Well, I have to say that since getting my Mag, I've been bitten pretty hard by the performance bug. I'm sure a few of you here can relate... :)

I've been watching all the performance threads with a lot of interest and thought long and hard about modding up my R/T, but came to the conclusion that isn't what I really want. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Mag, but I want something that's crazy fast right outta the box, no mods. So I thought about trading up to an SRT, test drove the 300 and Mag SRTs and LOVED them too, but in the end, I couldn't make the cost/trade-in ratio work, nor could I handle buying one outright, so....time to look around for some serious speed, and this is what I came up with...an '03 Z06. There's a glut of them out there right now, so it was reasonably priced. And I dare say it meets my "need for speed" quite nicely, right out of the box. :)

why settle for a 2003 Z06? get the 2006 Z06 with the 427 505 Hp.

You could probably fit one of those in the back of the Mag right? ;-)

Too rich for my blood...but the used ones are plentiful out there right now, so you can swing a good deal on them.

It used to be that we had a Toyota as a daily driver and the Mag was the second, fun car. Well, we traded the Toyota in on the Z, moved the Mag into the daily driver slot, and the Z is now the second, fun car. Just a little creative shuffling, it's like a card trick lol

Ok this is understandable because the SRT's are pretty pricey dependig on where you go.

Now I have to ask the same above question. and Add
What was the asking price on the SRT's in comparison to the Z06?

Well, the C5 was built from 97 to 04, and prices range accordingly. But it wouldn't be too hard to find one in good shape for mid $20k's.Comparing that to the 2006 Z sticker of $65k+, I'd call that reasonable. The one I got was a garage queen with 13k miles, and an original sticker of about $52k. Interestingly, the Z is usually cheaper than a comparable vert. From word on the street, the glut of Z's is because the owners are scrambling to get an 06. The thinking being (and I don't know if this is true or not) that the 05/06 coupe or vert is faster than a pre-05 Z. Go figure.

20k is certainly reasonable...My brother just picked up a 2005 C5 Covert. for triple that

I was only curious, would be a nice pair...Mag and Vette

Edit: Sorry, I had an extra "s" in the link. It should be ok now.

For those interested in prices, check out www.corvetteforum.com (http://www.corvetteforum.com), and look inside the "c5s For Sale/Wanted" on the left side of the page. Lotsa goodies.

Another thing I liked about this is a lot of them are stock, still have warranty, and in some cases you can extend it. And for me, the Z is plenty fast, so I'm not gonna mod it and don't have that hanging over my head if warranty work is needed.

I sold a New SRT-8 Magnum with everything but NAV for 36K........

Problem with the Vett is that is Cost big bucks to do performance mods because the stock engines have way to high of compression ratios to even advance the Timing.

You could get an 02 Viper RT-10 or GTS and not only be faster than the Vet, you will have more performance potential, and look MUCH BETTER.

Problem with the Vett now is publix respect and interest, they are really the most “has been” race car for a while…

Also, you could always get a nice camaro with an LS1 and Be faster with Mods and pay a lot less.

Who knows why you would buy a Magnum if a Corvette is a possible satisfactory car for you.

Nice pickup AutoMag! I've been shooping the C6's and just can't seem to get over the sticker shock. The '06 Roush Stage 3 'Stangs are just starting to come out as well and are tempting me, especially a triple black vert at 6-7K less than the 'Vette.

So many cars, so little time, and a seriously depleted bank account to boot. It's fun lookin' though. Good luck with the car!

MG42pillbox:

I wasn't looking to mod the Vette. This was a birthday present to my wife, so I wanted something that was bone-stock, but still fast enough for those times when I get to drive it (wink wink!). In my opinion, this is the Very Best Kind of birthday present, one that *I* get to use lol

The 02 Viper has an Edmunds price of about $50k, which is a lot more than I paid for the Vette. Nor do I feel the need to be the fastest on the block. Besides, my wife would look silly driving a Viper lol

As far as what you say is public opinion of the Corvette, well, I'm thinking that's your opinion of them. :) Personally, I think they are an awesome car.

The Camaro, while a nice car, didn't fit the bill.

As to why I bought the Magnum; why not? It's a great family car.

StarJack:

Thanks, and yeah, the sticker on the C6 is what drove me to the used Vette market, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the glut. For once, depreciation worked for me, not against me!

Nice cars, them 'Stangs. Good luck with your search!
