Has anyone tried the General Grabber UHP tires yet? In 255X55X18 size?

I kind of like the thread design, but wonder how they are in the real world.

Any comments????????

would rather you run a 255/50 instead.....

The 255/55 would look like an offroad vehical IMO

I have the grabber UHP 245/45 18 tires. They are the biggest CAR tires available. Why would you want TRUCK tires on a high performance car????????????????????????????????????????????

with 50 series, if your at stock height, your going to add to the already large wheel gap. I don't believe General makes these in any size other than 55 in an 18" rim. but what type of tire are you looking for, performance or durabilty, etc. I believe this particular tire is an SUV tire.

The BFG KDW 255/55/18 IS a Performance Tire!!

I was thinking about the same tire.

not much differance between the two in size. The General is .400 wider then the KDW

I highly recommend our Coopers.........

They have no road noise, they are V rated, and a 420 or 440 tread wear rating.

Someone else here said they had them too.......they liked them as well.

We got the 255/50/VR18

Thanks guys, the General Grabber I was looking at is NOT a truck tire, it is a high performance tire that is ZR rated.

I was going to get the B F G g-force KDW-NT, but the thread design does nothing for me.

I will have to check out the Coopers..............what is the model name?????

I still like the looks of the General's..........

Plenty of time to look around, won't need the tires until this winter......if we do have a "winter" here in Florida.........LOL

Almost 19K on my Conti's..........still have lot of thread left, yes, I do spin em'...........LOL

Hey Bob... They make the BFG KDW in a normal tread... it just doesn't come in the 255/55/18.

The "Grabber" series tires are truck tires. The one you are looking at weighs 35 pounds. The "Exclaim" series are high performance car tires, The 245/45 18s weigh 27 pounds, this is a huge difference in performance and response. The 245s are "short" and need the superchips to adjust the diameter if the speedometer will be correct.
To me the added 32 pounds of rotating mass is a performance and ride damping issue. If they fit your need, cool. They are truck tires.

After reading more about the General tires, I agree that it is not a good choice.

So far the B F Goodrich tire seems to be the one to buy.

I just snagged two 255/55 r18's conti 4x4 tires out of the junk tire pile at work. My plan is to put them on my extra wheels and pull fuse 17 and have just smoke em. I just want to confirm that they will work before I have one of the tech's at work stay late to help me mount them. They are a truck tire but they will only be on the car for burnouts. From what i've read I should be okay but if not please let me know.

There MUST be a video of it, but yeah, they should work fine for a smoke show. BE CAREFUL, if they hook up you may be in for a ride.

What a coincidence, I was looking at the tirerack and I was seriously thinking about buying the grabbers in 255/55-18, I already have goodyear 255/55-18 on the RT but they are pretty much dead.
I like the grabbers for the thread design good for evacuating water, and deep thread, plus can't beat the price.
On the negative side, you guys say they are heavy at 35 lb each, what would be considered an OK weight for the Mag?
The KDW weight 35 lb too, so what's the big deal?
Anything light in 255/55-18?

joseph

Hey "Florida RT" have you bought those grabbers yet, I wanna know how they ride, if they grip, and if they are noisy or ok, since they are considered truck tires. BTW, isn't the magnum an SUV according to the EPA?
I will get those tire (99% sure) in september when it's start raining, right now the wheater is still good and dry, so I'll wait a month or two.

Nope, Have not bought any tires yet, still waiting for my Conti's to wear out. Maybe later this year, have 20,000 miles on the originals, still have thread left.

The new 255/55 size GY GS-D3 that you alerted us to is listed at tirerack at 31 lb.

Which model GY 255/55 have you worn out?

Re: tire weight. Tires have a mix of characteristics and compromises. You get to pick the characteristics that you favor. So if you want to go for a small light tire like 245/45-18, that is 1.9 inches shorter than stock. Make sure you are okay with the additional gap in wheel-wells, lower ground clearance, and have a plan to deal with the resulting speedo error because that is beyond the stock adjustment range.

I have the Eagle LS2, they aren't worth a dime on water, I hit a puddle and I have no traction until the tires dry out, I don't know if they sucked new or if it's because there is not much life left in them. they're 255/55-18.
I want the GS-D3, but I can't afford them, I need something in the low $100. I wanted the KDW2, they're great for the price, but they are a real hazard if driven in light snow or light ice conditions, and since I can't afford 2 sets of 4 tires, I'm leaning toward the grabbers, they're a good compromise in price, aggresive tread, light snow capable, I just hope they won't be noisy.

Scott

PaulFix runs the Gen Grabbers. He says they are "maybe a little noisy". http://www.lxforums.com/board/showpost.php?p=433424&postcount=23

Tirerack's rating shows the Grabbers quieter than the KDW2's, which some people find noisy.

Would you notice tire noise with blastin' bob's exhaust?

