View Full Version : Caliper Covers on - Come and hate if you must

Put on my new caliper covers - and yes I decided to have Viper machined on them to match the wheels.
My overall thought - NOT WORTH IT! These are so overpriced. The are extremely flimsy and deformed from the tac welds on the rear if you look at them in a certain angle. I think they may be worth $75 - but I GOT to rock them now with the change I dropped on them. I'm still on the market for a big brake kit, just wanted something to cover up the ugly stock calipers - I am not trying to fake the funk by any means.
But I guess they do their job.
I really wish they would have extended the side down the caliper a little - it only covers the face of the caliper and none of the side.

Two questions... 1) There's really tack weld on the back of these? I thought they were machined billet - i.e. all one piece. If they're piecing them together w/ welds, The price should reflect that! And 2) Viper, really? I respectfully disagree w/ that decision :-)

MGP caliper covers are constructed from 6061-T6 aerospace aluminum. The aluminum is heat treated to a T6 condition and it is not flimsy – in fact it is rigid.
The bridges are TIG (tungsten inert gas) welded. TIG is used for a precise high quality weld with 80% penetration. You will see small heat effected zones due to the penetration of weld in a localized area. TIG welding is far superior to spot welding. Tack welding is a term used by welders to “tac” two pieces in place to verify placement before commencing with weld bead. MGP caliper covers are not “tac” welded, but lap welded in a precise positioned weld fixture to insure consistency and repeatability.
All materials are first class from the aluminum, to the stainless steel fasteners to the powder coated finish.
MGP warrantees the product for 3 years from manufactured defects.
I think those Viper covers will bring a lot of attention.

Hey guys just to CLEAR THE AIR here!
I dont hate these caliper covers - I think they look much better than painted calipers and I actually enjoy the look they give to my car.
My complaint is that for what they are they are overpriced, that's it.
I will get some much better pictures this weekend at the World of Wheels!!

I am just going to throw this out there... Maybe you have done this already but could you show some pictures of the back on the units. To show off the welds on this items. That would help with all the questions... I think...
BTW... They look good on the car but I would have to agree with one of the other members about the Viper thing... not liking that...

I am not trying to fake the funk by any means.
Am i reading this statement correctly? I'm sorry to say this but, when you stick on some cheap "caliper covers" trying to pose a "big brake" kit.... you are Faking the Funk!!
I mean thats like painting your stock single piston calipers and putting on a Brembo sticker!!! Any real car guy, knows your frontin...dont become the butt of someone elses joke. Save your money and buy the real deal!!! just my opinion.
I also wanted to add... i think your car really looks good!! one of the best vanilla's ive seen... the vipers and drop make it look tuff... but, the caliper covers dont do it any good in my opinion.

IMO this is not like trying to make your stock calipers look like a brembo......"faking the funk" would be going on ebay and getting the replica brembo caliper covers that are made to look like them, with brembo written on them........this is simply making the calipers look nicer behind the wheel both when the car is in motion and stopped, verses painting the stock ones over and over and over again.........because they are bigger then the stocks, I see how people can take it as a "wannabe big brake", but others can say any 5.7 or 6.1 charger, magnum, or 300 is a "wanna be" sports car with 4 doors......I didnt get mine in red mainly so its more obvious im not trying to look like a big brake kit
this is 100% called "faking the funk" and can be found all over ebay in Red, Black, Silver, and Blue for $20

What your showing is basically the same thing he has on his car...a caliper cover that tries to simulate a multi-piston caliper. The whole purpose of these "caliper covers" is to add a little color, and to make a small ugly stock caliper look like a big multi-piston caliper..whether is said brembo, baer, viper or whatever is not the issue. Its still just a cheap cover that tries to simulate that "big brake look" thats all im sayin. If all your wanting is to make the caliper look better behind the wheel, just paint or powdercoat them. Besides, they dont even look right...you end up with this huge looking caliper and still have a puny stock rotor. again, just my opinion

I agree with ya 100% too Chris, People buy Engine Covers for apperance, Light covers, seat covers, overylays, etc. , We cover everything for apperance and looks, WHY is it a big deal when somebody does this to their brakes , just don't know why the first thought in people's minds are always that somebody is "faking" a big brake kit when your just wanting to improve the looks of your Car.

I guess it depends on how the modder wants to look at it........IMO these look nothing like the wanna-be brembos.....the brembos above, have the sculpted "3D" lines like the real caliper, and even have the gold thing at the top........while im not saying some people dont get these with the inentions of simulating big brakes, these covers are very plain and flat, making them look more like covers and not wannabe big brakes

I think they look great .. like everything else on the car! Ok, I lied, I'm not an eyelids fan! LOL j/k
I dont look at it as faking ... the man has a 22 inch rim that shows MORE of the brake system then the stock rim .. IMHO its an appearance mod, you know for enhancement of the vehicles looks ...
If the covers were the size of the stock ones, it would look stupid .. like your calipers had a tumor .. they enlarged it because the guys that would feel self conscious about their brake system will be guys with upgraded wheels on their cars .. stock 18's to 22's .. good for you ..
Save your money on the big brake kit ..

Dude, they look good! Really, as long as you like them, then they are worth the coin. Big brake kits cost money, and to tell you the truth, there are a couple of high HP guys that don’t run BBK’s.
Skippy was right, people cover everything else, why not the brakes?
Are they worth the 2 bills? No I dont think so. If they were $75 - $100 buxs Id rock them on the C!

Caliper covers are not designed to imitate big brake kits (Cept the Ebay's). They just cover the fugly stock system and look better. Not that expensive when you consider the Billet odds and ends we hide under the hood, and don't complain about that.

I think your cars look great with them, I don't like the way our stock brake systems look at all and anything to get away from that is a plus. I don't think having these means your a poser unless you have Brembo or some other companies logo engraved on them. I agree with Skippy and some others that we buy or paint or change all sorts of things on these cars as to our individual taste and trying to make the car look better by covering up those ugly calipers is a good thing. If they were more in my price range I would have them on the C.
