View Full Version : Custom SRT8 Wheels: Major Wheel Porn Inside! (Dialup beware)

Stage 1:
Fellow member Redfox0099's put his custom SRT8 take offs up for sale
http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php?t=40997&highlight=wheels
As you can see in that link, he had them stripped and the spokes powder coated black. Red had one hell of a vision:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/b3713b88.jpg
And on his gorgeous Magnum:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/a45da197.jpg
A quick photoshop of these rims on my Magnum convinced me these were a must have:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/reds_rim.jpg
Stage 2:
Red and I struck a deal and over the next few weeks we arranged shipping details. Red was smack dab in the middle of SEMA prep, and yet still found time to personally drive my new rims from the shop his car was at to the FedEx drop location.
Unfortunately, something happened between when the rims came off his rig, and when they showed up on my doorstep. Something got on the rims and completely trashed the finish. Nothing I, or my detail guy could do could bring the rims back to their beautiful state pictured above.
(No pics of this damage; it was too scary for our PG audience.)
Stage 3:
I contacted Red and told him about the problems. He didn't hesitate; he told me to get them fixed up right and to consider our part of the financial deal done. This absolutely floored me as I still owed him 50% of the purchase price. Yep, my friend Redfox0099 forgave that debt and told me to take those funds and get the rims fixed up right. What can you say to that, except wow, and thank you. No way I could have got them fixed up any time soon except for this.
Stage 4:
I got in touch with an industrial finishing shop that is known for one off rim work. They quoted me a fair price and set to work sand blasting the rims raw, powdering them cool vanilla and masking off the insides so they stay cool vanilla. Here is one rim after the first powder and mid tape off.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/wheel1.jpg
They then set to sanding down the spokes and outer rim, for the 2nd, black powder coat. That was completed today and by end of the day today they were to begin spraying them down with a protectant clear coat!!
Stage 5:
Here are a few pics from today's (11/7) progress:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/almostdone3.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/almostdone2.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/almostdone1.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/almostdone4.jpg
The shop initially thought they'd be done today, but they contacted me and asked if I could give them an extra day; they have a new clear coat powder they want to use on these rather than a clear paint. They said this new covering would be nearly indestructable, and I said "Duh, take the extra day!"
Stage 6:
Without adieu, I give to you...
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels2.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels1.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels3.jpg
With some sun (anyone know how to to stop a digital camera from washing out like this?)...
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels5.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels4.jpg
And a couple install shots
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels6.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels7.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels8.jpg
This is what I had in mind nearly two years ago when I drove her off the lot. I didn't know how, and I didn't know when, but I knew it was out there to be had. Yep, there are some details to take care of and there are still things to do, but overall she is now what I always thought she could be.

are they still taking the S out of SRT?
CoolVanilla
11-07-2006, 12:50 AM
are they still taking the S out of SRT?We did kick around ideas of how to handle that. They don't do metal work, and we guessed that regular body filler would eventually crack or flake out. My option was to spend significant $$ to have them shipped to a metal shop for some filler welding and sanding, or just have them powder the S black along with the spoke and outer rim. So thats what I decided. The RT will remain cv though. Should look ok I think :thumbs_u:

Interesting! He was commenting on the metal of the wheels, or the weld job to remove the SRT logo?
$150 is very reasonable. Prolly would have pulled the trigger if I could have matched that deal locally here.
PS: Drop dead sexy rig Trojan. Can't wait to check it out in person back at Willow one of these days :racing:

He said the metal the wheels were made of was'nt good quality, said it was blistering like there was pot metal in the wheels. My original plan was to weld them up and fully polish the faces and do black in between, but after they welded them and polished them I wasnt satisfied with the "one" spoke on each wheel that was welded. So I had him sand them down and painted. Powder coated would be the best. :beerchug:

I gotta tell ya, I'm blown away at how great those came out!
It was actually my idea originally, and I had asked some fellow members to do a PS for me. I quickly rethought the idea of the black spokes once I saw it, but Red liked the look and went for it.
I actually prefer doing it the opposite way... chromed 5 star and lip with the pockets and dish in black. I may still do this.
But when you splashed on the CV, it really made a HUGE difference! The PS of them on your car looks great and I cannot wait to see the finished product!

Paint is just paint.
Powder coating is fused onto the metal and more or less becomes part of it. It can be done in any color and is much more durable.
http://www.finishing.com/Library/pennisi/powder.html
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is by far the youngest of the surface finishing techniques in common use today. It was first used in Australia about 1967.
Powder coating is the technique of applying dry paint to a part. The final cured coating is the same as a 2-pack wet paint. In normal wet painting such as house paints, the solids are in suspension in a liquid carrier, which must evaporate before the solid paint coating is produced.
In powder coating, the powdered paint may be applied by either of two techniques.
The item is lowered into a fluidised bed of the powder, which may or may not be electrostatically charged, or
The powdered paint is electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the part. The part is then placed in an oven and the powder particles melt and coalesce to form a continuous film.
There are two main types of powder available to the surface finisher:
Thermoplastic powders that will remelt when heated, and
Thermosetting powders that will not remelt upon reheating. During the curing process (in the oven) a chemical cross-linking reaction is triggered at the curing temperature and it is this chemical reaction which gives the powder coating many of its desirable properties
CoolVanilla
11-07-2006, 07:04 PM
What Is The Difference Between Paint And Powdercoating?
Powder is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin. The powder is electrically charged and then sprayed onto the surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded wheel. The wheels are then heated in a curing oven. The heat causes the powder to fuse into a smooth hard coating. The result is a uniform and durable finish.
which is better?
IMHO, powder is preferable in this application as it (1) is very resistant to fading, (2) is a much harder surface than paint to better resist chipping and (3) can withstand a far wider range of chemicals that might otherwise destroy a painted surface.
Thanks Matt! As far as cleaning... well I'm optimistic in finding a painted wheel cleaner that will work without harming the clear. That powder clear is really gonna make a huge difference I think. Time will tell.

