View Full Version : Pros/Cons To Rustproofing

Even though my car will be stored for the winter I was wondering should I get the doors and undercarriage rustproofed? Moisture and dirt will eventually cause rust so I would like to have some protection. The last thing I want is a corroded brown mess under my car. Is there anything I should be concerned about in getting this service done? Is it totally necessary or is it just a matter of keeping the underbody clean and dry? Any advice and comments welcomed.

I had mine done a few months after I bought it in 2006. The only draw back, the engine compartment looks like du-du with the rust proofing all over it. It needs to be done every year so that small holes in the rust proofing doesn't hold water/salt and cause rust to form under the coating. Outside of that, So far I have no rust.

do it your self-all you need to do is the inside of the door bottoms and make sure not to over load the drain holes. than the floor pans just do along the seams were they are joined together.

Is there a special poduct I would need to use?

1) Useless
2) Causes rust more often than prevents it (car rusts from moisture trapped under the goo)

a real waste of money. Modern cars are warranted against it and are very difficult to get to rust.

Just keep it clean.

Anyone doubting that their car underbody won't rust should take a look in this link showing a new Challenger with rust showing already. Something to think about.

Body rust and suspension rust are different problems. You pretty much will never avoid suspension rust. Body, however, should not rust unless the paint is compromised. I had "the goo" on my RT - made it unbelievably nasty to work on anything under the car, and the engine looked like turd.
