I just picked up my new-to-me '06 Magnum SRT8 from a fellow forum member on Sunday, and all I can say is WOW! What a badazzz vehicle! (Thanks 88Notch!)

It doesn't need any attention mechanically, but since I do all of my own work on my vehicles I have a question regarding the fasteners (nuts, bolts, screws) used on these cars. Are they all metric, or a combination? If a combination, are they logically grouped :spock:(all engine hardware in SAE, all suspension in metric, etc)? Or is it haphazard and I just have to get ALL my tools out and guess?:banghead: The family and I are planning a lo-o-ong trip in it, and I want to take the appropriate selection of tools.

Thanks in adv. for any guidance!

I haven't seen (either in my workings for in how-to's) and standard, it seems that everything is metric.

Just about everything is metric. There are a few SAE bolts on the engine at the bell housing, but 98% of the car is metric.

The lug nuts are 13/16"

actually theyre not. TSB # 22-003-07
DISCUSSION:
When removing the wheel lug nuts on LX vehicles, a 21 mm socket must be used. If an
incorrect socket size is used, such as 22 mm or 7/8 inch socket, damage to the nuts will
occur. This damage includes deformation of the lug nut corners, and, for capped lug nuts,
cap swelling, cap loosening or cap fall off. Also, if the lug nuts are deformed in this
manner, the lug nut wrench supplied with the vehicle may not be usable when changing a
flat tire.

anyway. most of the car is metric. like already mentioned. some of the bellhousing bolts are SAE.
most common sizes will be 7, 8, 10, 13, 15, 18 and 21 mm. as well as 9/16" and 5/8"

I think that I have used 16mm a bit, also. I think that it was on the suspension.

thats right. upper shock bolts are 16mm on the rear.

Excellent! Thanks for the help guys. I prefer working in metric sizes because it means a much smaller quantity of tools needed. Now I can start assembling my take-along tool kit, although with as much room as I have to play with I won't have to skimp on much.

Now, for that spare tire...

the spare is a compact for crash protection. police packaged cars have full size spares, but they're mounted differently.

now if we want to add other sizes needed. (Just for you jonn lol.)
T30 for the trans pan, 42mm for the pinion nut, 32 (?) for the axle nuts. 14mm Hex for the axle plugs, 10mm hex for the steering wheel. ok, i give up....

While we're talking odd sizes, E12 for taking the seatbelt off the passenger seat at the track. And E14 for taking the rear cover off the Differential, and removing the hubs from the rear knuckles.

And get yourself a motorcycle tire lever. I use that joker all the time.

Also, some sort of trim tool - one of those angled forks, like a small pickle fork for popping trim rivets.

32mm socket for the rear hub nuts and a 36mm for the fronts.

(I tried to start this thread when I was a noob, to know what I would need, and it never took off. Happy to try to contribute to this one. :thumbs_u:)

Thanks again, y'all. I was being tongue-in-cheek about that spare tire thing, I had read a couple of threads recommending a spare off an AWD version LX, along with a wheel spacer.

As for the torx bits, etc., I've got most, if not all of ,that already, to work on the BMWs I have.
BTW, what is it about the Germans and weak front suspension design? I had hoped I was getting away from all that nonsense... Oh well, I'll just have to console myself with POWER!
Serriously though, I am in love with this car-and so is my wife, and my son, and my buddies, and my wife's boss... Can't wait to take it on the ROAD TRIP!:pepper:
