Someone mentioned that these were a common problem in our cars. What sayeth the masses? 85,000 kms and both are having to be replaced.

They are speaking the truth.
I have 48,000 miles on my car and the inner passenger tie rod was bad. Because these cars have a tendency to wear out the OEM inner tie rods and outer tie rod ends, I went ahead and replaced all 4
(both inners and both outers) with Moog parts. Much better quality than the OEM parts. I hope to not have to replace them again.

I'm on my third set, Factory went at 27K Mi, replacement set at 43K mi, and now I am running REM ones, hopefully I'll get some decent life out of them. Until this spring (when the REM ones went on I was on the factory 18s, with 5000mi on 255/55.
