View Full Version : WHEEL STUDS - Group Interest?

I am in touch with a company that can manufacture our exact wheel studs (they supply the big guys)....they are very pricey from the dealer about 16 bucks EACH....
I've already contacted my friend at Carquest and they can not get these
Is there any interest in doing a group buy ....need to know before I contact them again or I'm gonna let this drop.
LXF VENDORS DON't be afraid to step up.

What's your mode of failure? Wear from changing wheels 100 times, or actually breaking them from torque (I seriously doubt it), or ??? If it's inevitable, then I'd pick up a set. If it's a fluke, then it's worth rolling the dice. I think we need more input there before the majority of us can make an educated decision.

T, I would say it's more the racers that are having the issues from constant on/off of tires. We can get them from the dealer at a big price. this company is willing to make the studs... I just want to give them an answer. If they do manufacture, I will work to get them stocked at Carquest.

If it's from swapping wheels too much, then I'll pick up a set, count me in. What kind of minimum up-front quantity are they hoping for?

Todd - I think most of the failures happened for guys that race a lot...and really manifested itself as an issue once temps started dropping.
I'd suggest most of the failures were thread getting borked enough that the torque required to move the nut, unseated the splines/knurl from the wheel assembly. My second one was so bad...first d/r on, DA looking awesome, so needing a personal best run, blah blah blah....that finally Rob Torred and I snapped it with the biggest bar we had (tethered to the jack handle of course)...and luckily i had a spare $16.50 oem one in the travel pack. 20 minutes later good to go.
Anyway...with enough banging twisting, torque, etc....i think we finally compromise the quality of these studs. As a racer I'd suggest 3-5 in anyone's bag. After 3-4 season's may be worth having a rear stud swap and a few extras for track days.
My thoughts anyway - btw, I have 10 in the garage Stell, but great initiative here as always!

I told them (now this is purely guess work on my part) 500 pieces and they will definitely get them into Dorman's catalog

Stell, I only have 1 oem off the car. Rob has a bunch I think. I'll shoot him a note later on in chat too. PM us both the address and we'll get something out to them.

Gotcha. Didn't think we were making enough power to be shearing them yet :-)

Well, count me in for a dozen if they're reasonable. With any luck I'll be seeing more of the track(s) this year than I did last year.

There already exists longer studs that are drop-ins;
I am running 0.75" hubcentrics on the front to deal with rims I wanted, I found wheel studs used on GM 5-tons that required machining their length down ~0.4" (too long). I road-race with them without issue.
There is also a set available for 0.5" thick hubcentrics I use on the back that are also drop-ins. MAGFX came forth with these units.

I installed the studs already so no returns. I'll get a set of 20 today though, so I guess I'm off to look for my track bag and tissues for my nose:)
