View Full Version : Sudden rash of broken "HARDEND" shafts

Well I was at the track last nite and again and the result has been the same for the past 3 weeks. ANOTHER broken shaft by Big AL . I have been at track and witness to rash of broken shafts between my two comrades
Between Jason and AL... the count is 5... its getting scary. What is the difference between their cars and mine.... gears and LSD.
Well that was until yesterday...as now I have a quaife.
I dare say there are not but a handful of cars that have been out on the track and have as many hard launches as BIG AL, Jasons and mine in the past year.
What gives ? Well other than the shaft... ?

Nice to hear you finally got the Quaife...

I am now thinking (as I believe Cam has earlier stated)...
When you break an axle you MUST replace the Quaife.
Sad and very expensive.

It almost seems like a bad batch of steel lately. My early DSS's are still going strong on 1Fst4Dr's SRT8.

So, how does the Detroit True Trac fare when an axle breaks?
How has USCG Charger (Jason) done after the initial breakage @ ATCO?

I broke the next time out but that was with the heat treated axles.. I'll be running the new upgraded axles at zmax.. I'm sure they will be fine.... Bill is also going to look at my true trac and make sure there are no issues with it either.

UJ, do you stall yours at launch? Does Big Al? We know Jason does the hammer launch, which is certainly tougher on the driveline.

The Detroit truetrac immediately disengages.
That said, I will change Jasons out next week before zMAX and have his Truetrac magnafluzed.
Dan, I will upgrade you to 3oom at no cost, give me a 10 days or so.

I could use them before the Mopar Meet @ E'town on the 15th.
Can you get then to me by the Monday 05/11/09?
I think if I remove the front sway bar & lower the rear tire pressure, a 3000 RPM stall will get me 1.6s (on motor) in the 60'
It was wheel hopping when I tried the 3000 stall @ ATCO. I'm hoping softer tires & more weight transfer from removal of the front swaybar will hook it up.
In the past, my car always ran it's best times w/a max stall when I could get it hooked.

I don't want to high jack thread but, since we're talking about axles. Has anyone broken an axle on a near stock R/T with drag radials?
Thanks

Sorry for the jack James.
CR, I beat the crap out of mine for a looong time with some decent HP before they finally broke. A semi stock RT, no worries at all.

It seems if you want to get a Quaife LSD..... you should also get upgraded axles to protect the Quaife.
It will be nice when we have enough data on the new Mopar axles to see how they rate.
The price for the Mopar axles are way more affordable. Then you can afford a Quaife or just go with the new Mopar diff also.
Then you get the clutch style LSD (errr..what is it called?).....complete stronger differential for less than Quaife.
....

Whatta ya mean you fouling plugs James?. Specific cylinders?? or all of them.

Cam - I am willing to bet that James has a few pistons that look like Daves.

He had some issues last fall at Atco, and as I recall never pulled the heads to check the pistons.

Most everyone that has a quaife has the upgraded DSS shafts
Others are getting the GETRAG

At ATCO in NOV 2008 I fouled both plugs in #3 cylinder
At VMP 3 weeks ago I fouled both plugs in # 5 and 1 plug in 7 was going bad.
Today... just driving back home from a trip I had stopped at the 7-11 I noticed some backfire... about 30 minutes later... i seemed to have gone away.
I did not notice any backfire at the track on Friday. I ran 4 times each time pretty consistant around a 7.50 @ 95 mph the 1/8 track.
I looked in check engine code today and usual P300 random misfire and got a P308 misfire in cylinder 8.
I will have the dealership check it before I head for ZMAX on Saturday.

I sure hope not as it was scoped out after each epsiode and nothing was found except for the fouled plugs.

The only bad that is James has those junk mahle piston in his build..... man I pray that is nothing serious james..... You need to stop running that stupis water/meth tune.. thats whats fockin ur plugs up bro!

Same tune during all plug fouling issues?
Could be a simple fix my man.
Did you say Big Al has a quaife? Seems the gear change exceeds the limits of the DSS axle. Time for DSS to upgrade or atleast add a second tier axle for those high HP cars that are going to change gear ratio.

Gosh....seems extreme for some 1.6x 60' times. I was hitting 1.6x 60's all day at ATCO....on a sidewinder and 3.06 open diff.:caveman:

James if I remember correctly, didn't you blow out the dipstick????. Get a compression check done bud.

Well as I recall you closed up the gap on the plugs at Atco and puffed out the dipstick and were getting the minibackfires through the exhaust.
I maybe wrong but.....

With < 26" drag radials?
If so that means you had about a 3.33 efective FDR compared to my 3.23.
Combine a 60' like you get W/the top end that my combo generates & that will be in the 11s.
