I plan on having the threads tight, and bottom out just as the knob comes into alignment. I will use either a helicoil, or other insertable steel thread.

Is it available in bright yellow?
STROGUY, I wouldn't count on it. If you read the first post, I am trying to find out if there is enough interest in doing this for it to be worth it. It is looking good so far, but I don't have enough people yet to do it.
I would require a minimum of 17 people confirmed, and prepaid.
I still have a few details to work out as well so small fluctuations in price etc. may still crop up. These will be perfect, and to do that takes a bit of prototyping first.
Right now it looks like 14 people have said they would buy one. A few have said "~cool" but that doesn't mean much other than to make me feel good and I do appreciate it! So don't get me wrong. And 3 have said they'd like a piston shifter. Which I can do as well. I just need to find a picture of a new Hemi piston! Anyone?
So, in order for me to make any ONE of the different designs, I would need 17+/- a few that wanted that specific design. (lettering doesn't apply to this rule) Meaning I don't need 17 people all wanting the crazy fluted and ribbed one with R/T on it. I just need 17 wanting the crazy fluted and ribbed one period!
Is it available in bright yellow?
You can have ANY COLOR you want.

Yellow - that is good thing.
After its color then can the letters be done to remove the color in the letter?
Wouldn't assume that the cleaned letters could get another color added to them. Maybe easier to hand paint them in.
From what you show what are the approximate height and circumference of the shift handles?
Can those be skinnier on bottom and v-out bigger on top? How smooth on half cut on the back half?
Thinking out loud here to throw ideas to you, to everyone, with full understanding that certain requests may be costs prehibitive.

I'm sure ESAD can do a number of things, but we will be forever saying I want this to do this and mine to be this. There are some things I would like to change, but the end product is staring us in the face and you should make this a black and white issue, yes or no and go from there. To have a singular custom design at this price is rare. If you want somthing else then the price will skyrocket out of control. Look at the thread for the LX emblems. That went through several design changes and about 40gazillion threads b4 they got their final product. They are happy but it does cause frustration on the producer. Just my two cents worth.

Well until some walls are established, questions will always come. But until he has a bunch of ideas/requests/how tos/opinions/ he doesn't have his hands dirty into the market wants.
Then set off to the side high item one offs. Then items that vary in stock and set procedures. Do the same for design one offs. Now he has it down to what he can work on a regular basis based on time, stock, hours put in, profit, start & finish times to meet demand. As the free time is avaiable he can start doing more one off requests.
I think the concept is great, it sets our cars apart for all the others, oh, except for the 100 people ordering from you now they need to seperate from them also so the line offer expands, the more expands the more money may control outreaches of this item.
Its a great concept as long as marketing stays ahead of the game with a vision.
Good luck!!
Stro, and Dave. I agree with both of you. But like you said, I'd love to, and could very well make anything you can imagine. BUT any further lathe work at this point and it's not worth it. By this I mean, flaring from small to thick at the top.
I'd like to do just these 3 designs for now plus the piston (if many want it) and if it goes well enough I'll do a lot more than this.
Davesatdoasisbar
12-26-2005, 12:55 AM
Thats good - design establishemts are made.
Now for the shift handle do have aproximate height and circumforunce down for the shifters? Can it be colored to choice then the lettes be done to remove the coloring or all completed then just the letters filled with color. Not sure how that works, what you put on it. Is it painted on electrostatic painted or??
Davesatdoasisbar
12-26-2005, 01:12 AM
They will be anodized.
You can have the letters colored the same as the rest of the part, or I can machine the letters after the first color anodizing which will leave them silver colored and unprotected, which means it would have to go back and get clear anodized which will add ~$20 ea. I know it would look cool and all that but I am trying to maintain a low cost.
I totally understand that you trying to do this for us a low cost but somebody might want to branch out alittle even knowing more costs are involved to get totally satisfied.within reason.
Imagine the fluted one being silver inside and the outside whatever color. . . awesome but expensive and time consuming. AND you have to be careful as hell not to scratch what has already been anodized. (not worth it to me.)No was thinking the block anodized, pre cut, the the fluted areas done, whatever are remains stays the original anodized color and the rest remains metal. Maybe have to put a clear over all that though.
Just more thoughts.
Thanks
Ok. Of course, if someone wanted it, and was willing to pay for the extra time, shipping twice, and extra special handling to machine the part after it has already been anodized once. . . . I'll do it.

