It depends on your needs. If you just want a good reliable ride and don't care about having tons of power then yes. I came from a 4 banger Chevy Tracker. Any V6 is better than that.

I test drove an SE. It had more power than I expected but it's no Hemi either. Test drive it yourself before you decide.
It's hard to find a 6 cylinder car that seats 5 that's not fugly or a POS. The Magnum is it, SE or otherwise.

Get the 3.5 or you'll be kicking yourself. The 2.7 is the choice for my employer's fleet in the U.S. and everyone who drives one, complains about feeling at risk when needing to make a pass. The 3.5 will give you the grunt to take care of business.

ultimitly it is your descion, but they are beautiful cars and have enough engine to move them. My 2nd car is a ford escort, and i don't even notice a power difference , lets face it when your just cruiseing the engine dont matter. I know some people are addicted to power (me included) but the 2.7is a great car.

Personally , I think that the big 6 is the better choice.
If I was doing a LOT of long distance driving and had to sweat the gas.. the 2.7 is great. Otherwise..
Get the car that makes you feel the best!

Well, gas is kinda the point of my mom trading her van, so she was looking at the magnum SE, because she cant afford the SXT. Doesent Zoomers make a dual exhaust setup for the V6 magnums? An intake and JEt chip would help some too, right.

To me, I would get the R/T, but thats if i had the money. I will Be driving the SE too, so I would like to have a little fun. Well, i go to test a SE tomorrow....dont have to worry about snow.....we have no snow in Hawaii!

ah, they have a double for the 3.5 charger... I believe it bolts up the same as the charger because its the same platform......The double would be the same for the 2.7, right?

If your prime consern is gas then the SE is perfect.

I saw a 10k SE on ebay located in HI....High bid was $10,100....I think HI is a good place to find a used Magnum, i.e., former rental.....The SE is probably fine for youir roads. Just use OLD NAVY's advice about oil....Do a search. :)

I have an se and its perfect for daily use.. you can get on the freeway with out feeling like your going to get run over even with the 1000lbs of add ons I have.

They do have a double exhaust for the 2.7 I believe its the hemi exhaust system with a slight modification... But honestly from what I have heard going with the double exhaust on either v6 cuts power because its breathing to freely so I would recomend the single

Oil....what is this about Oil.........well, from what I heard, the Zoomers gave some people a LOT of power when they installed it.

JOhnOil!!! Did someone say oil???.:wrongforu

What is generally changed is the torque and HP peak, either up or down, when a exhuast mod is made. I would assume (remember what that word spell's) that the torque & HP curve would move down down the rpm scale.

But what do I know, I'm just an old retired Squid.

Just to ask, is the price basically the same for both versions?

goodluckI have in mind an SXT AWD and if they offer it for '07 model a diesel version. However I might do a Sprinter conversion van or Winabago model and do some traveling, if I don't buy a second home in Southern New Mexico.

I would get a Hemi, but I would end up dead or no DL for sure because I love power & speed. Having survived the super cars of the 60's & 70's, I don't want to press my luck.

When Christmas is over and if I have any money left I will have Maggie redone for duels. When ever it happens I'll take the digital camera and do pictures for all to see.

Well, i will have first person experience with this issue tomorrow. I guess, what it all boils down too is how the car is driven. My point being, if you drive slow and have a light foot, the 2.7 is great. In my case, i want to show off the car and thus have a heavy foot. With my SE, i use more gas driving this way, with the SXT, i can accelerate better with less rpm.... Equaling hopefully, better mileage with the 3.5. Driving the car on the highway i drive on average at 120kph, this is causing the 2.7 to rev higher than the optimum rpm which would be around 2100rpm. With the 3.5, i am hoping that the rpm's are lower producing a better mpg ratio than the 2.7 at equal speeds. Anyone have any feedback on this? I can get 480km on a tank of fuel travelling at an average of 120kph. Conversion: 297miles ~ 70mph.

i get 300 to a tank in my sxt and i average about 75-90mph on the highways were i spend 90% of the time. i also floor it about every chance i get though so pretty much every freeway onramp and everytime i go to pass, or just when i want to hear my zoomers roar :P

I get a little over 400 miles to a tank on my SXT. But I'm a pretty conservative driver who thinks cruise control is my best friend. Good luck on your search. Any Magnum is better than No Magnum.....

I didn't buy the car with a thought for economy, if I wanted something to always brag about mpg I would have bought another diesel VW, not a two ton gas powered land yacht. Best I ever did on my '00 VW diesel was 72 mpg, but that was tough to do at such slow speeds and such. Generally I got low to mid 50's mpg's on that car.

