Who purchased there 2.7 even though they were aware of the history of these motors. I purchased mine then later I found out the history. I was always a honda man. Now I have too many mods to even think of trading for a 3.5L, I guess I am lucky, I have the 7/70k extended warranty and lifetime powertrain. I do have free lifetime oil changes from the dealer too.

Maybe I am just overreacting. Just wanted my fellow members input.

The issues with the 2.7 are related to the previous generation of cars - called the LHs, not the LXs like we have. Even for the LH cars, the issues of sludge etc were seemingly resolved after the 2001 model year. Your engine is fine - enjoy the car :)

Appreciate the response.

Even though they are LH vs LX, they are the exact same motor.

Appreciate the response.

Even though they are LH vs LX, they are the exact same motor. Not true......the block went through a bunch on internal changes to solve the problem they were having with small oil passage ways....My mom had the Intrepid which had the problem she had the motor changed under warranty the motor looks nothing like mine.....

I loved your car when I saw it at the D&B this past weekend. Beautiful job on the murdered out look.

I also bought my 300 without really looking at all the different models. I thought there was only a base and a C and looking at the way gas prices was going up, I thought, "looks good and economical, I'm getting the 2.7".

Now that I know there are other options, I might have gone with a touring or more, but in the end, I bought the car for looks. I still love the way it looks, even though I don't have the power to 'race'.

My car is an '05 and has 89k miles now and I bought it used at around 79k. I've already done a tune up and my mechanic was impressed that the only thing I needed to do was change the air filter and the spark plugs. Everything else was in great shape.

If your worried use good synthetic oil and change it by the book, bet it will last hundreds of thousand miles. Very cool 300 BTW. Toyota had the sludge problem also.

My uncle and cousin have had a bunch of Intrepids over the years (cousin's ex always wrecked them) and many had 200,000+ miles on them with no problems. All they ever did were regular 3,000mi oil changes with (get this) Wal-Mart oil and filters.

I have an 05 mag with 75k miles and have had no problems at all! Runs like new. Just change your oil and remember you dont have a hemi so dont try to race the ricers chances are you will lose anyway. Of course these cars are the only cars I have seen recently that still look cool when you lose! Gotta love it!

That is true, the Toyota v6 of the same vintage was as bad, if not worse. But, being Toyota, it did not much to tarnish the image, but Chrysler was naturally considered junk because of that. Both companies have fixed the problems and the newer than 2000 model 2.7 are fine. There is nothing wrong with using the synthetic though (except the cost) :beerchug:

Appreciate the assurance guys. As well as the comps. on my car.

Afraid to say the tail lamps are stock again, front tint removed as well as the front light covers.

Too many fix it tickets = too many headaches.

I guess it costs to be the boss. I will leave that to someone else in the time being.

I have 110.000 miles on my 2,7 (2005 Chrysler 300 STW) and no worries. I have been using Kendall GT-1 20W50 during summer and Kendall 0W40 during winter, and no problems so far.

Actually the issues were mostly resolved before 2001. The 98's & 99's are where most of the problems were. Then the press blew everything wayyyyy out of proportion. For every blown engine, there were probably a 100 or more that went over 100k with no problem. I had a 2001 Intrepid with the 2.7 and it was one tough engine. I hammered on it just about every day for 5 years I had it and the engine and tranny were still
running strong at 110k. I used Mobil 1 10W-30 every 3000 miles. I can't stress enough.... USE A SYNTHETIC OIL ONLY. It will keep your engine cleaner. Now 1 thing you will have to keep an eye on is the water pump when you start getting high mileage. I had the pump replaced at around 100k. Otherwise, these are pretty tough engines when taken care of properly.

yea, 2.7s are not as bad as they are made out to be. The most problematic years were the 98-00, there was an engine redesign in 2001 (for the LHs), IIRC they were again redesigned for the lx cars. There is someone on the LHforums with 200,000+ miles on his 2.7 with no problems yet.

i got my 08 knowing the history of the 2.7 but all that does not matter now that dodge is backing ll the rummors with a lifetime powertrain, and the only thing u have to do is take it in every 5 years for an inspection.... so i mean at this piont 2.7 owners could care less about the rummors......

