View Full Version : What is the difference between a Procharger and Vortech?

I'm still doing research into the different supercharges, as I haven't yet decided on what I want to do... plus I'm trying to save up :)

I have been looking at what I see as the two big players in the HEMI game, Procharger and Vortech. It looks, to me at least, like Vortech has the lead by a large margin, but I'm trying to figure out why?

It is the cost difference?

What exactly is the differences? I know they both run off of a belt, but one is a screw type and the other... what, like a turbo? What makes them different? Leaving the cost out of the pictures, will they provide esentially the same performance gains with the same boost?

I'm basically just trying to figure out the differences between the two types and figure out which would be best for me and my application (no drag, no race, just street and a daily driver-plus very few other mods like a CAI and possibly upgrading the exhaust before or after).

Thanks!

From my understanding, the performance numbers from both kits are comparable. The main differences I am aware of are that Procharger has a large front-mount air-to-air intercooler while Vortech has a smaller front-mount air-to-water intercooler connected to an air-to-water aftercooler on top of the engine, and Procharger (I think still) uses an auxillary or accessory fuel injector setup while Vortech uses full replacement injectors. The injector thing with Procharger... I don't get. I'm also not sure if the Procharger supercharger is internally lubricated. Vortech's is and it's nice.

Overall, the Vortech kit is simple. They include a tune that is basically designed for your mods, and though it isn't the most spectacular tune for performance, it is safe. I'd say Vortech has the lead because it just comes across as simpler to understand, install, and run. Though I know some people hate the look of the Vortech aftercooler... I like it, to each their own. Good luck. I love my Vortech.

Actually both units are centrifical (spelling it's 8 am and I just got to work) If you leave cost out of the picture the main Differences between a Pro-Charger and a Vortech for the last couple years was that Pro0Chargers had their own oil system so you didn't need to tap into your engine oil for lubrication. But now the V3 head unit on the Vortech is self contained as well so that difference is no longer a big deal. The other Major difference is the Intercooler/Aftercooler set-ups on them both. Pro-Charger uses a front mount Air to Air Intercooler which has it's stong points and it's weak points. Vortech uses a Liquid to Air system with a heat exchanger and coolant to keep the air at a steady temp. This lends to a more consistant cooling affect for daily driving. Each system has it's ups and downs for different people and I believe you would ba happy with either choice.

Pro-Charger kits now include Injectors and fuel system upgrades and A diablo tuner with a tune. Also the Pro-Chargers were the first self contained superchargers on the market.

Thanks for the added info John. I was hoping you'd chime in, since you have so much experience with both kits.

Centrifugal = Center Leaving (type of supercharger)

Centripetal = Center Falling, or moving towards the center

Yeah, I've had coffee.

I don't know too much about the procharger, but I have a Vortech and its a very well though out kit. The head unit is driven with a cog belt to eliminate any slipping at the head unit. It comes with 50# Mopar OEM injectors and a MSD boost-a-pump for fuel delivery. It puts out 6 psi and you lose less boost with the air to water cooler than with the air to air.
