View Full Version : Tire Options for LX Not Up To Par

Venting time (I hope this topic is in the right category seeing as we don't have a "Venting" section per se).

Is it just me or does selection of tires for the LX truly just suck?

We can't ride any of the really good stuff, ie. Firehawk Wide Ovals, F1 GS-D3, Mich Pilots, Potenzas etc. etc.

Running on 20"s w/ Toyo Proxes 4 in 275/40 all around now. They are all- seasons. Need a good set of summers for some spirited driving.

Looking at all different tire size combinations in order to find a really good tire and am still feeling a bit blahhhh...

My Toyo Proxes 4 soles (pun intended) will be do for a new life soon. Looks like I'll just replace them.... or I could wear a summer truck shoe in a Bridgestone Dueler. hhmm.

I guess more research will uncover news, what do you think of the tire choices we have? Anyone have something to recommend?

Have you looked at Pirelli's like the Pzero?

T, Yes and the survey results from Tirerack (5 million miles reported) say never buy them again. I'm adrift with no "shoes" for my "whip". That was good idea though:wink:.

The new Nitto NT 555 are getting some good reviews.

Same problem with the Nittos as we do with the other hi-performance tires as they are all low profile, and wide. Would have to size up from a 20" rim... The 20s are big as it is, I don't know if I'm prepared to go bigger. But that seems to be the tradeoff.

Both good ideas, thanks guys.:beerchug:

My bad, forgot your SRT is on 20"s ... When my BFG KDW2's wear out I'll be looking at these Nittos but in 255-45-18 which ain't too bad a profile.

T, The Invos are a good suggestion, the right size, and high performance too. I need to do some more research on these. They do look spacey cool don't they with that futuristic tread design?

Cad, That BFG KDW2 is a really good tire. At 255-45-18 you have a great selection of hi-performance tires including Eagle F1 GS-D3 (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+F1+GS-D3&partnum=545YR8F1GSD3XL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=8)s (which is what I would love to use).

If I go down in rim size to 18" or even 19" or even if I go up in size to 21" or , eke... 22" my selection of tires more than triples and it includes all the really good stuff.

The 20" rims look great on the mag but the accompanying tire selection does not. I am considering new rims too now. Getting 18" or 19" rims is an idea (I'd have to check the brake clearances). The 22" is a little too urban. If I size down to an 18" or 19" I would not only get a selection of hi-performance tires I like, there's also the benefit of having some sidewall (shock-absorbtion, ride comfort, lighter unsprung weight, etc. etc.)

Anyone ever start modding a car starting at the tires and building up around them? I may. LOL

Thanks for the great input guys :). It really helps to get intelligent feedback like this, love it!

I run Dunlop SP Sportmaxxx. I think they are excellent tires. $$ vs. performance.

Not quite as sticky as the F-1s but they wear MUCH better, Cant hear them at all and ride quality is tops... I just bought a set to go on my Mag, havent got them on the road yet but soon...

Quoting JMATT's post from over on the "Connection (http://www.srtconnection.com/forums/showpost.php?p=35242&postcount=13)"

For the record, I've spoken dozens of times with the personnel out at the Toyo/Nitto plant.

The Toyo Proxes 4 and the Nitto INVO are made on the same line, and have the same specs. Toyo and Nitto are the same company. Well - Toyo owns the Nitto brand. Both company's reps will admit that the Nitto INVO comes with stickier tread compound than the Proxes 4.

I have the Toyo's, but only because the Nitto's weren't available yet the last time I had to replace my tires.

I believe the Nitto INVO has the same tread compound as the racier Toyo T1R.

My source was direct conversations with the factory.

I've had the Toyo Proxes plus 4's for some time now and I think they are a great all around tire. The Nittos need some temp to get that traction they promise, so northern clients ought to take care. The Proxes plus 4's are a true all season, though, so there should be a grippier choice.

But being dirt cheap, really sticky, and wearing like iron ain't all bad!

Formerice, the Vred's seem to me to hard to research have you seem them on any tire dealer websites with reviews?

Fireman, the Sportmaxx is a great tire but from what I can find they are not made in 275/40/20, what size are you running? This may go back to my idea of new tires to justify new rims:)

Daniel, I am gathering info on the Invos and they are building a strong case for themselves. Thanks much for the great info.:)

Grounded, thank you for the recommendation, what size are you running?

nhDave, got it:)

Steve, I've had the Proxes 4 for awhile now too, but the next set I'm geting will be "summer" tires the Proxes 4's are all-seasons. See if I get more traction with a single purpose tire. We'll see how that goes right:blam:. LOL

Does anyone have experience with the Bridgestone Dueler Sport because they are about the same price as the Invos in the sizes? An no comments about Bridgestones flipping over Ford Exploders either that was when an Englishmen was running Ford (sorta american co).

What about the General Grabber UHP? 320 AA and only $146 ea.
The Bridgestones weren't at fault w/ the Explorers IMO. Ever see the Army training movie where they were tipping over the jeep on war tires (tall skinnies)? Same w/ the Ford.
Under-inflated and over-worked tires are an accident waiting to happen, which, of course, it did.
They shuda installed a 31x10.50 on the Explorer and saved lives.

I knew after I typed that that I should not have mentioned the Exploders... way too negative:blam:. Sorry.

Good recommendation HH, the Grabbers seem to be a good choice. But this would require that we... (erh, I) as Magnumphiles accept the idea that our Mags are "trucks", hence, my initial dilemma of finding a high performance summer tire for huge Hemi-powered "car". LOL

You are right, since the Grabbers fit perfectly and they have excellent reviews along with being the most reasonably priced (cheap compared to the alternatives actually) they are on my very very short list.

I also forgot about the General's ...they are a valid and worthwhile choice in our tire size ... I think there is also a Cooper NXT that has gotten good reviews for the 255-55-18 size but there were none available at any dealer when I bought my BFG KDW2.

The Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta SUV tire is a great daily driver ultra high performance summer tire that is an asymmetrical design. MANY SRT8 folks including myself are running them and love them. They are a great tire comparible almost to a tee with the INVO's. The only difference IMO are the looks and the fact that you can rotate the V's anyway you like....not so with the INVO's. The Vette and M3 guys are buying them as well and loving them.

Is any one running the Toyo S/T? I have had them for about 3 weeks and like them so far they look aggresive I know they are rated for SUV's but we do drive heavy cars. I have 295's on the rear and 255 on the front and love the looks get compliments all the time. I wanted the T1R but was not willing to go to a -27 inch rolling diameter, stock is 28 so I went up and my curent selection is about 29" dia think it looks better.
Excuse the typing i had a long day and the vodka tonics are working:wink:

The FINAL decision is in. The new tires are not what you expect.

First let me thank everyone for some great info because it forced me to go back and do more research, a whole lot more research.

I'll try to get some pictures in few days.

From Nitto's web site
"The InvoŽ is non-directional so that owners can rotate tires on staggered fitments. This freedom of rotation reduces abnormal wear for a smooth, quiet ride throughout the life of the tire."

Wish I knew about these when I bought tires...
