Being that Ernie has stolen my car I needed a new project. So after having a new shed installed I finally managed to completely clear out my garage. Now I can put the wife's 300C inside as well (she has been after me for months to do this). Today I am power washing and prepping the floor. Tomorrow I am going to lay down grey Epoxy paint with the color chips. I am doing one side this weekend and the other during the week.
I am going to install 4 / 2 bulb four foot long fluorescent lights as well. Now the question is what to do with the walls? Just paint? Peg board? Cork board?
Anyone see anything different out and about? Suggestions?

Nice... good for you... but don't ask me, my garage is a mess! LOL I keep my 06 Mag SRT8 and my 89 Turbo Gran Prix with 7K miles, (this was the pace car from the movie, DAYS OF THUNDER), in the garage along with all my other junk!

I say peg board so that you can use it to store some of your tools. But, that's just me.

Look into peg board paneling. Or you could hang regular peg board vertically and paint it.I had the paneling on one wall at one time,it worked well and looked good also. If you think you want to hang cabinets, I've seen a way to do it with a track system that works well. With the "home made" track system ,I think you can use any kind of cabinets.

Do you think the floor will be dry enough to paint tomorrow?

Not sure with the high humidity today. I'm running a couple of heaters (with safty circuits) over night. I'd like to apply it by noon. If not I'll wait until Monday.

I thought about hanging tools but afraid one may fall and then X%@#^&!
I have a locking (I have two young sons that like to take things apart) 3 section Craftsman tool cabinet on wheels for my tools. I'm going to buy a locking full height cabinet on wheels to replace the open rack I have now. This way I can keep all my car related items in that with out worrying about stuff falling.

Man, I am dealing with the same issue and have not been able to decide what I am going to put on the side and back walls. I thought about T-10 siding going into the sides of the garage and the same half way up the back wall and the top half in beg board. BTW, be sure the floor cracks, chips and imperfections are addressed before the epoxy becasue I didn't and it shows every ding on the floor.

A couple of years ago I ran across jet black peg board at Home Depot. The floor epoxy is medium gray with blue, black and white chips. I think the black peg board would look great. Then I want to find some old school mopar signs and stuff to hang on the walls. Maybe even a old school coke machine! Maybe paint the ceiling in light grey as well.

Fortunately my house is only 13 years old the garage floor is still near perfect. I had a few small chips that I filled last week. Today I use commercial strength degrease, Power washed and rinsed it. Then I used floor etching stuff and power washed and rinsed again. So I hope I wind up with good results.

What ever you do on the walls, I would suggest keeping them white, or very light in color. Putting darker coloring on the walls will really make the garage darker than you want. The lighter color will reflect light and make for a brighter work area.

I agree but I'm not to concerned because of the amount of fluorescent lighting going in. I found this stuff called Fashion Wall at Lowes this morning. Its perforated metallic panels in a brushed stainless finish. I am going to use it to cover the first 4' up from the floor and then paint the top of the walls and ceiling in a light blue to match the chips in the floor paint. Should look pretty good when its done.

Hmmm...Lowes huh? I plan on re-doing the back part of the shop and I was going to put polished diamond plate on the lower portion of the walls. How big are the panels at Lowes Fred?

Ernie,
The panels come in 4' x 8' sheets. They are not available at Lowes in Howell, the one on RT70 in Brick by Home Depot has them in stock. Very cheap at $20 a sheet. They are in the paneling section in Lumber.

What kind of paint is used for the floor of the garage?

Good timing.....take some pics of the epoxy - what brand are you using?

Emptied my garage out this weekend as well...painted the walls and trim, what a difference. The one side where my workbench is - I had old wood peg board as well as some newer resin/plastic above the workbench. I went ahead and painted the old pegboard to FRESHEN it up.

Spent most of last night doing search after search for the garage floor.

Like you - i'll do it in two stages so I can keep everything in the garage while finishing.

I've done concrete stain and a cheaper epoxy before - both (even with etching and careful prep) have shown signs of scuffing.

My buddy did his 8 months ago and now has 8 spots bare where the hot tires rest.

Not sure what the answer is....unless it's the $500 epoxy variety...

I'll be looking forward to hearing how you make out...it really does look good and makes things easy to keep clean!

I used Rust-Oleum EPOXYShield Garage Floor Coating
Here is the link:
http://www.rustoleum.com/Product.asp?frm_product_id=56&SBL=1

You need 2 kits at $65 each (one kit per one car garage)
The Peg board is going to be pre-finished.

Here a few pics of the left side of garage floor finished. I used a 3/4" nap 9" roller on a extension handle. Trimmed the edges with a 3" brush first. 1 gallon kit covers 250 Sq. ft. or the average one car garage. To make sure I would get equal coverage I divided the floor into 3rds with a pencil mark on the wall. I then poured 1/3 of a gallon at a time in the pan and used that portion to paint 1/3 of the floor. I applied the color chips after I painted each 1/3 of the floor. It calls for drying time of 12 to 24 hours for light foot traffic and recommends a 7 day curing process before you put a car or any other heavy object on it. Keep in mind that if you are going to do this now is the time because it can only be applied at a temp. of 60 degrees or higher. Thats why I did the floor first when I would normally do it last.

Looking good. Is it difficult to spread the chips evenly? I always think that I would get them too heavy in some areas and not enough in others.

I was worried about that also but I took a two finger pinch full and starting in one corner thew them up in air. Repeated that process until each are was covered to my liking. The I took a step back and looked for any places that looked light and did the same thing for that one spot. Just don't work a section larger than 1/3 of a single garage floor at a time so you can get to all areas with the chips. You will get some areas with more chips then another but it's an abstract application anyway so it will all blend in.

Here's mine. I like everything hidden. The lighting is 8 4 x 2 recessed flourescent panels. Just posting, so you have additional ideas.

Some of the conveniences are heater (68 degrees all Winter), all cabinets for lawnmower, snowblower, tools and washing supplies, ice maker, small fridge, washer/dryer, sound system, phone and cable TV. All the wiring was concealed in the attic.

Yours looks like it is coming along nice, too.

And for those wondering, the flooring is Race Deck.

Thanks for the post and ideas. How are your floor tiles holding up? They are the interlocking type correct? No tire depressions in them? I almost went with them. Heater is some thing I have to get by next winter can't do it this year. I have to get two cars in my garage and it doesn't leave any room for a work bench. So I'm going to improvise and build a folding bench on the rear wall. I have just enough room to keep 2 cabinet and my roll around tool cabinet so I keep all my auto related stuff in the garage. I had to move all my landscape stuff and snow blower into the new shed. I have a place in the garage for the snow blower so if the weather calls for snow I can move it into the garage. Last year I used the snow blower once, a 3" snow was it for the year! My utility room is behind the rear wall of the garage so when I do the heater running the gas line will be easy. After I finish the floor next week I want to paint before the weather gets to cold and then install the wall panels anytime after to finish up. I want to pick up some the old mopar signs that I see around the car shows to hang on the walls.