Yes but there is NO guarantee the red will match. When anodizing things, it is best to do them all at once. This would include your shift knob because next week, the red will be slightly different.
That's the nature of the beast.

My thoughts exactly. That is nothing for a "one-off" You have to keep in mind right now that a lot of people may not have seen this post yet due to traveling for the Holiday. Either way you can count me in.
Programming of the part will take place in a few days with the first proto completed in approx 3 weeks. Sorry for the delay but it's hard to fit this in when there is work that takes priority.
It looks like you will have to "loctite" the threads with this.
I will try to have them bottom out as the knob comes into alignment but the threads will not be near as tight as the stock knob.

Not sure what you are refering to "satin bezel colour"
The silver colored knobs are machined aluminum.
You would be best served if you want a naked aluminum knob with colored letters, to color them yourself. An easy way to do this would be to:
1) Degrease entire knob.
2) Mask the entire knob with 3M 2" tape.
3) Then Xacto knife out the letters very carefully.
4) Then hit the letters "lightly" with your choice of spray paint.
5) Let dry, and remove tape.

have seen aluminum anodized with a silver colour just to darken it a bit.. so that would be okay.. trying to decide what would look good in my car.. Magnesium RT.. maybe black with red letters.
can you mask it off before anodizing it? black with silver letters would look cool too... sorta like what is on the first page I guess.

whats the turn around time once the order has been taken?
Well, I'd suggest reading the entire thread if you haven't already. That way you can see what all is going on here. It is a little early to say that because I haven't even decided to do it yet. (depends on how many want these and will prepay)
I am deffinately making one so I will have all of the tooling designed and fabricated. (Posts, and nests for the CNC.) within 3 weeks.
Once I hit the green button, if I do. It shouldn't be long at all.
No more than 2 weeks max. Depending on several things. Like options may add to the turn around. So some people may get theirs before others.
If the oportunity ever came that I had to mass produce them, I am set up to do many thousands, 24hrs a day. Dealers? Distributors?

Optional High Polish before anodizing - add $15
Optional High Polish without anodizing - add $15
ESAD,
Do you have any pics showning these different finishes? It doesn't have to be our knobs, anything aluminum would do.
Thanks,

The Satin finish will be a bead blasted or sand blasted look.
High polish will look like chrome.
High Polish before color anodize will look like a christmas ball. Colored chrome.
Anodize over fresh machined will look like machined aluminum that has been colored.
I'll attach a picture in a few mins.

ESAD,
I like the look... but... I think it's kind of square. I like to rest my hand on the shifter when driving... and when it is in the rear most position in drive... That may be uncomfortable.
Have you consider making the top rounded, and tapering the bottom.
Michael

Michael
I can't taper to a smaller size as the knobs go to the bottom at this price point.
Maybe for the next series. I don't want to make the top round (like a ball). These are supposed to be squarish by design.
On the 00002 series, the top of the SRT logo'd knobs will have a small radius. This is to accommodate the SRT logo. The others have a slightly larger radius on top. Since this knob is so small, I may have to resort to lasering on the logos instead of machining them on.
Please check out the new knob posted in the first post.
Extremely limited, please let me know what you guys think!!

As I said in an earlier post re: anodizing.
If you want to anodize multiple parts, send them ALL to me.
They must all be done at once. Otherwise they will be different colors.
SO, if you want them "burnt orange" I will need a sample containing the exact color, and images of everything you want anodized before hand so I can give you a quote.

do you have any pictures of the machined parts and not of the computer graphics??
Not yet. If you read the entire thread you will see what is going on.
I am 3 weeks away from the first prototypes.
If I had the parts done, I think they would all be gone by now :)
This is not for any other reason except that there is other work on the machines. Parts that total in the thousands. . . .
Since the renderings are exactly what the parts will look like. . . this gives you a very good idea. The whole purpose of posting the renderings is to "Gauge your interest" in these parts. I will not make anything if there is no interest in the first place. :)

None are available at this time. It is the number of people that want them that makes them available. For now, these are "made to order" not to be stocked.
It looks like the first one to be made will be the 00001 series.
NOTE:There have been a number of people that have said this knob is too large. I will make one proto at 2" diameter. Then I will post some pics. If everyone likes it, I'll make it. If not, I will make it smaller until everyone likes it.
I am always taking names, because that will let me know if any particular one is worth the time and effort to produce.

