View Full Version : Small thing, Big problem

About two weeks ago I bolted on some nice 22s. They were balanced by a good shop, had good tires put them, alignment, but I still had a pretty bad vibration. After re-torqueing the lugs with no change, I was about to start over with the tire balance when decided to check the wheel to hub fit. I found that I could get a 0.015 feeler gage between the two about half way around. That equaled about 0.135” of variation at the tread (about the thickness of two pennys).
The problem was the little spring clips that are over one or two of the lug studs from the factory. The clips are used to hold the break rotor on during assembly at the factory, but don’t do much once the car is built. The way my rims are built, there is little or no counter sinking of the stud holes on the hub side and were not mating properly with the hub face. I removed the clips and the vibration went away.
Thought I would pass it along.

That's OK, but, someday, and that day may never come, I will ask you to do me a favor.....:D I've had a lot of cars, and used a lot of after market wheels, and never had or heard of this problem before. Who'd a' thunk it? :???:

those retainer clips that hold the rotor on have to be removed on most aftermarket wheel installations. i took them off when i put on my wheels, and i just know from talking to people who put rims on for a living. they serve no purpose anyway once the car is assembled.

A good shop should have removed them!

Thats surprising that your "good shop" didn't know to remove those clips but there is also the problem with wheels being hib centric. If you are still getting a vibration hub centric rings are the fix.

The wheels were installed by me, in the parking lot at SEMA, after the tires were mounted and balanced. Funny how you can plan things for months, but it doesn’t come together until the 11th hour!

Funny, but CCW addresses this in their technical section. http://www.ccwheel.com/files/technical.php

Not that I'm above such things, but no.
I recieved the wheels with the tires mounted and balanced; I then I bolted them on. I will say that my Wheel-Bolting-On skills are secound to none, LOL.

They look like they may by the Gotcha Series Fury wheel.

You got it! They were built-to-order to accommodate big front breaks (coming soon) and as deep a lip as possible. I was trying for an old school deep dish look, you be the judge if I was successful. The front and rears are not interchangeable, with the rears being much deeper, but they are all 8" wide and are properly back-spaced. This is my daily driver, so they had to be fully functional.
The graphics are no longer on the car, except for the Boyde signature and Magnaflow. These were part of the SEMA deal, and I've been asked to leave them on for a while. Besides, my sons think it looks cool! Big thanks to Intrax for the hook up, and Codington for building them, even with no time left to do it!
