View Full Version : Pedders Bump Steer Kit

I just had the Pedders Bump Steer Kit put in my car last night.

My oh my! I'm telling you, it is a very different car since last night. You wouldn't think that moving a steering rack up by 3mm would be that big of a difference, but it was.

There is a stretch of I5 going North, right after Tacoma Mall, and before the Tacoma Dome, (for those in WA who know this stretch) where it gets a bit twisty, with rough roads due to constant construction and busted up overlays of asphalt. I have ALWAYS had to be a two handed driver, (with a firm grip on the wheel) in this section, and honestly MANY places. I litterally drove through this section with an index finger and thumb (one hand) with light pressure, through this whole section. NO KIDDING. Anyone that has ever felt the need to grip the wheel hard in a corner with an LX needs this kit.

My only wish is that Pedders would make one with even more offset for cars lower than mine. Stock cars will benefit, but my car with SRT suspension has been changed for the better. I'd bet cars that are lower than mine (and there's MANY that are) would certainly benefit from this kit, but perhaps benefit MORE from a bushing that's even more offset.

Let me be real clear here, I changed NOTHING else other than adding the bump steer kit. This did result in a slight bit of TOE OUT, which would not help in a highway situation. (yet the car handled better than before)

The steering wheel was also just a hair off - it was turned to the right just a bit. I corrected that easy enough by bringing the drivers side wheel in just a bit at the tie rod. It was about 3/32 overall at the locking nut. I originally put it in about 5/32, but after a drive I decided I didn't like the feel, and the wheel was off the opposite direction. So I settled on 3/32. Those concerned will want to have an alignment done, but for toe, I'd prefer to just go by feel. Toe doesn't change camber, but camber changes toe - so it's easy to do the toe.

GET ONE.

EDIT: I've now had a few more days to drive the car over the normal commute areas. There are a few areas that I drive that have always bugged me. There's one in particular that is an on ramp to a freeway. It is a semi tight turn to the right, and right of the crest of a hill is an expansion joint. Every day I hit that thing. The car always lurches to and fro when hitting that section, very unsetling. Now, when I hit it, it's just smooth, and the car tracks straight. No exageration here, just drives the way it should. Very happy with this kit.

Chris,

Glad to see your getting your great car even further dialed in.

I didn't see a real good picture of your tires and wheels until this get together this weekend. That setup is really looking fantastic on you car, truely one of a kind.

Pedders is by far the best MOD I have done. Simply just a new car. The bump-steer bushing kit makes a drastic difference to our vehicles and is the cheapest and one of the best improvements Pedders offers....

agreed, they are a huge improvement, espescially on a lowered car.

Moving it more than 3mm would not really improve anything, the travel has been checked through out the range the wheel moves.

There are also limitations to the OE mount. There is very little room, the rack mount ID, is a limiting factor. That said, if you love your EP2113 Bumpsteer Correction Bushes, you'll love them even more with our DAMPERS at the Damper Days Prices.

Some cars you can drive with one hand at the 12 oclock position - I never could with this car - just too scary. Now, I actually can. 9 and 3 is still the best, but if I wanted to be Joe Cool, I can do the 12.

I'm slowly trying to get used to not having to grip the wheel as hard as I have for so long.

I have the bumpsteer kit as well as the coils-n-shocks and I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Totally changed the overall 'feel' of the car and the steering is now what it should have been from the factory.

I don't think I got as many of the cool 'bushes' as the picture shows, but I'm totally happy with the package.

Just wait until you replace some of your bushings, and shocks, you'll be shocked all over again! (a little pun there, lol)

You'll probably get a better response telling how to put it in, and maybe pictures, but here's the short answer...

It raises up your steering rack so there isn't an angle between the tie rods and the rack. So there is much less toe change when the coil springs compress.

1. Remove the two rack nuts and bolts
2. Press out the OE rubber bushes with a bush press and rattle gun
3. Insert the new urethane bushes into the rack mount holes
4. Clock them so the eccentric hole is in the 6 o'clock position
5. Remove the ferrule
6. Lube the coarse / textured bush ID with the provided Pedders lube
7. do NOT lube the exterior of the bush or the rack orifice
8. Insert the ferrules
9. Wipe off an excess lube displaced when inserting the ferules
10 Bolt up the rack using a couple of drops of LocTite RED. They are hard mounts so make them tight.
11. Have the car aligned to correct the toe
12. Drive and get a very large SEG

How it works -- that is Pedders mojo you just installed. LOL It works by better aligning the rack / tie rods to the knuckle.

Step 13. Excercise your rights. Order Pedders Dampers!!!

One EP2113 package contains the bits required for the steering rack on the RWD LX. One EP2113AWD does the same for the AWD LX, but costs about $40.00 more.

The short version of the instructions would read:

1. Unbolt the rack
2. Replace the OE black bushes with Pedders RED bushes and lube
3. Clock the eccentric ferules to 6:00
4. Bolt the rack back in position

If you are unsure on how to install the bit, take your car to a Pedders Dealer or a reputable shop. Have the Tech that is going to do the work call the Pedders Dealer you purchased the bits from. The Dealer will answer any questions they have.

Why not install it? It takes less than 30 minutes on a lift and makes a world of difference.
