so everyone knows my stand on performance mods and MPG..
add mods, lose MPG really simple to me..
bought the car stock, with MDS and stock exhaust and airbox..
18 - 20 mpg on average...
added CAI lost about 3 -4 mpg
added catback lost another 2 -3 mpg
added StupidChips tuner tried various combinations usually resulted in MPG loss..
at this point I have been pretty steady with 12- 14 mpg..
my EVIC avg has not moved from 12.9 for 3 months..
added diablo turned off MDS, no change..
12.9 on EVIC, reality is 13.5 on average....
last friday I loaded Diablo revision v9r4..
used the EXACT same settings I had with v8r20...
filled the gas tank about a hour after adding the update, didn't drive anywhere but to the gas station after adding the update, then went home...
today I noticed that my "trip A" ODO was at 240 miles.. which normally means time to fill up (i reset Trip A at every fill) only I am at 1/2 a tank, not the normal 1/8th left and low fuel light coming on..
hmmm..
checked the EVIC Avg MPG, for the heck of it..
it's at 16.6 mpg.
the EVIC has not moved in 3 months.. I watch it reguarly as I have a gas budget of $240 per month..
if I exceed $240 I'm walking (or getting a ride from Rain.. lol)
hmmm sumptin changed in v9r4..........
guess I might need to eat my words just a little.. :panic:

dude. I don't know what you're doing, but with all the mods on my car, I haven't lost any MPG. In fact, it's almost like she gained! If I drive with cruise control on she'll average 23-25 mpg/hwy. So if youre getting only 16, there maybe something more wrong with your car than mods.

I drive 5.5 miles to work all street no highway..
I haven't been on a highway in 6 months.. except for a quick 30 mile run to a Meet and Greet

I personally have never seen over 16 mpg, so I doubt its anything wrong with the cars.

Well then you're talking city MPG which at 16 is just about right.

I dunno Marc... I just finished a 1500mile trip with Bean... that 392 stroker averaged 23mpg across the entire trip (actual, not EVIC). I could work highway numbers up as high as 26 if I really babied it.
So as far as my experience goes, modding hasn't hurt MPG, but rather helped it.

And, I bet you're always the first car to the next red light! I've noticed a minor improvement with the Diablo. I don't pay a lot of attention to it though, except on long trips (and as a possible indication that somethings not right... if it ever gets way out of wack).

try resetting the MPG calculator after each fill up. thats what i did with my FX-35.. for some reason, if i never reset it, i would get 16mpg.. after resetting it after each fill up, id get around 21-22mpg.. stupid computers in these cars these days are screwing everything up
on a side note...i dont get why you have a $240 gas budget per month.. u spend a helluva lot more on car mods
i spend about $200 a month on gas myself.. i drive between 300-400 miles a week.. unless i stay in irvine on the weekends

This again? My experience has been the same as Marc's. Each mod took away 2 mpg. I've been getting 12 mpg on my rush hour stop-and-go commute. I loaded the latest crom last week as well, so it will be interesting to see if I get a big improvement in mileage as well. (I do not have EVIC and have not been paying attention to how this tank is doing, so I don't have any gut feeling about it.)

One thing I've noticed on the gas mileage figure shown on the EVIC is that it's 'real time' for like 30-45-60 seconds and then goes into what I call 'averaging' mode and doesn't update real quick at all. If I reset it every minute or two I get a better feel for what's going on.
And 'reset all' resets both trip odometers as well as the mpg display.. found that one the other day..
It will be interesting to see what a cam does for mileage - last two tanks of local only 2-lane use were 19.1 and 21.2.
Your mileage will vary..

For me, my mileage is directly proportional to the weight of my right foot. More mods :modding: tends to increase that weight somehow... Can't explain that one. :racing:
I don't have a highly modded car, but if I keep my foot out of it, the mileage does increase.
My wife stated one time, "You know, if you don't take off so fast you'd get better gas mileage." My reply was, "I didn't buy this car to save on gas!"
If others have similar experience with the 9r04, I'll have to try that one.

