Installing 80w Xenon Super White Headlamps

Here's an easy mod that makes a great difference.....
Time: 10 to 20 min
Tools: adj wrench
Difficulty: Novice

I originally switched my stock Magnum low beams for the hyper white type found at Kragen for $30/pair. Although they were brighter, they left me feeling like I still wanted more.

I checked the knowledge base & found this link from Meister recommending 80w Xenon Super Whites for that HID-like appearance. (Found here: http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php?t=24636&highlight=headlamp) So I ordered the 80w low beams (9006) & 100w fog lamp (9005. although I will post fog lamp replacement on separate thread.) from autolumination as suggested by above post at this link: http://autolumination.com/194.htm

So I ordered these at $11.99/pair:

1st: open hood & remove the air filter. (in this case removed Airaid CAI):

loosen hose clamp & remove air intake tube & small hose to valve cover:

remove the filter assembly:

using your wrench remove the screw holding the bottom air box. remove air box:

now with the filter assembly removed, locate the tab that holds the coolant reservior in place.

push tab to one side & the reservior easily lifts up & out:

now locate low beam lamp on driver's side:

making sure not to touch bulb with skin, (I used clean cotton gloves) turn the bulb 1/4 turn counter clockwise to release:

gently pull back saftey clip & wiggle the bulb loose:

install your Super White just as you removed the original:

re-install your reservior & airbox & driver's side is done. The passenger side bulb is easily accessible However, re-installing new bulb is tricky as the wiring alows very little slack & fender wall provides little room:

Make sure you seat the lights correctly, (connection should be straight up & down) to ensure correct alignment of beam.

Picture does no justice! Beam has crisp, clean HID-like look (VERY slight blue hue):

I am extremely happy with the new look & considering the price I'm a winner twice over!

I recently switched out all my front lights for Sylvania Silverstars (the only bright light to trust IMO). Anyway, it does make a huge different in front end appearance (especially when you get the SilverStars for turn signals = clear)and how well you can see at night.

I guess I have small hands- I didn't remove my Airraid. I just unclipped the power steering res and moved it over. Still made for a pain in the butt- but it got done.

Great write up! My only concern is when I see a bulb with that dark of a tint on it, how much light energy is lost to it. Yes, they look "whiter", but only because it's subtracting light to make it look more blue...

Thanx guys! The post from Meister in which he recommended these lights indicates he had been running lights for quite sometime with no heat problems. However if your still anxious about it, Autolumination offers these in stock wattage as well. As far as losing light due to blueish hue, I am aware this does occur, but then again, these are more powerful than stock bulbs & now that my Fog Lamps are completed as well I drive with all four lights ablaze & now the road is more visible than any car I've owned before. Besides, to me this mod is more for form than function. Just remeber, when it comes down to Brass Tax, it's all about your own personal preference & how you want your LX set up!

Want real brighter bulbs with the same wattage, use HIR bulbs, one seller on e-bay (search HIR bulbs)
I just got my 9012's a few days ago to replace my 9006.
Also, fog lghts can be replaced with 9005 (just have to cut the tabs to fit them) which is what I'll do soon too.

If I were you I'd go to www.danielsternlighting.com (http://www.danielsternlighting.com) and read about those XENON/Silverstar/Blue lensed bulbs. It's a real eye opener. Set some time aside to read the articles because there are more than just one.
