Has anyone changed their transmission fluid?
I'm thinking about going with Royal Purple's MAX ATF

However, they only list GM or Ford tranny fluids (DEXRON or MERCON) for replacement.

I like the idea of the tranny running cooler.

Anyone in the know, please comment.

My experience with Chrysler Transmissions suggests you can use only two fluids. ATF+4 from Chrysler (or Valvoline I think makes it now too), or Amsoil Universal ATF which is ATF+4 service rated.

I've not replaced mine yet at 30K, but when I do it will probably be with the usual Amsoil ATF that I use. I have 82K troublefree miles in my 300M using this fluid and this is in the notoriously fluid sensitive 4 speed auto trans that came in all LH platform cars and some of the V6 LX cars.

I guess the 6.1 wasn't out yet when this was posted.

(I'm looking for the oil weight for my SRT8 --

I believe that would be Mobil 0w40. At least that's what my SRT calls for. Hope that helps.( it should be stamped on the oil filler cap)

Yup -- 0W40 -- downloaded the 06 MSRT8 manual -- just went and had her changed at 1945 miles --
my superstition, always try to have the 1st oil change at 2000 miles.

Today I was at the dealer for a quick oil change on my 2006 RT Magnum. While waiting in the lounge - the service guy came in and talked to a lady about her oil change and included a discussion of "dirty power steering fluid and need to flush." Then - when I went to pick mine up I got the same pitch for my next trip.

Now in the '60s I knew a fair amount about cars and did all my own repairs. Over time the vehicles have become far more complex and I do very little myself. (The extra hundred pounds doesn't help either.) But I also don't think I got stupid just cause I got old. The power steering system is a closed system - it has no exposure to air nor any way I can imagine for it to get "dirty". Perhaps due to engine heat or design defects it could get overheated and thus become "burnt" or otherwise damaged by extreme heat - but the written report my dealer gave me with the $103 "Flush and Fill" estimate describes the issue as "found power steering fluid to be dirty/contaminated."

SO what is your view? A new profit center or is there a valid mechanical reason for the ATF in the PS reservoir to become contaminated or dirty?

Thanks guys - your help is phenominal for those of us who cannot quite keep up with the technology on these cars.

Highway fuel economy 26.5 MPG on the flat at 64 MPH - seems to be in good shape

Ask him why the hell he was looking at your power steering fluid :-P

Seriously - it should be good for lots and lots of miles before it needs changing. Dip your finger in the reservoir and see how it looks. If it looks OK, don't worry about it.

We have a PS flush machine at our shop...It's a great device for flushing actual contaminated systems...Bur the Dealership is giving you the "pitch" for an upsell on maintenance services.
