View Full Version : Why cant I break 100MPH?

Well I just came back from the E-Town meet this past weekend and had a blast.
For some reason when I do the 1/4 mile runs I cannot break 100MPH.
I always get 99.60 or 99.40, always 99 something, but never 100MPH.
Meanwhile alot of other members broke the 100MPH some with mods and some without mods.

When I went to the meet back in April, I also couldnt get to 100MPH. Basically everytime I went to the track I could not get to 100MPH.
Is something wrong with my top end or something?
What can I do to achieve this other than adding mods, maybe adjusting something now.

I have a CAI, Exhaust, and Superchip, and everytime I raced I did a different Superchip setting.

Just so you guys know, a while back I made a thread about my exhaust letting out more air from one exhaust then the other and its still doing that and I do not know why.
When i look at my exhaust I see the air coming out of the left one and not the right one, but the right one lets out air, but almost nothing at all.

Can this have anything to do with my track times?

You didn't say your ETs, but 100 mph is good for a 4300 lb car on street tires. You say exhaust, but do you have headers and hi-flow cats? Synthetic oil? A shot of juice would make a big difference, but so would a cam and head swap. Go out and spank a few Mustangs and you'll feel a lot better.:)

Why cant I break 100MPH?
You need another 20-30 horsepower is all - torque is quick, horsepower is fast.
The very same reason I'm stuck at 98 mph and change. I got my 13 seond run in (13.999) and with good air I figure I can repeat that pretty regularly, but I lack just <that> much hp to break 100...just like you..

Like Formerice said - kick a few Mustang GT's around and it's all good...

ye, but there were stock 300's that broke 100MPH.
I Did 13.86 at 99.40 and 13.86 at 99.60 or something like that.
Im gonna get my leak checked out this weekend and when I go back to the track on Nov 5, I will see what it does.

Do you have a TSTAT/fan mod?

Best bang for the buck there is.

No i dont, but I saw BklynMag have the 180 T-stat which was a couple wires, but I have yet to look into on how to do it.
I forgot, but the 180 T-stat is the relay in the fuse box with a couple wires and a toggle switch right?

The 180 tstat is a replacement Thermostat for your stock one.

You're thinking of the fan mod..

Thats it, the Fan Mod.
The T-Stat goes in the hose right?
Where can I obtain that?

The 25-cent Fan Mod is effective and works great @ the track.

Heres the link to that.

And here is the link to Jim Turners Fan Mod. I use the high end mod W/my own added dual fan control option W/ESP delete.

I got the t-stat and I broke 100mph Saturday. I pulled a 13.90.

It could be also aerodynamics or tire sizes. Has anyone chimed in on that side about it? I got the daytona wing and chin spoiler. Im think maybe that might have something to do with it.

Secondly what were your tire pressures?

Well with both my old contis and the new 20" I couldnt break it.
My tire pressure is about 30 PSI.

Ok im running with 18's, thats the problem. too much distance for your tire to turn.

Pump the fronts up to max pressure(around 50psi)and drop the rears to 26-28 psi.

He's getting great times Erik.

I agree with the pumping the fronts up, I had mine @ 55 psi, but as long as he is getting a good launch @ 30 PSI in the rear, I would leave it be.

Letting the air out will not improve and could hurt his top end.

Just MO.

FYI, All I did for the mag to run 13.87 @ 100.15:

-Removed resonators (probably shaved 50 lbs!) Car weighed in at 4162 without me on E-Town scale.
-Added drop in K&N type air filter
-Superchips 91 performance tune
-180 T-Stat
-Fan Mod
-Left the spare tire and jack @ home

Im gonna get my leak checked out this weekend and when I go back to the track on Nov 5, I will see what it does.

I think that tire pressure is all you need to get a few MPH @ the big end.

Friday night I was running 35 psi front/28 psi rear and I was running 13.5s @ 101 MPH.

Saturday I aired my front tires up to 55 PSI/ and raised the drag radials to 32 psi. That dropped my ETs by 1/10 and raised my MPH by nearly 2 MPH.

I did a few other things, but the tire pressure was the biggest factor I think.