you think I spend a lot on mods..
think again, almost all of my mods are done with bartering or trading. whether it be for electrical work or stereo installs or computer repairs, etc.. I barter for everything..
I have spent $1200 on your SRT wheels and $700 on my suede interior, and $250 on the halos since December..
that's all. that's about $550 a month for 4 months, and that is my Mod budget until July.. $2000 every 6 months.. PERIOD. whether is be for the car or the motorcycle, modding is a hobby for me to a certain extent some of it recently was business, trades in exchange for sponsorship from a few vendors for SF, and some other side work.
my new head unit was a trade in part.....
powdercoating the SRT wheels was a trade
interior painting and headlight painting and halo install was a trade
several of the other items have been "sponsored", "gifted" or out right given to me because I helped someone with something in the past..
I don't ever ask for anything in return for the help I give, you of all people should know that.. but I also know that when someone offers me something in trade and I refuse 9 out of 10 times it is an insult to that person so I accept the trade, and if I don't need/want the item I trade to for one I do, I have never sold anything given to me by an LX or VTX fourm member..
as for the star scan, that was purchased with the money I allocated for my headers and high flow cats, which again where given to me by a member here in trade for work on his car, which I still haven't finished which is why the headers are not on my car yet, not fair for me to use his stuff until our deal is complete..
as for my $240 a month gas budget, it's simple EVERYTHING in my life is on a budget, so my dollar goes as far as it can.. this way Emma never goes without something her 3 year old heart desires.. and I am never broke.
And, I bet you're always the first car to the next red light! I've noticed a minor improvement with the Diablo. I don't pay a lot of attention to it though, except on long trips (and as a possible indication that somethings not right... if it ever gets way out of wack).
nope, I drive like an old man unless I'm around a bunch of fellow LX'rs... then I gotta keep up right?

:thumbs_u:I respect all that you do for us, Marc, and like you, I am on a budget of some sorts for each normal expense that I have. It is just not to the capacity of yours yet, as I dont quite have a full blown family yet. Two or three years more.
On a side note, the Diablo really is beneficial. When I am gentle on the throttle and on level ground, I can pull 28-30 mpg easy at 70 mpg with cruise control on. Its great.:thumbs_u:

hmm forgot that u barter/trade most of your stuff.. i should know, uve told me all the stories lol
but at any rate... do try resetting the evic.. and let me know if it works or not.. cuz it DID indeed work for me.. when i didnt reset it, the dashboard mpg and the real mpg sucked.. when i did reset it, all went well
time to swap the camry hybrid engine from Rain's car into yours finally... maybe, at least i think maybe, i can win in a race with u :)

the EVIC computer is worthless. I calculate my MPG manually.. that was my point.. normally at 240 miles on the ODO it's time for a fill..
I'm at 295 right now and the low fuel light hasn't come on yet, but it will on the way home tonight.
as for you winning against the Camry.. I doubt it.. 240 hp and 337 ftlbs of torque (remember the electric motor carries the torque all the way across the powerband) curb weight of 3600 pounds and a 0 -60 time of 6.1 sec..
compared to the 2.7L 300: with 190 hp and 4600 pounds and 0-60 time of like 11 seconds..
not thinking the 2.7L is gonna beat the Hybrid..
but you might beat me if I'm on my bike (the peddle kind) :Na_Na_Na_Na:

i was saying put the hybrid engine into your 300.. engine swap. then if we race, ill kick ur arse
btw, doesnt the 300 weigh 4200 lbs, not 4600?
my 3000gt was 4200+/- lbs.. 222hp (non-turbo) to the front wheels.. that thing fleeeeeewwwww

even with the Hybrid motor in my 300 I'll still beat you..... that Hybrid motor ain't no joke son..
I can take stock mustang v6 models easy and I give the v8's a run for their money in the Camry..
remember, that electric motor is ALL torque, from 0 to 5800 RPM, 100% torque across the powerband, when you go WOT you get the electric AND gas working together for 337 ft-lbs of torque.. and that is right about the same amount of torque that the 5.7L V8 puts out in stock form.
and remember Horsepower means nothing on the launch, it's all torque.. Hp power is a high RPM rating, Torque is a low RPM rating.. torque is for acceleration and when that torque is applied at 100% all the way across the powerband you get kick ass acceleration.
also remember, what most people don't know or understand about the Hybrid Technology, the "electric motor" is not a separate motor per-say, it is the transmission, and in the case of the Camry the electric transmission is only 2 speeds, first gear (so to speak) at WOT takes the car to 90mph.....
so the hybrid car keeps accelerating and gaining RPM while the gas car has to shift, drop rpm, raise rpm, shift, drop rpm, raise rpm and so on...
and 4600 is about right with a tank of gas and my fat a$$ in the car..

yeah Red, but you where on the highway... mine are all city miles..
filled the tank yesterday and I averaged 15.9 for this tank (EVIC shows 16.6)
which is a vast improvement over the past year of 12 - 13 average.

dont mean to go off topic.. but since you said torque is everything,, i have a question
the rx8 i had was 6sp.. had 238hp @ 8500rpm, 159 lb ft torque @ 5500rpm
the automatic version has 197hp @ 7200rpm, 164 lb ft torque @ 5000rpm
all else equal (weight of car, etc).. why is the spd faster??
JetBlack300c
04-09-2008, 05:13 PM
cause the RX8 is a Wankel Rotory with NO bottom end without a turbo..
and the 5sp is lighter cause there is no torque converter, and as I said torque is a low speed rating..
when you say faster are you meaning top end? cause once you hit high rpm that is where horse power rating takes over, and the 5sp has more power because it doesn't lose the power at the torque converter like the auto does..