Thanks for the tip on the cleaner. I'll definitely pick some up.
Anyone know if black lugs are something a local auto parts store might carry? What specific size are these guys? Hopin to get a set before install tomorrow.
And as for showing it, she still needs some work done before I'd feel good about entering her in anything. That whole front fascia needs to be repainted and covered in the clear bra stuff to prevent nicking again. The fogs are completely trashed and need to be replaced. And the shaker base... well I need to get mopowers dual intake deal I think to pretty it up; we hacked the current base up real good at the MFO5 to make them intakes fit.
Some day I'll show her off a bit more. Just a few more tweaks away...

With some sun (anyone know how to to stop a digital camera from washing out like this?)...
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/CoolVanilla/SRT8%20Rims/newwheels5.jpg
Thought someone else would've answered this.
Assuming you’re using a point-n-shoot digital camera and DON’T have the ability to attach a lens shade and/or polarizer and actually want to try something different and shoot with the sun in view.
Just my thoughts When shooting into direct light (sun), overexpose the image (set the +/- exposure compensation +1 or 2 stops). The camera's meter is trying to average the whole scene for exposure and when it senses all that light it underexposes the image to average the scene and not have subject washed out.
Using the camera's flash would be an another option. Force the flash to go off and should expose the car well depending on camera's flash range and distance, etc. I like to use flash in daytime with people to reduce harsh shadows on the face caused by intense (sun) light.
Try this based on what you HAVE, not what more you would have to buy.

I've heard the word "striking" more than a couple times today.
The word that came to my mind was "stunning"!
I have to join the choir that has been singing the "Best Mod Yet" hymn!

Your 'over'-exposure was fine. Lens flair is what is robbing your scene of contrast. Too much light streaming directly on the optics and creating a halo on all of the glass elements.
Lens shades on professional 35mm lenses are designed to extend from the front element of the glass just as far as they can't be seen thru the viewfinder.
Sometimes flair is unavoidable but sometimes it also works to hold out your other hand in front of the camera, just out of scene, but enough to stop the sun from shining on your lens.
Fill flash works fine for people in that circumstance, but on a car i just looks nasty. Natural light on a bright overcast day, sunrise/sunset on a clear day with a polarizing filter is your friend for automotive photography.

Thanks for the tips brad. Great lookin Mag! I'll certainly give that a go next wash.
For those that are considering something like this, and are concerned with keeping them clean, check this out. We had our first rain of the season here Monday. Here is what the rims look like after driving thru that rain, and yesterday and today thru some still wet stuff with lots of grime.
You can see the black is pretty covered:

The dirt literally wipes off though; here is a shot after I swiped my finger on the cool vanilla:

If you do something like this, I strongly recommend a finish coat; ideally a clear powder since, as you can see, the dirt just flat doesn't stick to it.

Man CV, those wheels looked great on the rack. But now seeing them on, you have one stunning ride! You gotta have one of the baddest maggies I've seen.

It always makes me nervous when I see an air hose around a car when the wheels are going on!

Jason, those are simply beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice work.
I have an extra set of CHSRT8 wheels/tires sittin in my garage, and I'd love to do some custome paint work myself, but I need the money, and I already promised Mosie they're his!

The proof of the pudding... Jason.
They're every bit as functional and maintainable as they are drop-dead gorgeous. :thumbs_u:
Good show!

However, I feel that they still won't look as good as Jasons complete package, no matter what I do to them.

WOW!!!! Jason, those look SWEEEET, we almost took those wheels in on trade from Red when he bought his chrome ones from us. Had i known you would end up with them and wanted the S filled in you could have had RED send them to us and i would have filled them in and prepped them for free just to see someone doing something different. I guess its the car guy in me wanting to see innovative stuff. So far we have repaired about 15 various SRT8 wheels, so i know what the welder was talking about when he said something about the metal being poor quality. we had difficulty repairing some of the ones we did a well. You would think that for the cost of these wheels Alcoa would have used a higher quality metal alloy than they did. great job on the wheels though, even with the black S they still look fantastic.

I actually kind of like that the S is still there, but blacked out. To me, it has a certain style...a kind of spunky attitude. It's like you're saying, "SRTs? Yeah, I killed one and took its wheels. Them's good eatin'!"