PLEASE NOTE OPTIONS HAVE CHANGED. THERE IS NO LONGER A SATIN or "BLASTED" option as clearcoat anodize is offline.
"BRUSHED" has been added. Everyone should know what that looks like.
THOSE WHO HAVE "NATURAL" AS THEIR COLOR NEED TO DECIDE IF THEY WANT TO ADD "HP" (for high polish) OR "BR" (for brushed) OR "MACH" (for machined look) AFTER IT.
I have attached an image of what "machined look" is. These parts are old and scratched, so ignore the scratches. The light reflecting off the tool marks is what you can expect. Adding the HP option, will give you a chrome-like look.

That would be great. I think the size of the knob is not too large, but in comparison to the twiggy shaft we have in the cars, it appears that way. I think the knob being lower to hide the shaft more would look better. Just my 2 cents.
If we wanted one that was lower on the shaft, would that be a big job to get one done that way?
I'm interested in getting one, I'm just waiting until all options are finalized.

The black will be a dull finish.
The piston is not on the table right now.
I need to get a few of these existing designs going first.
I REALLY dont think anyone will like the piston because it will deffinately look like a block on top of a needle. I don't want to go there.

2 3/8" Diameter ball knobs are sold.
The rest will be 2" dia. and $25 cheaper. While it doesn't look like there is enough demand for them yet, please put me down for the following choices:
Part# 00000 - BALL - 2 3/8" - Lite Black - HP - R/T Logo
Part# 00003 - T - Lite Black - HP - HEMI
I'll take whichever of these models gathers enough people for a production run first.
Am I correct in thinking that the "Lite Black - HP" option will produce something that looks similiar to black chrome? Or would "Silver - HP" be a better choice for producing this effect?
I might change my color choice depending on the answer to the following:Yes but there is NO guarantee the red will match. When anodizing things, it is best to do them all at once. This would include your shift knob because next week, the red will be slightly different.Because of this, would it be possible for you to offer a set of matching control knobs (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dodge-Magnum-Knob-Cover-Set-6-all-colors-MRK-n_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ40017QQitemZ802743077 5QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) and/or billet door pulls (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/L-K-NEW-05-06-Dodge-MAGNUM-CHROME-BILLET-door-pins_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33696QQitemZ802680 4321QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) at the same time?

I'll take whichever of these models gathers enough people for a production run first. OK
Am I correct in thinking that the "Lite Black - HP" option will produce something that looks similiar to black chrome? Or would "Silver - HP" be a better choice for producing this effect? There is no "silver" anodizing. It will be natural aluminum colored. "NATURAL-HP" will look like high polished aluminum (mirror finish) Black anodizing over this will give a high polished black look, but not quite like black chrome.
I might change my color choice depending on the answer to the following:Because of this, would it be possible for you to offer a set of matching control knobs (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dodge-Magnum-Knob-Cover-Set-6-all-colors-MRK-n_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ40017QQitemZ802743077 5QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) and/or billet door pulls (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/L-K-NEW-05-06-Dodge-MAGNUM-CHROME-BILLET-door-pins_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33696QQitemZ802680 4321QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) at the same time?
If you send me those parts, I will anodize them with your knob.
You are looking at about $30 more to anodize your parts too.
You will have to remove the little o-rings on the door lock pulls yourself, before sending to me. And don't send me the chrome ones!
Before committing to any purchase I would like a better idea of what my costs would be, but I am definitely up for this mod... The prices are pretty firm already. The only one that is in question is the ball. They are a major pain to process, and the cost is high on them. So they will be rare.

