Since two of you have quite a bit of work done by HHP, and maybe other members here too I wanted to seek out some advice.
If I were to spend ~$7,000 or so, what would be a good build to get some more horsepower? I was debating going higher and adding a supercharger, but to do it properly it looks like it may cost well over $10,000 to reinforce the motor so I don't blow the motor up...
So, I ask, what should I do if a S/C is out of reach cost wise? I won't be modding anytime soon, not even until next year at the LEAST, but want to at least start budgeting, and saving for modding part 2.
Things in mind:
- Getfrag swap, or some type of LSD system
- Drag radials
- Possibly Stage III cam? But would I be able to sell my Stage II cam for close to what I paid?
- Fuel injector upgrade?
Now comes to the realm of which I know nothing ....
Stroker? Forging my motor so it doesn't go ka boom? What does it take, what does it cost? What are the HP gains?
Other than that, is there anything I missed, TCM? PCM?
Upgraded intake manifold? (I don't even know where to start, how, or what to do)
Also, I did the Stage II Package, so I think I have the titanium retrainers, and upgraded valve springs, but do I need to upgrade the push rods, or upgrade either of those 3 components even more when doing any mods recommended?
I'm on HHP's site now and see the 392 stroker, what cam would go with that? The Stage III, or a different one altogether? What kind of power does that produce with my mods? Also, after that (If I went that route) how SAFE would nitrous be at that point? I am deathly afraid of nitrous, my brother blew his Trans Am up with it and only sprayed 75/100 shot a total of 10 times (Combined)

Also, lets say I did go the stroker route, would upgrading to Kooks LT be beneficial enough to justify the amount of money to upgrade? And is there any way to be street legal with LTs? Now that brings me to the stroker, would that pass emissions?

Well lets see....With what you have so far, if you wanted to build the bottom end...I would bump up to a 5.7 based 372 (6.1) or 392 (6.4). you can set the compression ratio to suit the power adder you plan on getting later on. As far as which company, you already did the top end with HHP..just finish it off with a HHP/BES short block and you will be golden from there. Long tube are a must in my book..No point in swapping to 6.1 headers just to save a nickle...like a lot of members are doing these days.. I have a Inertia 5.7 based 372 in my car and Im happy with the motor, but I plan on swapping that out for HHP's 392 late winter if everything goes right. there engines are a little bit cheaper (not much) but put out the same results and both have the smile on your face factor. As far as Superchargers goes, in my opinion supercharger is the way to go when your looking for power and like I told you before...some of the mods you are looking into can be installed with EZ'ssss. Labor prices will knock you in the head and most likely cost more than some mods. Also, start looking at some of the forsale threads, its a lot of stuff being sold these days that you can pick up for drop dead prices. Ok, on to nitrous...don't be scared of it, the ZEX kit is dummy proof and is very safe from what I can tell. Just don't do anything crazy or start fittling with sh1t because, you want to do a burnout for your friends..(Yes, I saw the engine code about brake/throttle crap)LMAO..
if you want to call me,,im up now... 443-740-3301

if you don't mind me asking, what power level are you looking to aim for???
450-500-600...??? I will warn you..driving a lx with 300 hp vs. 500-600+ is a completley different ball game. When I sprayed my stroker, I had no traction..so thats when the driver mod comes in....

Basically Street Life summed it all up from a 5.7L point of view...But the biggest question was his last question.. How far are you trying to go...?

Derrick got me straight, but to answer your question Ghostface (Derrick as well, haha this gets confusing!) I want to get the car around 500RWHP, I'm not really interested in going beyond that because I don't want to have to replace the transmission. Both the stroker, and S/C can get me to my power, and from what I can see, right around the same amount of money so that's why I am torn.
I am leaning towards the stroker with forged internals, but I'm still not sure what kind of power a 392 can put down with my mods + the stroker. And if I did do that, do I swap my cam for a different one? Derrick wasn't sure, that's why I am asking. And thanks again D, you were a ton of help!

cam is where the magic happens, so you would be leaving around 40 rwhp if you don't
i can assure you- you have no business messing with forced induction on a factory block, because eventually it will blow....

I have the HHP Stage II cam, so if I went with the 392 stroker, should I keep it at the cam I already have?

yep you want a different spec cam to use on a stroker compared to what you have right now
i mean with a stroker and your top end you will not make more than 430ish rwhp so your driving experience might not change a lot for the money you will spent. I think you are at the point where you should either build the block and spray it or if you do not want to be cheap you should pick up a used paxton blower and set it up to around 550 rwhp. we are talking about 6 grand plus or minus but in the end it will be worth it

I am debating a S/C, but I'm concerned with adding a blower with a stock bottom end.

Steve, the cam you have will work with a 392....if you want better, josh will work something out with you on a trade in of your stage II cam...
Trust me man, cut all this internet chatter, your going to get 1000 opinions when you can drive 40 minutes and see the stuff in person,,,Josh will set you straight, just call him or better yet,,,go talk to him in person..

I hear ya man, I'm just doing research to look at all of my options, we both know in the end I am going to talk to Josh and see what he says with the budget I have. I don't plan on doing anything drastic until next year, or maybe even after that. Next step is buying a house =P

incorrect......Ghostface Mag was putting down like 475 with a stock 6.1 and HHP's stage II heads and cam. HHP's stage 3 setup for the 5.7 is making 432 rwhp...so with that being said a 392 with heads and cam will make well over 430hp..
