Has anyone ever bought a car that only came with one set of keys? Much to my surprise that was the case today. After all the deals were made and the papers were signed it was time for the changing of the keys. He handed me ONE key! I asked him where the other one was. He said that's what happens when you get used cars. I was never told that the car only had one key. I assumed that the car came with 2 keys, so I never even bothered to ask if there were two. Was I wrong?
This is a Chevrolet dealer, not a Dodge dealer.
If this was just a regular key I'd just go make a copy. But according to the manual I need a PIN number just to get a copy. Obviously I don't have the PIN number. Does that mean I will have to get 2 new keys and have them programmed?
Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of action I can take?

Hi there; I also bought a used Dodge, it came with 2 keys with remotes, however the second key is not cut deep enough as the first, so it opens the door and the panic goes off, it starts the car and then quits in 3 seconds. I have heard from a friend that you must go to the dealer to get a key, and that it costs around 100. so I hear, sorry have not heard of any lower price, Mag05

when i bought my preowned magnum, i got 2 keys, a FOB key and a nonFOB key (no buttons on it)...looks like a regular Dodge/Chrysler key from a few years ago. it works fine, and is a cheaper alternative to buying a new FOB key.

I also only got 1 key from the dealer. I purchased one from here, had it cut and programed at the dealer for $34.50
No buttons, but unlocks the doors and starts the car.
This key will set off the alarm, but saves you a tow bill if you lose the expensive one.
Mag05 - Your 2nd key is a door only key. It's not for starting the car. Our company car came new w/ it. You can also get a Valet key which will open the doors, start the car, but not be able to unlock the glovebox, console, or trunk.

I never heard of a "door only" key other than a blank w/o transponder. If Mag05 has 2 keys with fobs but one turns but alarms then that key has been cut but it has not been programmed.

Do you think the dealer that I bought it from would cover it if I told them that my insurance won't cover me because of the other key that's out there? I mean, all the previous owner has to do is call the DMV, give them the plate number and they can give out the address as to where it's registered since it is a public record.

Not here did it matter. I had the previous owners information still in the Nav unit (He lives near me, has a pilots license and smokes cigars, among other things) and they didn't care. Your dealer might be different than mine.
(I didn't catch the part about the alarm going off, our 2nd key only does the doors/trunk. Kinda like a kids key to get stuff outa the car without being able to go anywhere.)

got mines used with only 1 key as well, 2 years later, still have that one key, i been meaning to buy one from ebay and take it to a dealership for cutting and programming..
a door only key is no good to me as i removed the driverside door handle with e key hole and swapped it with a rear handle with no key hole..

I think you got what I was trying to say backwards. I'm not talking about ME having the PREVIOUS owners information. (Thats up to him to delete everything)
Since the car originally came with only 2 keys that will work in the car, it could be a liability issue. All the previous owner would have to do is find out where the car is and he could drive it off since he had the "other" key.

I too, bought a use mag with one key. The dealership wanted almost $200 for the FOB key and programming. I went to another dealership and they told me about the "valet" keys, so I bought two, $5 each! They only open the doors, period, will NOT start the car. But if I lock my keys in there, it's all good!

Hmm I got two of the same keys with my 07'. So let's say I have a Viper key cut the same as the one for the Magnum, it won't work? When I was told about this when my parents got their 05' Caravan I never really believed Dodge would put a sensor in the key to start the car but I guess it's true then, always thought that was a Lexus/BMW/Mercedes thing.

If you lock the car with the keyfob button, and then insert the key to unlock it, the alarm will sound regardless of which key you unlock it with.

