I am in Odessa at the Permian Basin Oil Show..........

Following some buddies so they could show me the "best" place to park.....

A Mercury Grand Marquis cut in front of me and parted us.........

We were going about 35 - 45 and the glare from his rear glass was blinding........

As we came up to a light, about 6 cars in front of me locked up his brakes..........

So then the chain started..............

Everyone missed each other till it got to me..........

I smashed the front of my Magnum.........right into the arse of the Mercury.

The guy driving the Merc is fine, I was taken by ambulance to the emergency room.........

X-rays show I'm in one piece........dislocated shoulder and blunt trauma to the upper chest, shoulder and clavical.

I'm in a sling and back to work by 1300............

Car is stuck in Odessa...........trying to get USAA to ship car to Houston.

I'll be devistated for a few more days.............

BTW, airbags never deployed...........this is strange considering a smashed the WHOLE front end, took out the radiator, condensor, hood, 1 head light, and 1 fender.

Just got a call.........insurance is MAKING ME fix it in Midland.

Then make them add on several first-class round trip airline tickets during the process so you can inspect the vehicle at various stages of completion!!
THEN... put yer foot up the arse!

I am glad your injuries were things that heal!

I would be PISSED at the insurance agency... there should be no reason that the car needs to be fixed where it was broke...

usaa will try to get it fixed there. they did the same with my truck when it was stolen and then wrecked in south texas by the people of wetnes.

ended up in a scrap yard awaiting a repair estimate that got all jacked up. tried to settle with me for 1300 bucks when there was over 18,000 in damage.

lawyers wheer called ect and after 6 months the ins company, usaa, agreed to get it back to houston for a estimate to be done.

once it got here, the estimate was done and it was totaled out over night after the motor blew as the adjuster climbed under neath the truck covering him with things he didnt want on him.

dont give in, it has to get back to houston some way.

My dad wrecked my mag with similar damage, though he was better off himself. The airbags never deployed. You should do what I did. Now is the perfect time for a 300c conversion.

The main thing I am concerned about has been satisfied.. YOU are gonna be ok.. NOW THEN... about them airbags... Can you get an investigator in on this?

10-18-2006, 04:08 PM
They cannot MAKE you get it fixed in Midland. They also do not have to transport your car to Houston for you. You will have to transport it to Houston if that's where you want it fixed, but they cannot mandate where repairs are done.

Airbags only go off when they need to. It doesn't sound like they needed to. Doesn't sound like you sustained "serious" injury, which is what airbags prevent.

Correct.......they can't MAKE ME fix it in Midland, but its where they will do it for the "deal". I can pay to have it shipped to Houston but I have no clue what that will be.

I am in pain but am trying to "make it happen here" in the 4th qtr.

I will prob do some custom stuff now that its in 1,000 pieces.

I forgot how bad it hurts to see something like this.........

Most of the damage was due to the front end diving under hard braking.......it was if his frame met my sheet metal. My sheet metal lost!:owned:

If the old man in the Merc will give me a second chance, I think I can do more damage to his car a second time. :loser:

Sooooo, I'll be leaving in a bit to grab the keys to my rented Impala...

dude, they can't make you fix it in midland. You can make em pay to fix it tho.
This is what we pay premiums for, man. I am tired of jicky insurance companies lieing to save a dollar or to offer a kick back to a brother in law.
They pay lowest estimate. I'd hit all YOUR brothers in law for those if I were you. I'd hit two of the most expensive places around then go the the place I wanted to have the work done and get ther lowest estimate plus some cool custom throw ins from em.
Glad your ok, man. Don't let em tell ya who to take care of yur baby for a while.

Okay........first thing first.

My Impala turned into a 4 cly Taurus. :blam: I just need it to finish my business here in Odessa / Midland.

Next........USAA has my contract which states that they ONLY have to pay for it to get to one of THEIR contractors. That cost is to Midland; any further and its my cost.

My thoughts were to rent a Uhaul truck and their dolly and tow it back on the dolly. Thoughts or concerns?

Someone told me their top speed is 50 mph.... Thats like a 12 - 14 hour trip now.......like watching slugs screw! (thats slow) Consider that maybe 200 miles is @ 80 mph limit.

Uhaul quoted me $345 for a 10' truck w/ dolly (what the hell is a 10' truck)?

I'm thinking I will tow it to my house then have USAA tow it to Helfman Dodge in Houston.........(Kelly's brother's dealership).

I have a 3rd vehical to drive........thank God I kept my 97 Suburban 4x4!

USAA personal claims called and wanted to talk to me about how bad I was hurt.........I told her I, thus far, wanted to keep my bodily damage out of the conversation until I talked to my health insurance folks..........the lower $$$$$ I can keep this thing the better!

