would just have them turned to the inside if that was my only choice. Amazing how times change. :)

Yea, I really miss the good old days of scrubing the white letters with ajax cleanser to keep them white. Like that was alot of fun. The best thing that ever happened was getting rid of white sidewalls and white letters.
Whose stupid idea was that in the first place?

as opposed to how long it takes to properly clean a set of chrome 22" rims?
I love white letter tires. BF Goodrich tires on Torq Thrusts of Cragars - :thumbs_u:

Yeah I really hate the decreased body roll, increased cornering ability and greater road feel of my 20's.

I have been searching for raised white/yellow letter tires for a while. The information I get is that they are available for 14" and 15" rims (I suppose for the restorers of the muscle car era autos).
At this time there is little market for 18" and higher rim tires with raised letters, hence I don't expect to find them anywhere.
Maybe I should consider putting 15's on my Magnum. I bet that would be cheap! Might as well tub it while I spending $,$$$.

hell yeah...just make sure you use slot mag wheels, put a Dana 60 rear end in it, get some traction bars, and install a straight pipe exhaust with Purple Hornies at the end.

And with todays technology in rubber, why would you lose it having a higher profile? I didnt say ridiculous thick. But a 1/4 inch to the street is not what I want, gimme about 1-2 inches and chuck some white letters on the sides. Thats cool.

Slightly younger than the red lines. Im 38, I was in the days of Goodyear decent sidewalls with thick raised white letters. Thats what I miss, the LOOK. Though I dont really want tires from the 60's or 70's technology, just the look for my Charger.

Umm grease pen worked fine, took about 2 minutes, whats so hard about that? My question is who's stupid idea was it to remove the choice?
Im being forced to only choose bewteen looking like a broken down suspensioned car rim-to-street riding so hard, it BENDS the rims.
Dont I deserve a choice? What makes you so special and me not?

Keep searching, if you find them, let me know.
I did see that Goodyear has some but they put that DUMB Nascar letters on it as well and the largest rim is 17, so no good for me.

I, too, like the taller sidewall tire. But, blackwalls work best. Last set of whitewalls was on my '77 Cutlass. Last raised while letters was on my '84 Camaro.
That being said, all we need is for Snoop Dog to do one video with a car that has 17 inch rims and raised white letters and we'll be back in thick. Go figure...

Yea your right about THAT!! Im not much into total sidewall, Im more into just the RWL for a more performance look. I hate to admit but to me the white sidewalls are a little too elegant and I can see my dad using them, but for me, the RWL is all I want.
Im gonna try the grease pen on my Conti's just to see how it turns out, maybe a little white paint to get it started, the Contis arent gonna make it into the spring based on the racing ive been doing, so now is the time to try. lol
Or better yet, Ill get some poor guy named and worth Fifty Cents to do it. He could use the work, or Snoopy Dog to just endorse it like they do with car games, then everyone would be like, Ohh cool, gotta do that to my car!! lol

Seems like the Red Line tires were Uniroyal Tiger Paws (GTO). The first Firestone Wide Ovals I remember seeing were OE on a '67 Mustang GT. Those Red Lines were higher profile (like 7.75 x 14") & not much traction. The 2 '66 GTX Street Hemi's in the area had Good Year 'Blue Streaks' Seems like they had 1 or 2 thin blue stripes. Last car I had with white letter tires was a '78 Merc Zephyr (302) that had BFG T/A's .

I love that photo! I'd love to have a set of RWL for my Mag. If I thought it'd last, I'd paint the letters on my ComforTreads.

Buggy whips! Where the heck can I get some buggy whips??? j/k I always liked the raised white letters on my old BFG Radial TA's back in the day, but using some wet-look stuff on my blackwalls keeps my Magnesium Pearl Mag lookin' pretty much all business too.

Oh thats a definite on the WET LOOK. I ALWAYS do that with ALL tires. When you combine it with some nice Raised White Letters, it looks sooooo sharp!