I have SE magnum I love it, I only drive 7 miles to work everday, I started a new job right out of college and this what I could get. But I plan to swap the motors out anyway so I don't care if I got the sxt model anyways. But also you have to do some mods so its different then anybody else's magnum. And plus if I wanted to do I still could smoke the crap out of my tires, I drive about 75-80mph everyday anyways.

Funny. I have a SE and can't seem to "smoke the crap" out of my tires. Please, tell me how this is done in a SE.

Like mine it probably does not have ESP and mine will squawk the tires if pressed hard or it would smoke 'um if revved and dropped in gear. Actually the little 2.7L is a strong little engine putting out more hp per cubic inch then the 5.7L Hemi.

OK, I admit it ... I'm a closet owner of a 2.7 SE. I'm almost afraid to admit to it, but I have to say it's not all bad. I had a $19k budget for a new vehicle with a decent warranty. I drive about 40k miles a year driving between Minnesota and the Dakota's.

This left me to choose between a base model Pacifica closeout, base Kia or Hyundia SUV. I stumbled across the Magnum walking in to buy the Pacifica, and realized for the first time I could fit a Magnum in my budget.

I had a inferno red 2005 SE shipped in from Wisconsin. For $19k you get a sharp car that still turns heads, CD player with decent bass, power locks, doors. It handles great and can still haul a load a goods. My SE pulls in 25mpg in the city and 23mpg on the interstate (go figure).

I don't pass on the on the highway and have the cruise control locked in at 70mph.

Now that I know the culture amongst the LX'rs, I should trade it in for a Hemi just so I'll fit in, but I'll hold my cards for now.

What else would you buy for under $20k???

Maybe when I put some 20's and replace my wimpy tail pipe, I'll get up the nerve to post some pics. I can't thow too much cash into it, then I may as well of scored a SXT.

If you by a SE, make sure you get the tinted window option, I have seen some fleet maggies with no window tint on the rear windows ... and it's not flattering.

John I drive on your island all the time and with the traffic and roads, the 2.7 would be fine, especially with our gas prices. I have the RT here in Hilo, but that is to satisfy the second childhood in me. Its overkill for most of my driving, but fun when pushed. Tom

Your right no esp depends on the road surface and what I can do.

Its a great car under 20,000 car. I plan to rebuild mine as soon as I can pay off my damn student loans. Make it a little unqie to my taste, I still get tons and tons head turning with my car, I just tell that it is a se and I am redoing it why spend the extra extra 10G when I could put that in upgrades.

Put a Flowmaster 50 series on the car and take off the back resinator and people will think it's a Hemi. Put the black bumper protector on the rear bumper, SXT badges, and maybe get a set of OEM used wheels like I did, and who's to know??? Also at Wal-Mart they carry a Pioneer 4 way speaker that drops into the rear low mount in back with out any cutting or anything, even the screw holes match up. Also I might suggest Fog lights and HIR high & low beam replacement bulbs.

Being a fellow SE owner, I suppose that I should throw my $0.02 in.

I was fresh out of a nasty divorce when I bought my SE. I had been longing for a Magnum since the relentless commercial campaign during the 2004 NBA Playoffs and Finals (watched every game of my beloved Pistons).

Having to start fresh financially, I didn't have $30K to drop on a ride - if so, believe me it would have been an RT. There was absolutely no other car that even came close in comparing to the Magnum - RWD, 4-Door with Hatch, Bad Ass looks, Mercedes refinement.

I'm proud to drive my SE. It still commands respect everywhere it goes. You have to remember, unlike us, there are tons of people (probably 7.5 out of 10) that don't know much about the Magnum. They can't tell between a SE, SXT, or RT. They just see one bad ass car. Period.

Bottom line: Have fun with it. Stay up on your maintenance, do the mods that YOU want, and you'll love every minute of it. There's no shame in driving a cool car with an economy-minded drivetrain. Especially in this day and age. My Magnum gets better gas mileage than my wife's Turbo PT. Go figure.

I had just finished a few mods today (pics later), and I was at the gas station after a full-detail. This guy (mid 40's) pulls up and starts gassing up his new Hummer H2. He was eyeballin' the Mag for a few minutes. Finally he said "I bet that's a blast to drive!" - I just smiled and said "yes", then got back in the car.

It's just mind blowing to see a gray haired old man with their blue haired wife look the car over so long, then the kids in the ricer with the big wing and ground effects kid drool all over themselves as they drive by to the poor smuck in the minivan about to shed a tear as he looks at the Magnum while he fill's up. Even the redneck hillbillies long for the car, but they don't dare let their buddies know. Funny thing is their buddies feel the same way they do.:racing:
