Last night I experienced an issue I've never had before  . My oil light came on briefly, then went off. This happened again (on/off) when I went up and down a few hills. When I was pulling up my driveway, right next to the house where you can hear the car really well due to the echo, I heard the engine was making a clicking noise.

Popped the hood and checked the dipstick and it was low. It had been about 2,700 miles since the last change, so I added a quart (never had to do that between changes). I paid extra attention starting up today and heard a small geyser under the car . I located the source of the leak... loose oil filter. I tightened it up 4 full turns. Added another 3 quarts (judging from the slick on the driveway) and took it to the shop. The leak had stopped, but it was about time for another change, so I had it done.

The filter was a Purolator L14670. When removed, the gasket had separated from the filter. The tech showed me a 90 gallon can of various used filters, all of which had intact gaskets.

I can't say for sure what the cause of the leak was... maybe the filter was put on too loose, maybe it was defective. I can say for sure that I won't be letting them use Purolator filters anymore.

Souns like the filter was put on too tight, making the gasket go all blooey and wrinkled - and pulling it out of the rim.

I gotta agree with overtight!! That is the same filter I have used for a long time. I have seen filters leave their gasket on the block when pulled, this does some bad stuff if you miss it also. Who put it on?
