View Full Version : STS Twin Turbo on my RT

Hey figured I'd bring everyone up to date on my most recent project which started on Monday, I took my car into RDP Motorsport for the first of this instalation on a 5.7 VVT Challenger. The turbo set-up is from STS and were designed to handle up to 1000hp so they were custom built and the individual has decided to go bigger and had no use for them. So with statment I did get one heck of good deal on the entire set-up, the downside is I have to sell my MBRP exhaust as it doesn't make sense to cut it up so I will be getting a custom exhaust also. We are hoping to be in the 500 to 600hp range out of the stock block and run it until the pistons or the intake crack or fail. Being a first dynosteve says this is the fun part of doing these projects and figures that I should have the car back next week. As far as what we are adding to the kit chnaging the injectors going with 55s, boost a pump, it will have the most up-to-date safety devices installed.
Here are some pics of the wiring, intercooler and plumbing to date, enjoy and feedback is welcome :thumbs_u:

I went out to RDP last night and got to see the progress and get some ansewrs to questions about the system being installed. Steve said he wants me to enjoy the car until the winter rolls around and asked me not to break it :racing:I said okay how much boost are we going to be running and he said "7 to 8 pounds" is safe and lets use that as are starting point. Then over the winter we can see what is going on inside the engine. :thumbs_u: He also decided to use all of the MBRP 3" piping for the exhaust and will remove the mufflers and the resonators so this should look really clean and he is going to design a custom tip.

Man that is looking sweet. Can't wait to see it done and some video of it. I know Steve will so an excellent job of tuning that monster.
Is anyone going to fab up a heat shield or at least wrap the pipe in some insulation at this point. That will be a lot of heat soak in the air charge pipe. I know you are running an intercooler, but still, this will boost those intake temps and the cooler the intake charge the better, IMO.

not enough to call myself some kind of expert, but between what ive read on here, and see out of 1 or 2 motors in houston, i have enough grasp to know some things that i would and wouldnt do ;)
turbo on a stock block being one of them.
not because it cant be done, but because i wouldnt want to have to watch the boost gauge and wide band 24/7 to make sure im not boosting with no fuel correction.

With as much room as these cars have where the headers are... I can't see the reasoning with rear mounted turbos...
Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do something...
12 feet of exhaust tubing and another 16 feet of intake tubing is friggin nuts...
a couple of big T3 or small T4 turbos running in their peak efficiency island wouldn't even need an intercooler on this size motor...just straight into the manifold...

I felt the same way until I was at the strip watching a GTO with one of these setups. Despite the "miles-o-pipe" they work really well!
Like I said earlier, if they can tune it properly it will be a TORQUE MONSTER.

Turbo's make massive amounts of heat. Get them away from your engine and you will increase engine longevity. From what I've heard, the lag on their systems has barely any difference to putting the turbo in the engine bay.

Use a turbo blanket and the whole heat issue goes out the window. And any system that has over 20 feet of tubing is going to have some serious lag and wont reach full potential.
Im surprised that Steve went with one of those kits instead of his RDP one which is near the headers and looks spectacular.

Steve had this set-up which was requested by a customer for a high end build and after he was done test fitting he came up with a different direction and is using his own turbos. The unique thing about these turbos is they were built for a 1000hp motor. Also he is planning to stage them for low end and high end. I can't wait for next week.

Any info on the oiling system for 1000+hp? We inquiring minds would like to know. Or maybe I am the only one that wants to know since other aftermarket pumps seem to be a royal PITA.

What made you chose a Turbo Kit over a Super Charger...?
I have always liked the idea of turbos if done right. Well after spending some time with Steve and discussing S/C vs Turbo I started to research and found that nobody had done the new 5.7 VVT with twin turbos, the unit went up for sale and I made my decision to go for it. It's not often that you get to meet someone that understands turbos and the late model hemi and can flat out tune these hemis. :thumbs_u:

No dumb questions if you look at the back the exhaust feeds the turbos and then it returns the gasses to the intercooler which feeds the intake abbreviated version. Lots of pipe for the rear set-up by STS and very labor intense. :modding:

We are currently running 12 pounds of boost, the tune is very safe at this point the turbos don't spool up until 4000 rpm, they are 61's and as Steve said we will need to put a lighter spring in in the upcoming weeks. We will be taking it out to the track for test and tune night soon. :racing:

I don't know honestly she ran very smooth and was very responsive, the turbos don't start to spool until 4000 rpm and under easy throttle you can feel it just start to push you into the seat. We are on the very conservative side for right now as we need to install the boostapump which arrived today and get her on the dyno.
I hope she stays in one peice for the rest of this season until the snow flies also, but deep down I now I will have a failure most likely pistons or the bakalite intake. As Steve told me just respect what I have and what he has done.
Being that this is my first FI of any type I am liking it alot and on a roll on the highway it really does move out. As I learn and get the technical information I will post what it is as I am sure everyone wants to know what can be done with this 5.7 VVT engine.
Thanks for asking. :)

Dude nothnig but mad respect for you and steve. Any one willing to throw turbo's on thier brand new challenger even though it can be very dangerous, takes BALLS. So I take it you dont have a boost gauge or A/F gauge? If not I would get those two ASAP. you dont want to go in to boost at part throttle. Thats my biggest concern with all F/I builds including mine. Once again man CONGRATS!!! I hope it all works out for you and steve. Your in good hands. best of luck to ya!

with first hand experience in this car to and from the Mopar Nationals (I shot the Heath cruise video posted earlier), what an awesome job Steve and RDP did.
you were generally good about staying out of the boost area, but it was funny as hell when you didnt and steve gave his challenger a quick throttle tap (angry exhaust rap) as a means of scalding you :panic:

know it was a TT. Now get it to the track!

The car looks and sounds amazing! Can't wait to see dyno and track results!
you dont want to go in to boost at part throttle.
So, i've seen this thrown around the LX Community for a while now, and have never asked but guess no time like the present... Why stay out of boost at part throttle? Is it a lack of tuning capability or what? I had a 03 cobra a couple years ago and it would boost part throttle all the time and never had a problem...

the computer will tyr to get to stoich 14.7 and then well you can image with a few pounds of boost will do to a stock piston with that lean of a A/F ratio
From what I hear you can tune a good amount of it but it still is not 100% do able

That's correct we don't have the boost coming on until 4000 rpm for safety reasons right now. I will be taking into the shop for the completion this week full dyno, and adjustments. I have almost 800 miles and not a bit of problem no codes running very smooth. Really runs well almost scarry when the boost comes on not alot of time to shift from 4000 to 5200 but damn does she pull hard and the sound is freakin awesome.
I suprised the hell out of my neighbor with his new porsche took him for a ride

She drives great  I think Steve got some footage on our way down I have to see as he was loding up all of our pics and video and going to make up a couple of discs for us. If not I'll get some footage at the track or cruising.
Here is one from Heath RD all I have but you can hear a little from inside

Very stealthy, too...most guys looking under the hood had no clue. Jeff even told a couple people to look under the back of the car (thinking they would see the turbos and be enlightened). They looked and still had to be told what they were looking at. It was rather funny...I guess you had to be there (KEN!).

11-14-2009, 07:47 AM
Well we got her on the drums last night and she put down some very respectable numbers 481.2 rwhp on 5.5 psi. That's all for now as we need to change the waste gate springss in order to get more boost. Can't wait to run at the track on Sunday :racing:

its accutally the waste gate springs we need to change mate, but all in all for a stock 5.7 it made some good numbers the vct is a huge advantage on this motor
