Suggestions for posting photos here.

I have a couple suggestions for posting photos here (and they're suggestions, not rules):

1) Lenses and Shutters was originally conceived of as a place for your artistic LX photography - not necessarily pictures of new mods. Those probably belong in Misc LX Mods (http://www.lxforums.com/board/forumdisplay.php?f=63), or whichever specific forum. It'll go the way it goes, and it is what we make it, but the idea was to have a place set apart from the rest for the "glamour shots".

2) Photo width: Please limit the width to something reasonable (1024 or 1120 pixels MAX?) 800 pixels wide is a good default for most photos. Anything larger than that won't fit on most screens, and you can't see the whole image without scrolling or resizing it. That's a PITA for the viewer, and it keeps them from seeing what you're showing.

3) Make threads: It's better to have smaller threads with fewer pics each, than larger ones with too many. I know this is contrary to my usual preference (one thread per topic), but with photos, it's really easy to get obese. The Spring Fest Photo Thread is a perfect example - when someone posts one new photo, the viewer has to reload all 200 photos on that page just to see it...

4) PLEASE don't quote someone's photos in your reply to them (unless you're commenting on a photo in particular). Just edit them out before you hit reply.

5) Tell Junior to shut up and post pictures.

I wonder if it might be worth having an admin move some of the better existing threads here. That might be more trouble than it's worth, but it would be cool to have those threads here, now that "here" is available.

max size on photobucket on regular account is 1024x768.

I take my pics at or near max size that my Panasonic Lumix will do, just to have the resolution to tinker with them, and they end up at like 2560x1920 or some outrageous size.

I agree with Junior though, making a 'standard' of 1024x768 or 800x600 would be good.

I'm not sure what the Default is, but I know you can pick from some presets - there's one that's for 15" screen IIRC, that's 800x600. It'll resize it to that if you tell it to. I'm not sure if you can do that globally to a whole set of pics - I'll look into that. I always resize mine locally (on my PC) before I upload them. I have a small program that makes it easy to resize a batch - so I resize them as I copy them to my Photobucket upload folder.

For the record, the size of your photos has always been fine.

On a sidenote: I've been thinking for a while that someone needs to do a good write-up on how to use Photobucket, because the question gets asked so often - How do I post pictures? Maybe I'll sit my arse down and do that.

Yeah, that's true - I was just thinking that when you have a bunch of photos globbed onto each other, it makes it slower to load (like the Spring Fest photo thread - someone adds one photo, and the viewer has to refresh 200 photos just to see the new one), and it's harder to find the particular photo(s) you're looking for, if you go back later.

It's called VuePrint - it's been around largely unchanged since Windows 95. It's the fastest way to open a photo for viewing. It has some basic editing tools, but mostly it's a simple viewer with tiny overhead. Double click on any image file to open it, and then hit the spacebar to advance through the folder, one photo at a time. Z to resize, V to save, and it's as simple as that. You can also crop, etc. My camera puts its photos into a folder with dates as subfolders, then I resize the ones I want to upload, and save them in a "Photobucket Uploads" folder on my desktop. Once they're uploaded, I empty that folder.

It's shareware, IIRC, but I have a serial number. I'll check to see what version I use and if it's still available for download, [-]and if so, I'll risk certain jailtime to give you the SerNo. [/-]

You can also use Adobe Bridge to export and upload via FTP. I guess the size I have been using (1120x747, 500kb) is just a tad big for your average Joe, but I figured most people have a 17" monitor (in which case they can you images I post of their cars as wallpapers).

Speaking of jail time [-]bit torrent[/-] is your best friend. :)

I'd love to get to know that package better - I was keeping up with the Adobe podcasts when Lightroom was first released, but I've never sat down and used it...

Actually, yours are just right (on my monitor anyway - I'm a 21" at 1152x864) - yours go side-to-side almost perfectly on my setup.

OK, the powers that be have given me some moderator tools. There's only so much I can do, but I can resize pics if necessary - and I only will if they're huge.

All I have is simple Janitor-type stuff, and on this subforum only. Sticky/Unsticky, etc. I can edit posts, but I won't without PM'ing you first, and then only to resize huge pics.

MS paint does a pretty good job at resizing..i use it all the time because it opens tons quicker than photoshop

What are the odds of having a "non-LX" sub-forum created. There seems to be many people on this forum who are into photography of more than just their cars and they like to show those pics off, yet there really is no other place for them except the gas tank...
