View Full Version : @#!%^$ F1's in the Rain...

Whoo Hoo, got my F1's back on, I've been driving on the RSA's and I figured with the warm weather I should put some wear on the F1's instead.

I have a home office and try to avoid rush hour traffic, because some people, seriously, freak out and drive like idiots, thinking they'll get somewhere faster if they cut off a few people and weave through traffic.

So as I'm leaving home, I say to Mrs. Jaak, "Well here I go, off in to heavy traffic, my favourite time for idiot drivers!"

I get about a mile away, where I have to get on to a major highway. I'm lined up with about 6 other cars, in the right lane, to get on. What happens? Three other cars dart over into the spaces between, causing the cars in front of me to slam on the brakes just as I start accelerating towards the ramp for the highway. Quick, off the gas, on the brakes, closing fast and I feel the ABS kicking in, in the rain, where the RSAs never would have slid... Just kissed the bumper of a 1984 Caddie. Rubbed some of the dirt off it.

But now, I have an SRT front bumper, cracked at the crosshairs in the middle, the bottom and the drivers side.

Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap...

I'm not so sure the F1's are that great for day to day reality.... (They're noisier than the RSAs as well...)

Looks like this set, will be my last set... Those run flat Michelins at the track stuck like glue in the rain!

So... Time to get a quote from my buds at Eastway. Sigh...

My baby's been banged and I've got the blues...

:doh:the good news is you didn't run down the loosers and go off in a fit of road rage... I know you wanted to... glad to see you kept your cool.

On the bright side... It's an opportunity for a MOD! Maybe another Chargum or a 300 front cap? :thumbs_u:

I'm sorry Jaak.

Hope she feels better soon!

Have you thought of putting a standard Mag front end on? You'd be quite the trend setter... I don't think its been done! You could PULL into a parking space!

J/K sorry, gallows humor!

With the amount of rain we had this mornin I doubt the RSA's would have helped much. Sorry to hear Jim, Maybe it's time for a SRT front end.... Oh wait.

Oh my friend, I feel for ya. Frustrating, damn frustrating on soooo many levels. Damn tires, time of day and the idiot drivers to be sure. And it's your baby too. Don't know what I can to do help but if you want to bring it over, put her on the lift and take the bottom shield off to check for inside damage you are welcome any time.

Any insurance woes from the other driver to boot?

SRT8 Front End Swap!

Oh, wait.

Yeah, the F1's do SUCK in the rain. I had no issues in the snow during the winter, but when it rains I get very poor traction. Even with ESP on I spin the tires off of every red light and I'm barely on the gas at all.

The Conti's on my old RT had better traction, and tread lasted longer as well.

Thanks Brother, I'd appreciate that... (We just have to figure out when! Got some time Sunday?) I'd be surprised if the other driver comes looking for anything insurance wise. We couldn't even find the damage to her car. Plus she had a big scrape on the side of the bumper from something else, and seems like a very reasonable and nice person. Not even any small transfer of paint, either way. (Must be the great wax job I did!)

Front end swaps? Thanks you guys, you had me laughing!!!!

Road rage? Didn't even occur to me. It was more a case of being bummed because I had just put those tires on and if I had any idea they'd do that to me, I would have given myself extra space. I sure as heck did, after! My confidence in the F1's was so shaken in the rain after that, I was driving in the slow lane, slower than most of the traffic. And then went in to an empty parking lot to see what they were like. Definately not as good as the RSAs.

Bandit, thanks for confirming, I really appreciate it. I couldn't help but question if it was true, when it first happened, or if it was something I did (or didn't do).

So the SXT front end is on order and I'll be changing the rear tag as well and putting in 300 SRT headrests to get rid of the SRT logos so the whole car looks like it has a small engine. Oh and the Brembos are coming off. NOT!!!!

But I think I will hang the damaged one on my wall in the garage. Maybe one day, I'll do something custom with it... In the meantime, there goes some mod money out as repair money.

Oh great, I just looked at my sig... Now there should be cracks in it, just down the sides of the center part below the RAM logo and on the drivers side where the bar connects next to the headlight.

Now I know how Done felt! Similar thing happened to him on the way to Montreal!

I feel for you jaak.

SXT front end, no way. Loose the fog lights and go SE brother, now that's stealth. You're also going to have to do something about one of those exhaust pipes.

If you need a hand with the nose swap, I've had mine off and on a couple of times and I'm getting really good at it, if I do say so myself.

Keep yer chin up.

I'm sure you'll have your baby back to new in no time.

I have the 20" F-1's on my 300C I haven't noticed any issues in the rain, but then again I drive like an old lady if I have to take my girl out in any kind of weather.

All I can say is roll with it and make it even better than it was before!

By "track", do you refer to drag or road course? How are the RSA's for cornering?

thanks in advance,
Scott

Mine will be out of the shop tomorrow. Insurance estimate was $1,850. Had some other things done while it was there. Pictures when I get it back.

I think a sleeper SRT that looks like an RT would be really cool. Slap an eventual turbo in that thing and rock the blocks off some unwitting saps ;?)

Yeah, but no.... I love that nose!

Well fortunately for me, my damage isn't as severe as Don's and my favourite dealer knows how to take care of me, so it's going to cost me less than I expected.

So I've asked for them to order the part and paint 'er up! (Sorry Ernie, but that freakin' border is a pain.) Besides, Eastway ALWAYS treats me well.

I won't be tossing the old one. Looks like a good candidate for some play time!

According to hemiwagn, red is 20 hp more, so at WOT it might pull away from your hood and fenders... I don't know if just painting it over, would fix that!

I look at things like, MagFX's grill as well as looking at Shelby Cobras and I get funny ideas in my head!

Hmmm... is that a cold air intake hole on the aluminum plate on the side of the rad? Hmmm...

I know a guy that could make me anything I want for that, so it gives me something to get creative with...

i just *knew* 20hp extra was a bad thing -- bad for heavy traffic on rainy days....

Never would have happened if it was black... LOL!

The funny thing? I email Adam at Eastway and the same thing happened to him, but he had an inch to spare.

I could have used that spare inch. Might have made a big difference!

Weird - the RSAs are rated much better in M&S than F1s, but Goodyear actually rates them as having poorer performance in the rain. But your real-world experience means a lot more than their "specs".

The F1's work well when warm, but I wonder if the water was cooling them a bit... I'm going to take a look at that stretch of road again in the dry and see what it looks like. That's interesting that they're rated better for rain! And yes, if it was an R/T I may have been ok!