This is the hardest way to get your heads/cam/exhaust/CAI/flash/grill/paint done...........I wouldn't recommend it to ANYONE! The emotional and physical pain isn't worth it.........

It will be awhile till I can do this :hammer: ..........(wanting an excuse to use that stupid thing):Na_Na_Na_Na:

I am considering doing something like Redfox did with is paint but instead of black on red, imagin Silver Steel on Magnisium (green).:bling:

thats a great idea, but I ask that you look at a map and see where Houston and Odessa are......

For all the non-Texans.......that the distance across 2 of most other states. More than 550 miles......

Does a dolly really CAUSE damage? I have no idea so I really need to know.

Does a dolly really CAUSE damage? I have no idea so I really need to know.If you use a dolly you need to disconect the driveshaft or tow the car backwards. If you don't disconnect the driveshaft kiss the tranny goodbye. You may be too wide for the dolly as well with the Mag.You will also be pulling the car by the front suspension,a point not meant for that kind of stress, thats why thse cars are not supposed to be towed by a regular tow truck. And 550 miles will be much more comfortable with a trailer,U-Haul rents those too.

Real sorry to hear about the wreck but glad your ok . If I were you I would do anything possible to get the car close to home.I made the mistake with my wreck of letting the repairs be done close to the accident.
I am also pretty shocked your air bags didn't go off. I would look into that after all is said and done and make sure they are functional.

You should have ANY problems with the maggie... However, if you can, get someone else in that rig with you... If your should is dislocated, you DONT want to be driving that long of distance with it. I have done it, and it can be painful, I am glad I wasnt driving.

if you can, get a friend, and you take a pain pill..

The have dolly's that slide under the BACK tires too... tie off to them, and just follow along the front ones.

Best bet.... would be to find someone who races Hobby-stock or SUper stock race cars... they usually end up having a Full Sized car trailer, and the tow vehicle...
And most of them will tow it for gas and a couple of cases of beer...

Sorry to hear you're banged up and having to deal with a bunch of craziness. Hope all works out well in the end.

The airbag deployment failures mentioned in this thread are beginning to worry me since my buddy who owns a body shop recently put a new nose on an 05 Mag RT that was heavily damaged in the front. The bags didn't deploy on it and I asked him why and he said they discovered as they were repairing the car that the sensors for the airbags that should have caused them to trigger were disabled because the wires attached to them had been sheered off instantly by the impact. I would think those wires being cut should be reason enough to fire the bags but instead it rendered them useless because the sensors went dead before they could register enough of the impact to deploy them. They showed me where the wires run under the hood and they are vulnerable to being damaged or cut under impact very quickly.

Maybe others here more knowledgable than me can shed some light or I will be glad to ask my friend for more details. I'm pulling this from memory from a couple of months ago and may be a bit hazy on the details.

Once again, Lee, wishing you the best.

update: Its not a dolly my wife got quoted.......it was a trailer!

She went to the website, put in where I was and where I was going. She put in for the truck and something to tow an auto. It asked what type and if it was fwd/rwd/or awd.

She later talked to a gal on the phone and she too wanted to know what type of car.........they actually have the numbers (weight, length, width) for the LX's.

I will call this place here in Odessa and go check out the equipment before they get my credit card. If I have to go to Home Depot or where ever, and buy new/good straps, I will.

I think I can do this..........:chill:

I saw my front end today........

both fenders are on, hood was on, new radiator, condens, and head lights are wired in.

Tomorrow while at drill (USAR), I'll post pictures of the wreck and what it looks like now.

Little secret...........big news here!

First off, thanks to Nick Danger and those that came before me to pave the way and Jaak for helping with wiring.

My version of the Magnum 300C will have the Zenon (sp?) lights, working headlight sprayers, and be non-black.

This came purely by accident....no pun.

We bought a totaled out 300C.......hit from the rear and destroyed the frame. They took a saw and cut the front off........I got the wiring harness, radiator, condens, the inner fenders, fenders, hood, fog lights, EVERYTHING!

My car is a 2005, so I have the door molding extensions where the 2006 doesn't..........I had the chance to use them again or do something different......

I plan on leaving them off and putting the old skool R/T there from reproduction 70-71 on the sides behind the frt wheels.

I had the back de-badged, I left the Rams head for now.......I plan on cutting up the 300C that use to go on the side and have the Ram removed from the rear and replaced with JUST the big C in the shield.

Right now, I had this thing put together with the stock grill, but I intend to put the Dub grill on.........

It gets sprayed Mon / Tues.........should be done by weeks end.......I went back with stock green (Magnesium) and left the door molding on because it seems to go well with all the new chrome I now have with the 300C frt end.

I will update tomorrow.........

