View Full Version : To LOWER, or NOT TO LOWER: Poll

I've seen very few comments in favor of "NOT Lowering",
and have a hunch that most like the "lowered look."
Personally, I don't like the "lowered" look and it has nothing to do with clearance -- maybe I'm influenced by my truck and SUV experience.
Anyway -- this is a simple poll -- you Like or you don't Like.
Just curious to see how this shakes out.

The lowered look by FAR! IMO, our LX's have just way too much of a wheel well gap. One thing I have always loved about BMW's is their stock stance, and minimal gap. After lowering my magnum, it felt like i took 1000lbs off the weight...A huge difference.

I disagree, respectfully. As long as a wheel is concentric with the wheel well, I think it looks good.
Actually, lowering, if you don't take this into consideration, might screw that up (i.e. you might HAVE TO get bigger tires).
And, actually, I guess I like the gap around the tire -- don't like the "DUB" Hotwheel look.
Remember, this is butter pecan ice cream vs french vanilla ice cream.
Which you like really doesn't make a rats @$$.

Okay, I answered FOR the lowered look, but prefer the driveability the extra inch of ride height that my AWD affords. Before this car I drove a Pathfinder with a 3" suspension lift, with tires from Mickey Thompson, D!ck Cepek, etc., and enjoyed the ability to mash through any terrain that would send anything else home crying. I couldn't give ALL that up.
Funny how the word D!ck is censored here. :p

Hey Bragon....what do you mean by concentric, and explain about needing the larger tires.
One of the things I love about this forum is all the different ideas of what looks good, some I agree with, and some I dont.
can my butter pecan be Ben & Jerries..lol

By concentric, basically the wheelwell arc is "parallel" to the tire circumference, that is, the space is equal all the way around
(this applies only with a perfectly circular wheelwell like the Magnum's) --
with the stock tires, I think the wheel/tire is positioned about where it's concentric (same centerpoint) with the wheelwell arc.
I may be stretching it, but if you lower the stock wheel, the space at the top of the wheel may be smaller than it is at the sides --
so to make concentric you need a bigger (circumference) tire.
I've seen a lot of lowered cars where part of the top of the tire is actually "truncated" (hidden behind the wheelwell) -- not desirable, in my opinion (Blue Bell French Vanilla).

I just lowered mine yesterday with the Goldline 1.5" drop springs. To me, it makes the car look right. It make the stock wheels look better IMO. That's my vote.

I like the look of a lowered car. I've lowered dozens of cars for looks or for track performance. I've also raised cars for performance (rally cars, for instance).
If your Magnum, 300C or Charger is a daily driver, you have to consider the negative aspects of lowering. Stock, the car has about 5.5 " of ground clearance but a huge 120" wheelbase. Lowering will increase the likelyhood of scraping the car against the ground, especially going in and out of steep driveways. If you drive in snow, clearance is also an issue.
Lowering by swapping out springs will stiffen the spring rate. The ride will stiffen a bit. The OEM shocks will not be compatable with the new spring rate. Experience is showing faster wear out on the shocks, leading to a degradation in handling and control. At this moment, I do not know of any AM shocks for the LX.
Coilovers are a good way to go, especially if they are fully adjustable. The only downside is the price.
For now, I am leaving my 300C and my Magnum R/T at stock height until more tuned suspension packages are available (Mopar are bringing out a coilover kit soon).

I never noticed if there's too much of a gap between the tire and wheel well. I scrape too much already, I don't need to have the car any lower. If the gap could be lessened without lowering the suspension, I'd go for it.

This is the first time I've ever lowered a car. Love the look and handling but have had issues with driveways and such.

Well, after 40 plus votes, the only surprise to me is the split -- I really expected fewer votes AGAINST LOWERING.
Thanks to all for keeping this poll CIVIL -- no flames is pleasantly amazing.

Lowered looks great as Mine has a Mopar 1" drop. I would not however go any lower cause right now my headers scrap whenever I go over speed bumps. 1" is as low as I go and is what I have in my sig pic.

Since these are chesty muscular looking cars, lowering makes them look even tougher!
I am all for the low-approach!!

lowered and little bitty tires is not a good combo - mines down with Eibach Prokits and big meaty 255-55 KDW2's and I can scrape it if I want.
Someone once said that if you don't scrape once in a while, it ain't low enough!
