I have about 3 thousand miles on the Challenger. I get this "oil change required, contact dealer" message on the evic... WTF???????? Is this thing going to go off every 3K??? How do I get this thing out of here, and make it stay out? Fluids and all are in order. Haven't been able to find a post about it here... Thanks in advance

Turn the key to on but do not start. Pump the accelerator 3 times with in 5-10 seconds. The monitor should be reset. Most new cars have an oil life monitor so no need to get excited about it. It wont harm your car if you just decide to let it go. 3-5k on an oil change is not out of the ordinary. Enjoy your ride:racing:

I'll reset it and find out. Kind of annoying... With the advancements in everything, I was thinking of 5K oil changes...

Got this from one of Funky Chicken's posts.

How the "Oil Change Indicator" system works
This is good information and sheds a new light on oil changes.

TECH-TIPS # 43 –

"NEW INFORMATION" REGARDING THE NEW SINGLE MAINTENANCE

SCHEDULE AND OIL CHANGE INDICATOR SYSTEM

PLEASE ENSURE THAT SERVICE, PARTS, AND SALES PERSONNEL FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES
WITH THIS NEW OIL CHANGE INDICATOR SYSTEM AND THE NEW SINGLE MAINTENANCE
SCHEDULES AS IT WILL HAVE A DIRECT IMPACT ON HOW YOU WILL BE SERVICING YOUR
CUSTOMER’S VEHICLES
This new system was

introduced on 2007.5 D1/DH Ram 2500/3500 Trucks equipped with a 6.7L

Diesel engine and ALL 2008 models except Viper, PT Cruiser, SRT8 models, Grand Cherokee
equipped with a diesel engine, early built 2008 Sebring Convertibles and Avenger (built prior
07/09/2007)

. The new system is different than the Active Service System, or ASSYST, which is found on

Sprinter and Crossfire vehicles.
With the introduction of the Oil Change Indicator system customers will be notified via the cluster or EVIC
(Electronic Vehicle Information Centre / located in the overhead console or instrument cluster) that an oil
change is required. In addition to the new oil change indicator system,

maintenance schedules "A"

and "B" are NO LONGER USED

and have been combined into a single maintenance schedule.

The Oil Change Indicator system uses the Powertrain Control Module to process a variety of inputs to
determine the proper oil change interval. Below are the factors for both gas and diesel engines that
indicate severe use:

GAS ENGINES:
Ambient temperature

- Ambient temperature is less than -6 Celsius more than half of the engine run

time over the 4,200 kilometres period.

Average speed -

Average speed is less than 24 km/h over the 4,200 kilometres period.

Excessive run time -

Engine run time is greater than 250 hours. Excessive run time will set the severity

flag immediately regardless of current metrage.

Short trip

- Adjusted average trip length is less than 12 kilometres. Adjusted trip length is based on initial

ambient temperature and the algorithm is designed to detect trip lengths insufficient to fully warm the oil.

Trailer tow

- An algorithm based on engine speed, MAP, and ambient temperature is used to detect high

oil temperature operation.

E85 fuel criteria

- E85 fuel used at any point in the 4,200 kilometres period.

6.7L DIESEL ENGINES:
Mileage -

If the vehicle metrage since the last reset of the oil change monitor exceeds 12,000 kilometres.

Duty Cycle -

Accumulated Fuel Oil Dilution quantity since last reset is greater or equal to 1,720 grams.

Excessive fuel/oil dilution will set the severity flag immediately regardless of current metrage.

6.7l diesel engine oil change interval may fluctuate

depending on driving style. Driving styles such as

idling and frequent stop and go type driving can increase the frequency of the engine oil change. This is
the result of more frequent regeneration of the exhaust after-treatment system, which can decrease the
life of the engine oil.

THE SYSTEM FOR EITHER GAS OR DIESEL ENGINES CANNOT KEEP TRACK OF DUSTY
CONDITIONS OR TIME ELAPSED SINCE THE LAST MAINTENANCE. IN FACT, IT IS POSSIBLE
FOR THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE MAINTENANCE TIME INTERVAL TO ELAPSE WITHOUT AN OIL
CHANGE REMINDER. IN EITHER CASE, IT IS THE

OWNER’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT

MAINTENANCE IS PERFORMED ACCORDING TO THE RECOMMENDED INTERVAL.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD OIL CHANGE INTERVALS
EXCEED 10,000 KILOMETERS (GAS ENGINES) / 12,000 KILOMETERS
(DIESEL ENGINES) OR 6 MONTHS, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.
With reconfigurable displays (EVIC), the message may also include the dealership’s name and phone
number, which can be programmed into the vehicle with a scan tool (2008 LX and DR models only).
However, the dealership must receive the customer’s approval before adding this information.
Hitting the trip button will temporarily end the message, and it will reappear with the next key cycle.
Technical Service Bulletin 08-014-07 was released and explains how dealers can display their name and
phone number in the message.
In addition to the oil change, the related items listed in the Service Information should also be performed
when service is indicated. All other items will follow a single maintenance schedule with the same
calendar/metrage intervals no matter what the oil change interval.
Dealership service and sale personnel

will need to ENSURE that all customers are made aware of

this new Oil Change Indicator system and single maintenance schedules and their significance

.

Doing so should begin with new vehicle delivery and continue during service. Be certain customers
understand that the engine controller is making decisions based on varying conditions and oil change
intervals can may also vary.

THE OIL CHANGE INDICATOR CAN BE RESET USING THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
1. Turn the ignition key to ON but do not start the engine.
2. Slowly depress the accelerator to the floor and release it three times within 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
NOTE - Repeat the process if the indicator does not reset.

Whatever that converts to in miles.. Mine didn't chime til 6,000 miles and I changed the oil at 4k. I've heard of them going off as low as 2,500 miles though. Thanks for the info.

dont quote me, but i think theres a way to change the interval of the reminder. thought i saw it in the owners manual.

mine also went off at 2500 but I had already chnged out prior to the upgrades and the reset was very simple for the pushbutton start you have to hit it twice as the first one is only for accesories. :)

No way to change it. You must be thinking of the pre 2008 models with a Nav. That could be changed as well as tire rotations, air filter changes and others. These are all based on miles only. The new system is an algorithm that takes many factors into play. It can be as low a 2500 miles and as high as 6-7k .

wow, sounds so complicated that it;s almost un-trustworthy.

Thanks for the find Bigsnake! + rep for you. I missed it. Guess with the hard driving and the warm temps, it went off. Probably due for a change before long anyway. Nice of the dealer to tell me about it... LOL... Appreciate the help...
