View Full Version : What are your Challenger plans?

I have a few things I am considering when & if the Challenger sees the light of day.
I spoke with my dealer and like everyone else, they have no idea if it will make it from concept to production... but they were nice enough to put me down for the 1st one that is due to them. So I know I am getting one.
In the meantime I have a few decisions to make, and I'd love to hear your thoughts, and see what you'll do in the same situaion.
1) I am considering keeping my Magnum SRT-8 because the practicality of a 4 door wagon is what drew me to it in the first place. The Challenger will be a toy while the Maggy is the daily driver.
2) Do I then take the time and modify the hell out of the SRT (supercharger, etc) since I'll have the Challenger to drive while it's out? Or should I keep the go-fast focus on the Challenger? I suppose this will be determined by what powerplant we see in the Challenger.
3) Do I grab the Challenger R/T or do I sit back and wait to see if they make a SRT version? I hate the thought of sitting by and watching others driving around in the new Challenger and not being able to join in, but I also hate the thought of being impatient and then 5 months after I buy the R/T, the SRT is released.
4) Am I the only one who is NOT excited about the manual transmission being proposed? It is common knowledge that if built right an auto can be as fast or faster than a manual. I live in a fairly high-traffic area and I get tired of shifting needlessly in heavy traffic. If the auto is as performance oriented I will want the auto for sure.
5) What colors do you think will be available, and what would you buy? I am a black car kind of person, but when I see the classic orange my heart skips a beat. I think I'll have to go orange for sure.

I'm going to wait at least until the first refresh of the car (2nd to 3rd year I'll bet) because I think the options will be sorted, a more powerful combo will be available and the bugs should be at least moderateley worked out. The manual trans is the only way to go for me. I'm in the same boat as to what I'll do with my Magnum.

Well right now i'm not entirely sure, original it was wait at least till I have my Magnum fully payed off (a little over 3 years) then get one, however with the current rumor that it will be released only as an SRT-8 with a manual I wouldn't be getting one as it would have to come with an auto for me to buy it, and if they did eventualy come out with an R/T version with the 5.7 and an auto i'm not sure, performance would be around the same as the Magnum so i'd be tossed up between the better looks of the challenger vs the utility of the Magnum and at that point the fact of no car payments with the Magnum in a little over 3 years.

Assuming that they build it, and that it will follow the same basic production schedules as the other LX's (SRT trim level ~9 months after launch), I intend on waiting for the SRT version of the Challenger. Though I don't regret not waiting for the Magnum SRT8 'cause we were looking for AWD anyway, the Challenger will be "Dad's toy" and will not be so bound by practicality...

Dealer told me the Challenger will be built on the same platform as the LX's, I was concerned about a it being smaller like the Camaro looks. I likes the bigger cars.
Going back next week and hope to talk to the salesman again and get more information. If its only available in a manual then I either have to take my name off the list or learn how to drive one.

If it goes to production it will actually be built on a new 'LY' platform (an LX variant with shorter wheelbase, IIRC). Still a big car though - significantly bigger (and heavier) than the Camaro concept. And for what it's worth, though we're all hoping for a true manual trans offering, IMO I can't imagine it being offered with a manual only...

Here is a different thought.
I hope to find a 1972 challenger (my first car) restore it to modern specs.
Hemi 5.7 LHS leather (IN my intrepid now).
power sunroof 17" spoke wheels(Jeep liberty style).
duel exhaust with twin hemi tips(any body got any extra) beside me!
go man go or top bannana yellow paint.
black stripes (close to origonal style)
Any sugestions?

Here's my thoughts -
First New Orange Challenger with big HEMI rolls onto dealer's lot.
NR takes keys and drives above described Beast off dealer's lot . . .:racing:

If it is all it is cracked up to be, I've told my wife she can expect to be driving our Magnum in two years. I'll trade in her car and get the Challenger.
I haven't driven a stick in years, but it will be just like riding a bicycle - just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.
If the Challenger doesn't work out, though (too much hype, not enough to back it up especially against the other brands' flavors), I'll look into a Charger or 300c SRT8 (again, my wife will get our Magnum).

I guess he can pay for it if he wants to keep it for awhile...but definatly has to drive it LIKE he stole it!:racing:

As much as I've modded the bejesus out of Darth, he's still a practical car. Just hauled a bunch o crap around in him today in fact. The Challenger will be the weekender, and I don't plan on modding that car at all (just as if I had an SRT Mag I'd leave it alone -- mostly -- as well).
It'll be an SRT or whatever the Dodge Boys claim is the Badass version, but if its just a 6.1 I'll pass entirely as a 6.1 in a 4100 lb car is tooo easily beatable for my taste. I can justify my station wagon getting its ass kicked by a GT or a Cobra but not what should be a purpose-built muscle car.

That's what I'm worried about too - hence I'd just look for a charger or 300 srt8

Plan as of now: 1. Maggie kept as intended, replacement for SUV w/AWD for snowy trips to work (damn it's been a FUN replacement!). 2. Based on final version info, Challenger purchased for fun car! :)

if they come out with a manual, I will buy the challenger should only be manual. Raw horsepower needs a manual!!

If they offer a manual, do you think times will be faster than a slush box?
gn300

Might not be faster on the track but will be a whole lot funner on the street!
How will esp work when 2nd gear gets sideways?

My plans:
Wait for SRT version of the car
Get REALLY loud nasty exhaust
Add big cam just for rumbling noise (if tuning is available)
GSM Torque mod
Nitrous - maybe go bonkers with a direct port system.
Drag radials

Make mine Plum Crazy w/a black vinyl top, black leather buckets & a pistol grip!

That's if decide to let go of my 5 year old WRX with 22K miles on it (paid in full).

Already been said, but I'd suggest reversing your mod plans and mod the hell out of the Challenger (less weight) with a manual (weekender right?) and enjoy the Mag auto as your daily driver. IMHO going hog wild trying to make a 4100 lb vehicle ultra fast is counter intuitive. It would be a lot faster by shedding weight, but then it would not be a fun, comfortable Magnum!