Once I'm done..........then the HEAT heads, cam, Air Hammer, and full exhaust.

It looks like it was no big deal huh?

Lemme tell you, this was a nightmare........I left the scene in an ambulance; had to get someone ( a buddie) who was in another truck to take all my valuables; hid my gun because he couldn't take it and I couldn't take it; had to get a ride from the hospital; get a ride from a whole other person to go pick up my rental; get my valuables; goto the wreck yard to retrieve my pistol; return the rental car; get picked up by Uhaul; go back to the wrecker yard; load car (yes it drove right up with no power steering, no belt, no tentioner, no radiator); then get my stuff from the oil/gas show; then drive non-stop back to Houston.........thats like across 3 normal sized states for you non-Texans!

So...........here we are..........my shoulder, chest and back are good to go!

Car should come out of the body shop by Friday (Helfman Dodge)...

Here are some sneak peeks.........

like I said above.........those 300C embs and the molding will come off just leaving my Magnum molding.....I actually like it.

Imagine the old skool R/T from the early 70's in place of the HEMI or the 300C badges............

All the embs from the rear are being taken off..........where the Ram head WAS.......now imagine just the big shield with the C there.....

So.........I guess I'm calling this hybred a R/T C

While others have done it, and those look great, from my understanding, I'll be the first with everything working........fogs, fancy headlights, and headlight sprayers..........(I will be wiring them to the rear wiper button so when I spray the rear window, I'll also be spraying the frt headlights).

Right now, the stk grill will be going in it (stk 300C).........but the Dub - mesh grill will be going in very shortly.....

I also plan for the 300SRT wheels that Bone is selling.......I am thinking about trying his 315's out back with 255's up front........

Mosey is also selling me his SRT8 suspension, so it should l ower it just a tad...........1/2" - 1" from what I've heard.

Then it goes to Kelly at HEAT.............

Expect me to run his heads, with Frank Racing to do some combution chamber work to raise the compression to 10.5:1, HEAT Stg I cam, stk SRT8 headers (grinded opening), SRT8 mid-pipe / cats, and JBA cat-back, Air Hammer, and a B&GII.

From there, expect a 100 shot...............

Then some suspension tricks I've been trying to work out, a converter, and small drag radials.........my goal is a 11.99 - 12.29 while having the looks of what Dodge could have made......

well, what I ment was; looking at pictures its hard to imagine.......it looks like I had a wreck then just put it on a trailer and drove home.........its the full story thats wild!

I failed to mention I drove home with one arm in a sling.

Thx for the words......I hope it looks as good as I have it in my mind.

Its too bad you couldn't rent the trailer from uhaul, and a 2500 deisel from Enterprise or something... That box truck experiance had to be quite a bit worse than what your words share...

the airbags was a huge part of our discussions......

Look carefully at those wreck pictures; primarily at the one that shows a side view of the front........

Notice that the frt bumper support is almost purfect.....crazy eh?

What happened was; as the guy in front of me SLAMMED on his brakes, his butt end went up........I SLAMMED on my brakes and my nose went down.

So, basicly he peeled the top of my car off.

Check out that one picture of the perfect hole in my frt plate.....that was his exhaust......you can see I turned my wheel trying to miss him.

The only thing that hit the bumper of my car was his exhaust tip and the very very bottom of his bumper which was plastic......

Soooooooooo.......him being in gear, me being on brakes, and no frame to frame inpact, they feel it wasn't hard enough. (tell that to my shoulder)

I was hurt due to the seat belt not riding well on my body.....I think I'm just too tall and the belt needs to go higher......just thinking out loud.

I know this weekend, I'm at drill (actually at gate guard right this second) and next week I'm in WY.

It should be out of paint and body by this coming up Fri..........

That means it gives me about 1 week and 1 weekend if I want to do any "under hood work".

I'll let Kelly set the pace........if he says "lets do it" then so be it.

I k now I won't have the dope on the car by then, no wheels, and no fancy grill............but even if I just show up it should still be an interesting conversation piece. :blah:

"what the hell is that thing?"

I'm gunna tell them I had a 300C that got hit from the rear so I put a Magnum back end on it! :Na_Na_Na_Na:

hey mom/RT is all the upgrades being paid for with crash funds? Seems like if it is your making out like a fat cat, Some times I pray that a Korean wouls smack my Magnum so I could do the same upgrade but the parts are so high, I think insurance would just cash out my car instead of repair. Glad its working out for you though and seems to be coming together. Cant wait to see how HEAT hooks up your car. Makes me want to move back To Oklahoma and drive down and get the hook up.

MomsR/T
11-04-2006, 10:21 AM
Yes........100% insurance.

I got over by us finding the totalled 300C.

