View Full Version : Brake rotors shot at 25K! EBC replacements.

Well my brakes, like so many others here, are shot at 25K miles. The rotors are warped badly and I didn't want to replace them with the same crappy ones or even get into a warranty battle with the stealership.
I ordered the EBC rotors and pads and will see if these hold up any better. If anything I hope they will have better stopping power. I never did like the feel of the stock brakes even from brand new.
So, once I get my car back, I'll do the install. Oh yeah, did I mention my torque converter failed. Warrantied work, but huge pain in the A$$.

Hmm, mine at 30K seem fine. I need to look closely when I rotate.

They look good, is that a black coating on them or just the photo?

You may not need to fight. My dealer replaced my rear pads & rotors for free without any problems. I bought the car (used) from them 2 months earlier with 44k on it & I already put another 8k on the car. They were the ones who offered to do it for free.

Its a black protective coating. I actually got my car back yesterday shortly after posting this thread. I was able to get the brakes changed in about 2 hours. Here's pics of the mounted. The coating has already worn off and the black still remains in the dimples and grooves. It looks pretty cool.

Mine also warped at about 12K miles. The warranty covers the rotors up to 12K.

Be careful with those redstuff pads... they are rather agressive.. and might possibly just warp your new rotors right away.....

Thanks for the warning. There's a big warning card that comes with the brakes to take it easy on them for 300-400 miles. No hard braking.

Thanks for the compliment. Everything ran about $500.00. Yeah, ss lines would be nice, do you know of any kits available for the LX cars yet?
Here's a photo of the rotor after the coating has worn off.

Zeckhausen.com has one. I would first check with supporting vendor Todd at tceperformanceproducts.com and see if he can sell you what you need. Give him a call. I got my replacement big brake kit from him and saved a bundle over the other alternatives.

Are those rotors drilled all the way through? I had warping problems twice within 15k on our RT. First time I resurfaced them, second time I replaced them with Centrix high performance rotors, they look like these but the drilled holes are drilled all the way through. That should give better cooling than not clear through. The slots on the centrix looks just iike these, and they are not slotted clear through.
I paid $125 each for the front rotors. Have not had any problems with the rears yet, but will replace those rotors with the Centrix when needed. Just got back from a 3500k road trip with the new rotors and love em. The braking feels great, they do not shake at all, and a lot of the driving on the trip was winding roads (took that route on purpose!). :thumbs_u: :racing:
$500 is a good price for front and rear rotors and pads though. Wondering if they are drilled completely through

Humm I am getting an od little shimmy from mine at 20k :(
If I end up having to eat mine, I may, just MAYBE get a BBK maybe some 15" units for the front ?? :)

When I was looking into what to do for my big brake kit I asked around and got an earful from some guys I know who do SCCA class racing. They freaked when they heard "slotted rotors". Drilling all the way thru promotes rotor cracking, so I didn't want to go that route already. Slotting, while it does improve the bite incrementally, also decreases the surface area you are braking against (so does drilling). I asked Todd at TCE Performance what he thought and,for my type of use, and he felt it wouldn't make any sort of meaningful difference, plus it would increase brake dust. So my rotors are neither drilled nor slotted.
Just some food for thought.
Rob you dog... You're eyeing those big StopTechs or are you planning something different?

I've had mine on for about 4000 miles now - they seem to work well enough, and I'm happy with them. Took me a while to get used to the added noise of drilled/slotted rotors though ... again most of that was during breakin. But since I've added the Bassani exhaust and powered sub, the breaks suddenly got very quiet!

Are those rotors drilled all the way through? No, they aren't. The 'holes' are more like big dimples. Nor to the slots go all the way. EBC did this to promote cooling without sacrificing rotor strength. (Or so their marketing deptartment says )

Matt - Depends :) If the stockers are warped, I woudl be tempted to step up to a BBK from StopTech its just insane the $$ those are going for though. I am trying to pack $$$ away for a crate motor and a Kenne Bell :)
I am without my car for the next day or two as the dealer works through the list of stuff...

Yeah but its a 15" rotor, man. You have to expect to pay out the wazoo for that. I'm thinking of bumping up my pads. I get good performance from the conservative pad setup Tood hooked me up with -- I *can* see some fine dust if I've been leaning into them on the fronts -- but I'm willing to step up and see what some serious stopping pads can do for me. I have to get the rears re-bled (a slightly fubar'd procdure left some air bubbles in we think, so I have some pedal shudder) and when I get that squared up I will maybe change out the pads.
And then next month new tires go on. My Toyo's are fine for another 6 months of city driving but no way would they survive a gonzo track day.

Well if you honestly think about it, there is no reason a 15" rotor shoudl be that much more than a 13 or 14. There isnt super secret ways to make them any differnt, they are cast chunks of steel with some other steps thrown in ( I am guessing proper gas pressure and treating etc )
Same goes with the Calipers, just a little bigger product so material cost.
Its a bling thing and a racing thing more than a actuall cost differance IMHO but hey they will fill out the wheel openings ;) That has to be worth at last $2k
Hehehe

How is the feel and stopping power of EBC's rotors and pads?
Is the slotted and dippled design suitable for ice and snow conditions as the smooth stock design?
Thanks in advance,
Scott
