C2M2 was approached by a student in high school who has the assignment to lead a major project during his senior year. He selected two things that are special to him and is working to do something great with them. One is cars J and the other is Austin Safe Place (http://www.safeplace.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Homepage).
Safe Place is an organization here in central Texas that helps Mothers and their children escape violent home situations.
Did you know that in 2007 alone, shelter programs in all of Texas housed 16,968 children and 12,356 adults, yet 10,407 adult survivors in need of shelter were turned away?
Texas Heat Wave organizer (David MacDonald) is coaching Luis (Del Valley high school student) in how to organize a show and is event sponosoring the advertising, so it is not totally amature.
I spoke to Luis and he has about 50 spots allocated for us. That is not all of the spots he has, though he wants to limit it so that it is not overcrowded and has a diverse mix of vehicles. Entry fees have not been finalized yet, but I think we are talking about $15-20 donation per car. I think we could get 50 cars if we can call on our Mopar kin (DFW, Alamo City, Coastal Bend and SCLX) for support on this. The show is at his school near Austin Bergstrom Int'l Airport, so it should be convenient for visitors to get to.
The teacher that is in charge of senior projects, went into the hospital this past week so I asked him to have a counselor get in touch with me just so we could discuss what is going on. He said he already has a letter signed by his principal that is being provided to the sponsors as proof of this being legit.
I use to know one of the administrators for Safe Place and they have their busiest times when the economy is unstable. I feel that now is the time to act and we can act by doing something we enjoy doing anyway. Let's get together, show the cars and spend the afternoon socializing while we support a good cause. Maybe even go to dinner after the show.
So to continue this, how many people really think they would participate in this? We’d love to see you out of towners join us and show the power of the Texas Mopars! J
