View Full Version : Water in wheels causing imbalance

I've never notice this problem before, because I haven't driven for long distances before in rainy weather with my new wheels. But, I ran into this problem coming back from the SoCal meet, driving in nonstop rain.
My wheels have a ridge on both the front and back side, leaving a valley in the middle. When washing the car, I have always had to dry this area out. But, I've now found out that when driving in the rain, the water collects in this valley to the point that I get a very serious vibration from the wheels becoming out of balance. It seems to take about 20 to 30 miles of driving in the rain for this to happen. When it does, I have to pull over to the side of the road to let the water drain. Then I'm good for another 20 to 30 miles.
I remember a long time ago someone posted something about this problem with their wheels. It didn't mean much to me at the time, as I didn't have these wheels then. I don't recall ever seeing anything about someone having a fix for this.
Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know of something that can be put on the wheel to redirect the water out of the wheel?

I experience the same thing with my 05 AWD. My 20s collect water in the valley in the center of the wheel. The first time it happened in a heavy rainfall. Thought I lost a wheel weight, but finally figured it out. Don't have a clue on a fix.

It looks like we're the only 2 with this problem. Guess I'm going to have to bug the manufacturer about this!
I thought the same thing (about losing a weight) when it first happened. The light came on (in my head) when the person I was traveling with commented about a gush of water coming from my wheels when I stopped.

What type of rims do you have?

Yeah... I already thought of that. I didn't want to have to drill the hole all the way through the tire though!

I experienced that this morning for the first time, but it was road dirt that settled on the wet rim last night and froze, luckily the wheel threw it after a few miles but before that I thought the car was going to shake itself apart.

What? You didn't have your car locked in the garage with the cover on it during the wet weather?

Just place some kind of ribs on the inside of the rim that push the water to the inside of the rim and back onto the road. (inside-spiralies lol) :)

Actually, if I don't hear from someone about something that works, that's what I have in mind. I'm thinking light plastic fins of some sort. I think I can conceal them pretty well, but it would probably make cleaning the wheels an even bigger chore!

So that's why it took me 17 hours to get home from San Francisco. We had to stop every 20 to 30 miles, to drain your wheels!
The plastic fin idea is a good one Maggie. I'd say only one per wheel would do it.

That was because I had to slow down so you could keep up with me on those twisty mountain roads. No... wait... I had to slow down because my wife was screaming "SLOW DOWN"!

ummm... you could just run 3 fat beads of silicone spirals and this would sweep out the water as well.

What? You didn't have your car locked in the garage with the cover on it during the wet weather?Smart A$$!No it wasn't locked in the garage, and noticed a new twist on this when I washed her today. On the AR RTS 311's the spokes protrude over the lip a bit,and road dirt collects under the spokes, and knocks the balance totally out of wack. While the car was dirty I got shake from 55 to 80.The car is now clean again, and I paid special attention to the wheels, front and back and I have no vibration at all.Wierd,I never saw a little dirt have that much of an effect!

That would be worth a try. Easy to replace if it comes off during repeated washings too.

I have never experinced this issue with the stock AWD wheels... But I did have the vibration upon breaking... due to the warped rotor problem... Had em replaced and everything is as right as rain... LOL