Thanks for the warning on the GY Eagles, I hate tires that don't perform well on wet roads.

joseph
08-26-2006, 06:16 AM
I didn't even know tirerack had a rating on tire noise.

joseph
08-26-2006, 03:27 PM
Check this comparison:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/CompareTires.jsp?resultsNumberSelected=Y&displayResults=10&compare=true&compareList=17&RunFlat=All&goWhere=%252Ftires%252FCompare1.jsp&width=255%2F&ratio=55&diameter=18&startIndex=10&sortValue=1

The LS2 suck just as I experienced, look at the bad ratings they get (max load is low too), KDW2 is not as good as I hoped, I am disappointed in the noise rating and they weigh 35lb., GSD3 are the best and they weigh 31lb., grabber is real good overall, grip is good, price is good, they weigh the same as the KDW2 so it's not that bad, noise rating is good, and the have the highest speed rating.
I'll get the grabbers for sure in a month or two, I'll post my evaluation.

joseph

I ordered the tires, but I couldn't get them because my credit for them from tirerack was declined, so, I'll buy 2 for the rear in 3-4 weeks and the other 2 a month later or so.

How about the Rodian HP (only 22lbs), are they good, I found them here for $82 and shipping is real good.

They also are very light, only 22 pounds, that's quite amazing considering that the UHP, KDW2 and GSD3 weight about 32-35 lb each, 22 pound 255/55-18 tires must reduce mass and reduce braking, what do you think?

i know they are a bit pricey but the correct tire size to run and still be the same overall diameter as the stock 225 60 18 is a 245 55 18 and the only one we have found and sell a lot of is the BFG KDWS. its a true car tire, its considered and ultra high performance all season tire and is Z rated with a 400 tread ware a traction rating of A and a temp. rating a A. I still have not figured out why so many of you are running the big 255 55 18s. i guess mainly because they are so many to choose from and they are relatively inexpensive compared to the 245 55 18s. but to me a big truck tire on a high performance car just goes against the grain a bit too much. hopefully this helps. good luck everyone.

I have the UHP grabbers on my summer rims, they are a little noisy ( tire rumble) but give great grip, slow wear and look great. They where also a super deal.

I probably would not get them again but that decision is a couple of years off yet.

MikeEast

I don't remember if they make the BFG KDW2's in 245 or not, but I went for the 255/55-18's because I like a little sidewall on my tires. That's the first part of the suspension and I really don't like how the little short sidewall tires ride. Plus they do not protect the rims either.

I have about 12,000 hard miles on them now and see no appreciable signs of wear. If you run 'normal' tire pressures they are indeed a noisy tire, I run 40psi and they are a lot quieter that way. Still a little rumble at a few low speeds but nothing to write home about.

I'll probably buy another set when I go through these...

Mike

Why would you go 245 if 255 is the max that will fit, if I'm gonna buy new tires, I'll get the widest ones possible that will fit my rims without rubbing and 255 fill in the wells better too.
I wish I could put 275 rear without any mods:wink:

I have the General Grabber UHP 255/55's waiting to be installed.
I don't care if there called truck tires (street/sport) . Which, as far as I can tell only has to do with the size.
They have a ZR speed rating and they have a better UTQG rating than the KDW2 tires (Which are ultra high performance car tires).

joseph
02-12-2007, 04:20 AM
Plus, our magnums are classified are SUV's:wink:
Anyway, when you think about it, what matters is the speed rating, load rating and most importantly, the weight of the tire, so wether they are for cars or SUV's doesn't matter that much if the numbers are good, plus our cars are heavy, so I would feel better knowing I have strong tires that can take the load.
Furthermore, nowadays, SUV's are driven like cars, hard and fast with no need for off road capability, so many SUV tires are designed for performance and comfort, as opposed to 10-20 years ago, when they were desiged for off roading.

You can call the BFG KDW2 or aka KDW-NT a truck tire if you wish. My personal experience compared to the OEM 225-60-18 Conti's is night and day. The BFG's are far superior on wet roads and my cornering force running 36 psi has increased to the point where I now consider fatter sway bars to be required as my next mod. I used to be able to make the ESP light flash regularly with hard driving on the Contis on dry roads. I have to drive the same speeds on the same corners to get ESP to even "blink" at me in the pouring rain with the BFGs.

That "big truck" tire is 28.50 in diameter, what is it stock already?

HP car, are you kidding yourself, last time I checked, a 4200lb car was not considered a HP car, it's not a porshe.

I just got the Grabber UHP 255/55/18 on my maggie. So far i love them. They create such a smooth ride, especially at high speeds. Hell I hardly notice any difference when driving 100+.

They are nice and meaty. I love the strength of the sidewalls - corners like a dream without the stress and pull you feel on the sides.

Initial Impressions is that these are bad ass cheap tires. Just have to wait until I get some real mileage on them