Man......

I bought my Magnum thinking there was the big V6 and then the Hemi. This is what happens when you go look at one car and they show you something else. lol. I got good service from the 3.3 (except broken rocker boss) lets see how the 2.7 DOHC goes.

Big issue with the previous generation of 2.7L was that the oil gallies returning the oil to the crankcase were too small and didn't take much to clog up. Ours should be A OK #1. Chrysler fixed that issue after replacing all those engines.

yeah from what hear our engines are better(i hope) but ur car does look great

i think so also, i mean for what our cars cost brand new 22,000 compared to the other cars that cost the same like a 2.5L altima, or a standard camery SE, ford turus etc.... im satisfied by far with my dodge.... those the others dont stand a chance when you put rims on a LX

My 2.7 failed in my Intrepid. Have yet to hear of any LX 2.7 having this issue. It was mostly found on pre-2002 models. You shouldn't have anything to worry about regarding that issue anymore.

I was a Nissan guy myself, i read about the history and got an 08 its been great so far, i just can't bring myself to get a V8 American car its too much too fast, its bad enough i skipped two car sizes with this purchase, i'm still getting used to the excess road presence.

to hell with high gas prices, v-8 insurance prices, and the other crap that comes with high horse power ---wanna be daily drivers. i purchased my 08 maggie with the 2.7 because i wanted a DAILY DRIVER, that looks nice. the only mods that i am doing that increase performance are going to be to improve looks. I LOVE MY JUST FAST ENOUGH 2.7 MAGGIE. IF THE MOTOR GOES I AM REPLACING IT WITH ANOTHER 2.7

I bought my 2.7 this November knowing the history and lack of power. I was out specifically for the Stone White 2008 Maggy and could only find it in the 2.7. Besides the off the line lack of power I am super happy with it! I would be a very happy camper if somehow I can add another 30 HP and reduce the hickup off the line. But her.... that's just me!

I bought my 2.7 liter '05 Maggie about 5 months ago and haven't looked back. It's got 97,000 miles on it and it looks like it's always been serviced on time.

I did do some research on the sludge issue and found that it hasn't been an issue since before 2001. I was actually shopping for a 3.5, but this one was very underpriced so I couldn't pass it up. Love the car.

To the OP, that's a bad ass 300

So, it's pretty safe to say that one shouldn't buy a 2.7 LX used without proper oil change interval documentation?

deontae1987
02-09-2010, 04:39 PM
i wouldn't buy any car without the proper documentation, but i got my 08 charger se brand new back in 08 so i dont have to worry about that issue. haven't had any issues, but even if i do have problems down the line i have the lifetime powertrain so i could care less..... i mean for the money who wants a nissan altima or a Camry or any car in the 20k market brand new? our cars look the best in its price class hands down the car turns heads constantly

When I was first looking for a Magnum I was gonna pick up a 2.7 for the price, then a mechanic friend of mine told about about the bad history of the 2.7. And I skipped an engine and went for a Hemi. I can't say that I'm not happy, but lets just say I don't have to move from where I am to be happy. ;-)

my wife has a murdered out 06 magnum with the 2.7...........no issues whatsoever. 80K on motor. I originally found these cars on accident. Seen one in a car flyer and pushed it on my wife cuz its a "wagon family car" lol. I purchased the black SE for me not caring what motor was in it, just loved the way it looked. I didnt get to drive it much after bringing it home. It has become my wifes favorite car ever........(close tie would be a charger) We've had over 40"s of snow this winter and temps as dipping into the -30's.......still no issues. the thing gets around great.

Mine is now a 05 RT maggie that gets no were but is still fun to drive. I like the rumble of the hemi and have not cracked into the speed bug yet. I still like just looking at my wifes all black maggie.

I purchased my charger about two yrs ago and have only had the water pump go out.Which was covered by the extended warranty. I have 53k on it and have had no problems. I bought her for the looks and not the HP, but would have loved the Hemi, but insurance here in Vegas is outrageous and I have a clean record.. Wouldn't change a thing.
