for all the current a future 6 speed owners, I have located a remedy to that PITA 1-4 Skip Shift that is strangling our 6 speeds... all in the name of "improved fuel economy"...
Ebay has them under Item # 160295408981 for about $20.00

for those who don't know:
DESCRIPTION

The skip shift solenoid (1) prevents the operator from shifting into second or third gear during part throttle operation. The solenoid is threaded into the left side of the transmission case.
OPERATION
The PCM controls the skip shift solenoid, locking out second and third gear when all of the following conditions are met:
Engine coolant exceeds 41°C (106°F)
Vehicle speed is between 12 and 20 MPH
Engine operating above 1322 RPM
The PCM verified first gear speed/RPM
Throttle position sensor (TPS) signal is less than 0.68 volt above closed throttle (23 percent throttle opening)The solenoid resets when vehicle speed drops below 3 MPH.

Wow. First I've heard of this. That sucks that you buy a 6 speed and it's functionally a 4 speed.
wow thats some bs right there.

Nothing new about it - my buddies '94 Z28 Camaro has this feature, and it annoys the hell out of him...

Yep, this is the third skip shift eliminator I've bought. The other two were for 6-speed Z28s.

it makes you go to 4th instead of second in normal driving.
Real PITA, and been on LOTS of six speed cars. Trying for fuel economy.
All the mod does is give you normal trans operation

Wait a minute. I don't understand how a manual transmission can stop you from putting it in any gear you want. Are you saying if you try to put it in second and all the conditions are met it goes into forth gear? That is retarded.

Steve, I got that part
Let me rephase that. HOW does it do it. I'd think that the stock system locks out the position and guides the shifter into forth instead of second. So now how does the aftermarket unit work??? Just bypasses the solenoid??. If that were the case, couldn't ya just unplug it, or does it have a return signal path or dedicated sensor to the transmission controller.

I got mine from a Corvette vendor, they have been dealing with this issue for years. I believe the 6 speed trans is the same Tremec unit that is in the vettes. The elimnator bypasses the solenoid, the dash light will still come on but you will not be forced into fourth.

Thnx, that's what I wanted to know. So based on that, I'll asume it's nothing more then a cap that plugs onto the wiring harness or in line with it with a resistor that bypasses the solenoid feed to keep the TCM happy with feedback.

My dad's Vette has that crap. Very annoying! I'll have to tell him he can have it disabled for $20. He will get a kick out of that.

Actually I think it has to do with emissions, although I could be wrong. This was the first mod I did to my Firebird when I bought it 12 years ago. I actually ordered the part before I took possesion of the car. And no GM dealer I ever went to griped about the warranty.

The mid 2000 GTOs had the blocker- and the fix is very popular.
Dannyc: It puts a "block" over the shift gate and the natural thing is for you to slide down and to the only open spot, 4th gear.