Are you only doing the ball with "HEMI" or can I get one with "R/T"?
ESAD,
Are you only doing the ball with "HEMI" or can I get one with "R/T"?
I can do R/T.
You have a picture of the black? I want to know if its black black or black greyish.
I really wanted yellow but the yellow isn't BRIGHT yellow like I would like.
So I could go with black and paint in my yellowing lettering instead of the other way around.
The black is BLACK BLACK BLACK. DEEP DARK BLACK :)

Is this a true statement?
The yellow in the picture is not deceiving, looks as the picture shows and is actually not a bright yellow at all?

BTW, what model number do you want?
It could be. Those are computer renderings and not actual parts.
I'll say that the yellow in reality is a bit brighter than that.
You should also note that the color darkens over high polished surfaces.
If you anodize a sand blasted surface, the color is brighter.
It's the same color, it's just that the rough surface resulting from blasting reflects more light to your eyes from many different directions than a high polished surface.

I think I am going to hold off until a tapered design is on the table. These look awesome but I just can' get used to the skinny rod meeting up with a large flat surface.
I wonder if someone could make a sleeve to cover that pencil rod and fit into a shifter handle to make it look more like the beef that is under the hood. Half the time I think my wife is going to snap that rod in two.

Regarding the the people who have their ball "black". I will not paint them black. That ruins the whole "BALL BEARING" theme. The only thing I could do for you is black chrome. That will shoot the price up a bit. Keep this in mind!
For those that have Satin Black, steel cant be anodized. and I suggest black chrome. Then maybe I could lightly blast it. But it is what it is after that.

Whoops... I didn't see that the balls were steel (my bad, I need to read things more carefully).
I thought that they were also aluminum, and would therefore be anodized (hence my question about the black/silver anodizing that might have produced a black chrome finish, as well as the question about the color-matching for anodizing other parts at the same time).
Oh well... guess I'll have to wait for enough people to sign up for the T-handle in order to get all of the interior bits of my Magnum done.
Meanwhile, go ahead and take my name off of the first list. I'll pass on the 'balls of steel' (sorry... couldn't resist! <grin>)

I also really liked the layered wood series 3? The one that really caught my attention, looking at the pic, the one in the bottom row in the middle. Well, I said from the beginning that I would need a minimum of 20 people to make any one of the designs. I went ahead with the Series 00001 knobs with only 10 people signed up (Four of those backed out; really depressing) because I knew some of the guys had their hearts set on these knobs.
I have spent well over $1000 of my own money setting this up, and it takes time. I am doing this when I have nothing else that needs my attention.
I have a bunch of the parts run, but now I have to program all of the different logo's. Proof them out, etc. I will be spending much of this weekend running the pre-paid knobs. Those that didn't opt for anodizing or high polish will go out right away. Those that did, will ship late next week baring any unforeseen issues.
None of the other knobs will be made without a minimum of 20 prepaid people signed up.

Esad,
I'm sorry to hear that so many people backed out on this. You have obviously put in alot of your own time and money in presenting this offer to everyone here. You should know that your hard work is appreciated by many here.
Just wanted you to know that.

I also would like to thank him for all his time and effort. Come on people, let's get our balls on a stick!!!
Gentlemen,
Thanks for your kind words, I know those that are interested are very interested. I also know for a fact, that you will love these.
I think from now on, I will have to take a non refundable deposit just to get on the list. I think that will help everyone stay interested :)
I just rolled in from the shop and am that much further along.
Will go back tomorrow afternoon with all my logo programs, download them into the machine and start finishing this first buncha knobs.

ESAD, move me from the 00002 series to the ball. I'll take it polished also please sir. I have not been replying to this thread that much due to the fact that it is so long. But you know I was here from the word go and I still want a custom knob. PUT ME DOWN FOR A HIGH POLISHED BALL, "HEMI".

ESAD, I think I would like to change form R/T on the ball to the standard "Hemi"
00000-BALL-2.0-NATURAL-HP-HEMI Thanks, hopefully we can get this done in the next group. Just let me know when you need payment.

HEMI isn't standard. You can have R/T at no additional cost if that is what you are thinking. Let me know.

Sorry, I meant standard as in everyone else getting it. I think it would look better with "Hemi" written on it, thanks.