Leave your rear tires as is, you are getting great ETs. Only lower the rear tire pressure to less than 30 psi if you are having a hard time launching without excessivbe wheel spin. Do not go below 26 psi. Just pump up the fronts to 50-55 psi. Hard tire = less rolling resistance.

Make sure you lower the fronts and pump up the rears to 35 psi or whatever your normal road pressure is.

Add a 383-170 tstat & fan mod and you should be flirting W/13.7s @ 102 MPH.

Sounds good.
Im gonna get my Fan mod done soon and try and get the tstat soon also and go to the shop on Sat of this week and check on the leak from my exhaust.
Now I cant wait til Nov 5th to adjust my tire pressure.
When I got my rims balanced the guy put nitrogen air instead of regular air.

Well there's nothing wrong W/nitrogen, but air is mostly nitrogen anyway.

Stay with the 30 psi in the rear. If you nhave trouble launching drop back 2 psi @ a time till you "hook".

I had that problem also, then I took a couple of weekends and put in the Zex kit. Now 14's and those damn 99.5's are a thing of the past, and next spring I might be able to get into the 12's and the 110's..

Tire spin. Also have you taken out all the weight you possibly can? Jack, spare, everything? If you can get some weight out I think you'll hit it. I got 102 mph in the 1/4 with a stock 350hp R/T, just started dumping weight and driving style.

Yup.
I dumped my jack, spare and even my tool to take off my rims.

How much gas are you carrying? In my auto-crossing days, I made sure I went to the event with no more than a quarter-tank. That, in addition to all the stuff mentioned so far (there were no fan mods, or other computer-foolery then), just seat-of-the-pants and some tire-pressure experimentation, as well as taking out all the weight that could be spared.

Bringing back an oldie, but i'm having the same issue here,I can't for the love of god get in the 13s,or break 100,i did hit 100.48 a few times b4 the SC,never since.I have the Airhammer 180T-Stat,Exhaust,even dynoed at 310RWH,which i think should be getting high 13s and consistantly 99-100-101,but it aint happening,i tried my tire pressure at 28 in the rear, but i didn't raise the front.I have seen other Daytonas and RTs get 13.7 but i can't,i have really thought about trading it in,thinking i got me a Slowpar.Any other tips?

I'll throw something in that I heard bits and pieces about. Does the vehicle track straight and is the steering wheel centered when going straight??? My shop foreman mentioned a long time ago when he went to an ABS update school (which my failed Dodge dealer didn't send me to) that they mentioned LX's with reduced top speeds due to an alignment or steeering wheel centering issue. The off center wheel was causing the ESP to tell the PCM to reduce the power output causing reduced top speed. Just something to consider...

Thats very interesting, cause i do have an alignment issue front and rear nothing huge, but my wheel is slightly off center and my drivers side rear wheel sticks out a bit,i'm getting a 4 wheel alignment.I will definately update this as a cause or not after the alignment.

I asked a performance shop manager about this.
He said that since I didnt break 100 its because I had no wheel spin. He said that if I did have wheel spin I would break 100.
Sounds pretty logical to me.

Wonder if it could be a bad cat. I remember my cats went out on my Ram. I'd mash the gas and it'd barely go. But it was completly blocked. Don't the all stock exhaust have an "x" pipe though? So maybe something after the x pipe. Blocked muffler maybe?

I haven't seen anyone ask if you are staying on the gas until after the 2nd MPH lite (it's actually after the 1/4 mile marker) My son does this, it doesn't effect ET but makes his MPH lower by .3 or so. The speed at the end of the strip is an average over the distance between the MPH lites, one before the finish, one after. Just a thought, every little bit adds up!

I have the opposite problem, I've hot 101.09 but never broke into the 13's...I think my 20" SRT rims may have a bit to do with that.
FYI, before superchips I never got faster than 99, with superchips(Preformance 91, reduced TQ mgmt, stock shift points) I broke 100 3 of 4 runs

Count me in for the can't break 100MPH club and put me down for a big helping of can't get into the 13's. I do live in TX(hot and humid) and ofcourse I am learning alot from this thread. Keep the suggestions coming. So far I need a hand held tuner, exhaust, intake, N2O, 4 wheel alignment, remove my dash, stop eating, remove exerything but my underwear when I go to the track. I'm just kidding, this is good info. I hate losing to mustangs when they run 13s.
