Hi. I'm looking to do a twin turbo setup on a motor I just bought.I need to know a few things before I start spending money I dont need to spend. How much boost can the 5.7 hold? I'm throwing away all of the 5.7's internals for all forged. The block isn't at the machine shop yet I'm still waiting on pistons and weather or not to use billet main caps.I've read that the stocks are powdered metal, but then again are the stock mains good? Also what's the weakest link in the motor? Thanks for any input.. Gerry

The weakest link was the pistons.......if your forging the pistons, rods and crank well you should be good for alot......we have not seen a block failure yet. There are some hefty 5.7's out there but nothing to insane......most of the big boost is on the 6.1's and there are a few 900-1000 crank hp cars out there.BTW......get ready to spend 5k on a transmission.

Thanks for the help guys.I should of posted up that the motor isn't going into a dodge. It's going into my 2005 subaru STI. Please don't beat be down :) Had a Twin turbo LS2 motor that made 1100 to the wheels and ended up selling the motor harness and turbos for a nice chunk of change. Now I just want to do something different..

so a rwd subi? ill be damned.
if putting a mopar block in a foreign car aint sin for a dodge dude....
is putting a rwd into an awd sin for a subi? thats like... part of being a subi.. its all about the awd yea?
i guess before stating the above... will you be keeping it awd?
it may not be a dodge body, but its a mopar heart, and ought to be a cool project no less, please keep us updated!

I could of made a adapter plate to mate the 5.7 up to the STI 6 speed but the engine would sit to far forward, it's alot longer and ALOT heavier then the boxer motor. I have custom springs made for the coilovers when I had the ls2 in it.Here's a few pics when I first fit the LS motor in. I have finished ones on my other comp, i'll post them up later.

Ok so how did you get around the OBD2 issues?Or does this only go to the dragstrip?

I ran it on the street. I won't go into the "legal" part or passing state inspections.Just lets say I Own 2 other subarus. The vin numbers arent encoded into the ecu until 2006 model year. Also you can legally do a engine swap that will pass NYSI if you want to deal with all the bs..

You said if I wanted to go through all the BS there was a legal way to do it........just trying to figure out what that might be since you will essentially have two OBD systems in the car.

First it depends:
There are in NY state.
Vehicles that are less than two model years old, or more than 25 model years old (for example, a 1975 model in 2001). and
custom vehicles that are registered in the Upstate Area.
Although they are emissions exempt you need a safety inspection
There are also ways look it up at the US DOT web

There are also ways look it up at the US DOT webWell i live in upstate.......and I can tell you for a fact the NYS Emissions with OBDII is now state wide.So we don't get that nice pass like we used to.......otherwise I wouldn't have asked......So I guess the answer to the question is there is no way to do it legally, and since the car I was thinking of is a 97' I am done.

Just ordered a K1 Technologies stroker crank and rods. Also ordered a set of custom wiseco pistons to bring the compression down to 8.5. Debating on having the billet mains done too. Are there problems with the stock mains?

I think it would depend on how much boost you really want to run. No one has really pushed their car to the limit where mains would come into the picture of failing. If you're going to be dropping all the money into the build, why not do it right the first time IMHO.

I second the doing it right the first time. It's just another 800 I can put into something else.

Well if your building a pretty powerful motor then i would say just do it, youre going to be pretty pissed if you don't do it and down the road thats what fails first.
