View Full Version : The Skinny on Upcoming Forum Upgrades

Well, we all know things have been slowing down. Its inevitable with the growth this place has experienced.

We're doing something about it. DMag, Magnumclub and I have been planning an upgrade path and testing the upgrade procedure actively for at least the last week. Among other things, we are quadrupling the number of servers that run things, and this is going to make an *enormous* difference in how this place runs.

But as we draw closer to the actual move, we are starting to work with prepping live data for the migration. Today we all got bit by that with a pair of outages that lasted for about 1/2 hour total between the two, earlier today.

My bad. Sorry about that. I was copying all of Butweet's posts and the server plain just crashed under the load.

There will be future outages, but with any luck they will all be planned. I can foresee a need for at least two and possibly three more as we prepare to and then finally migrate the LXForums database to its new home.

Stay tuned. I promise it will be worth the wait.

HERE'S THE LATEST
At 8:00 pm US Eastern time on Feb 20 we will be upgrading our database server. This is the heart and soul of LXForums, so its no small task. We have literally tens of millions of records to move safely fom Point A to Point B, and there's only one way to do that: carefully. We'll be back up and running asap.

Good job guys planning this before we get so bogged down from the growth here.

May I ask what DB backend the site uses? Just curious. I was no aware you run it across multiple servers. Figured we were on one big one with multiprocessors and a ton of memory.

OK, so I'm ready to pitch in a few more bucks to keep this place alive. How do I upgrade from Site Supporter 1 to Site Supporter 2 (or can I)????? I've seen the question asked previously, but haven't found an answer by searching.

Just curious if you all are doing this on your own or using a paid host ? There many of us LX forum members who do this computer mumbo jumbo kind of suff for a living. If there ever was a need.

Using a paid host. Unmanaged dedicated.

The current server provider is actually quite good in pricing, uptime and configuration. Not so great on service but we have volunteer/slave labor to help take care of that.

Someone asked about the db back end. Generally I don't like to discuss any aspect of back ends for security reasons (i.e. paranoia) but its easy to find out that the underlying software that runs this place is built for mySQL.

We're waiting on servers to become available. Setting us back a day or so I think.

My thought too.

Not to be cheap, but can we pay the difference and upgrade to level2, and lose the level1 banner? Its what could have happened at the beginning had we chosen level 2.

As I understand it you go one or the other, or both. Its not any philosophical thing... its just thats the way the software is set up. We just recently discovered that if you go to L1 after already being L2 your privileges go down to L1. So you don't want to do that.

Yes, I believe that is possible. Pay the difference and be upgraded - BUT you should PM for example DMAG to do it - he can manually upgrade you once you've submitted the difference in cost between the two levels.