That sucks. Mine came with two complete keys and two remote start remotes. I bought it used.

i got 2 remote keys luckily.
I just bought my 06 Charger SE in the middle of September. During the dealing I said, "By the way, I want 2 keys and an owners manual as part of any deal we make." The salesman said, "Of course, all cars come with 2 keys." Well, that turned into a BIG problem for them later on.
You see, since my wife and I have owned late model Chrysler products, we knew about the chip-in-the-key thing, and with Chrysler remote keyless entry cars that the remote IS part of the key. As far as an owners manual, each car comes with one, so if the used car doesn't have it, I'll expect them to get it for me.
After all the paperwork was done, I was handed my key. So I asked about the other key and the owner's manual. The owner's manual was no problem, it was out in the glove box.
"Ah, I don't think we got another one with this car.",
I say, "Yeah, so?"
He hedges, "You know that's like a $200 key?"
"That's why I made sure to bring it up before." I reply.
At this point, he assures me he will look for it, and that he thinks the original owner still has it. He'll get back to me as soon as possible.
The next day, I had to call the business manager (finance guy) about the paperwork. I mentioned that I hadn't heard from the salesman about the key, which I pointed out, was part of the "deal". He told me that he would make sure that I would get my key.
It took a few days, but according to the salesman, he had to wait for the previous owner to drop it off on the way home from work. It was obviously the key the owner used all the time, worn, scratched, well used.
All cars come with 2 keys, & keyfobs if needed. If buying used, make sure you mention it in the dealing that no matter what, you expect 2 keys. Most salesman, hot for the deal, think of it as a little detail, so they quickly agree, not remembering that you're talking about a $200 item in this case. Otherwise, the dealer might take the position of the car is sold "as is". Then, you're SOL.

When I bought my Mag in 06 new, I was given only one key. I asked the salesman about another key and he tried to talk me out of it. I insisted and he reluctantly went to the service deptment and came back with another FOB key. And he didnt charge me for it.

The same exact thing happened to me, twice! When I bought my previous "dodge certified" R/T it came with one key. When they delivered one key to me I called BS and they said there was nothing they could do, it only came with one key. The funny thing was, if you read the "words" in the dodge broucher for "certified" cars it comes with two--so I won that battle.
When I bought my SRT, the same thing happened (you think I would have asked based on my last experiance--slow learner), but since the car wasn't certified I couldn't make them give me another one. However, I finaly got them to conceed some and I paid their cost ($100) for a new key and they cut and programmed it for free.

I got two keys with my Mag that was used. I only thought I was getting one, but the salesman came out with the second... Then just last week I took that piece of crap half a$$ed installed aftermarket remote starter out and got another free key! It was an exact match to the originals. Fob and all. Some poor soul spent a lot of money on a shoddy remote start job.

One of the first things I ask about a used vehicle when I'm serious about buying it. I even go out and check that they are the right ones and work. I'm weird I guess. If they want to sell the car they'll cough up another key if it's not there. :)

I got my lease return-used Magnum with the 2 original keyfob combo keys. One of them looks like it was never used. they both work and are cut the same though. I also bought a blank sentry key off ebay like I had with my Intrepid. If you have 2 keys you can program a 3rd right in your ignition, otherwise you will have to buy a blank key and have it programmed at your dealer. So if you only got one key ...kinda makes you wonder where the other one is doesn't it? Hopefully you won't come out one morning and see an empty spot where your car was parked the night before.

when i was signing everything on my car i asked the salesman if a second key will be cut and included and he said "Of course" Little to my surprise show up to pick up the car and only 1 key. So of course after several calls and no responses I had to get my Viper installed which needed 2 key fobs. So Had to find one that day went to Dodge and $211 later I was getting my Viper installed. Damn the dealers. They always BS everything. I wish I would have had time to buy a key off of Ebay.

pretty sure you can buy FOB keys on ebay. your dealer can erase all programmed keys, cut a new key and program both the existing key and the new key.

That is if the car has an alarm system...I don't think mine does

How does the dealer program new keys... Starscan?
using starscan/starmobile and a vehicle specific PIN code, the tech can put the WCM (wireless control module) into programming mode.

I still have my 2nd Magnum key. (holding it ransom for the extra Charger key) Anyway, is it at all possible to replace the key part and have it cut and re-programmed to my Charger?

I wouldn't drive off the lot without the 2nd key, so they had to make one.
Time ot order a third off EBay, and think about battery replacement at 3 years.

once a key has been programmed to a vehicle, it cannot be reprogrammed to any other vehicle.