As you can see in the pictures, one whole side was perfect, so I didn't need anything.......

I would have paid for 1 extra fender, 1 light, and all that extra paint.....

Well, with USED parts, I saved enough.........

One more thought here........the only reason I think I'm the first to do these lights is due to the price.......if you goto your dealer ship and ask him to price out these HID's, with balast, and pig tails (then figure in some wiring) you will be out $2,400+ (plus with wiring, Star Scan flash, materials).

Thats a bit rich for 99.9% of the people considering this..............for me it was just an added bonus and pure luck!

None of the other folks did the head light washers for the same reason........crazy cost! I got lucky again.......I bought the whole damn frt end.

To give you an idea however.........you can buy a whole frt clip for $2,500 - $4,000 depending on what comes with it and what modle it was (300T, 300C, 300SRT).

It seems people don't like the 300T front, but to me it would still be cool and you save a butt-load!

UPDATE*****

Got back in town around midnight last night from WY. I called Troy at the dealership yesterday and asked if I could come look at her today.......so we set it up even though they are closed.

We walked way way way in the back........I got there and almost cried she was so beautiful!

I reached down to grab my phone to snap a few pics and realized I left it in the truckl! :loser:

Daniel, Kelly's brother works there and will be doing some last minute deals with the wiring for the HID's, Starscan, alginment, and such.

ALMOST DONE!

I will be out of time for this weekend's M&G at Hennessey's track to do the performance stuff.........but she should be there looking HOT HOT HOT.

Well, the car is DONE!

So where's the pictures you ask?

Weeeeeeeell, I haven't taken delivery. Know why?

Cuz after Jaak went to the trouble of giving me a VERY DETAILED diagram of how to wire up the HID's to a non-HID Magnum, the bone heads decided "Well hell, it looks like it should just splice right in.........":loser:

So, with the pictures and diagrams, still printed out and laying on the dash...............untouched, when they went to turn on the lights, they notcied a flicker...........and flicker, and flicker.

I had read somewhere that this was an issue with the aftermarlet types.............but was hoping that with factory stock types, this won't be an issue........."IF THEY WOULD HAVE WIRED IT LIKE SHOWN!"

rrrrrrrrrrrr..............so we have hit the first delay.

As of now, we are waiting for Kelly's brother to look at whats been done.........if I am blessed, he will fix this today and I'll take delivery ASAP. Pictures to soon follow...........

I can tell you that I've seen it and its JAW DROPPING............that green (magnisium) is just plain wicked! I plan on quickly attaching AVON's painted pillar thinggies..........they have just been sitting here staring at me.

Wish me luck....................because I'll totally go POSTAL if I can't pick it up in the next couple of days.........I HAVE TO HAVE IT by this weekend for Hennessey's gig. :hammer:

Sounds like you were pretty banged up for that speed. I would have thought the airbag would have deployed too. I've heard stories where the airbag actually injured the driver more than if it didn't deploy. One guy got his nose broke by it.

IMHO I only got hurt because our seat belt doesn't ride high enought on our shoulder...................mines comes across the "ball" of my shoulder instead of over my collar bone........

It pulled my arm out of socket...........

The airbag was a huge topic of discussion...........

The "explaination" I received was; "You were nose diving and slid under his rear bumper that was elevated to him too slamming on his brakes."

"Due to this, there was no bumper to bumper contact and the imapct was lessoned."

"Also consider that you were on your brakes versus as a full momentum crash."

But who knows?????

Lee, a friend of mine and his brother were driving his brothers new 2500 Crew Cab Cummins pulling a 35' gooseneck cattle trailer, loaded with cattle, on a State Highway going 70 MPH. A Nissan pickup turned left directly in front of him, he never had a chance to hit the brakes and broadsided them at 70 MPH. Both occupants of the Nissan were killed. The airbags in the Dodge did not deploy, but neither occupant was seriously injured. His insurance company has launched a full blown investigation into this. I think maybe DCX has some problems with something in the airbag system.

Tires are Coopers.........wife and I love them; she wants to trade me her BFG KDWs.....

I have been praising these tires ever since we got them! Quiet, hard enough to last, but no REAL loss in performance.

I will buy Cooper again! They have re-invented themselves.......

Dragon - The front end swaps right over.............my front end came off a TOTALED 300C that was here in Houston.........the tuffest part right now is to get the HIDs to stop flickering.

The HIDs make this VERY VERY expensive; halogen is the easiest. If you were to do the stock swap using NEW parts, adding HIDs add $2400+ to this.

Next expensive step was color matching..........

The grill is NOT my first choice BUT I already bought it and so I will use those funds for performance!

I have my friend telling the wrecking yards if a 300 in Korea gets smashed in the back side to let me know..
